just returned the Bose & XM4 and decided to keep the XM5s due to better ANC for flights (vs Bose) and comfort vs XM4 (didn't fit my head shape well). and Sony's are louder to "block out" even more noise. this is coming from a Bose product lover.

With Bose rumored to be bringing out a new headphone, I took another listen to this review. I own both the 700 and XM5 and agree with everything you had to say. Two great headphones. I hope Bose can bring up their voice volume for calls, and won’t someone add water resistance to their high end headphones. After all, we walk around and travel with them. By the way, you are the very best at these kinds of comparisons.

I just came from the Bose 700 to XM5 and I am absolutely unimpressed even with all the modifications. XM5 has immaculate call quality, everything else is subpar. NC is so minute. I haaaaateeee how cheap they feel, I can’t get over it. The headband slips off my head constantly, and the speech function gets annoying. You can’t yawn, hum or sing along before music abruptly pauses for 15-20 seconds before resuming. The function comes handy sometimes, but not always. I miss my 700s but was looking for an update. I’ll keep looking, but won’t be keeping these mx5s :(.

Thank you for focusing on the things that really matter. I have NC 700s, and have the same complain as you, the clamping pressure is too high (even after stretching it overnight multiple times), but until now, I felt the call(microphone) quality in a noisy environment was unsurpassed on the NC 700, looks like Sony finally did something about their microphone arrays. I will order these in the near future and test them on calls on the road against the NC 700s. All of the Sony XM headsets have been more comfortable than the NC 700, unfortunately for me, call quality was the most important feature but looks like I may get a break here. I think it’s hilarious how others do reviews of these headsets and leave the microphone part completely out of the review. Thanks again 👍

Additional question: On a side note, in the mean time, I could try very quickly one XM5 yesterday (i could not at all test in depth). While i was extremely pleased with call quality, I was very-very-very disappointed by the ANC. It worked brilliantly on a steady state, but seems to re-initialize when a sudden movement of my head or a sudden sound change happened. It looks like the "auto ANC/ ANC optimizer" is simply not able to cope with sudden changes, and one cannot disable it (in other words, the headphone chooses the ANC level without asking me, while I would like to have it at its max setting all the time). Have you had such a behaviour, or was it only the pair tested? If confirmed, that's -unfortunately- an absolute deal breaker.

Best review on this subject - by some margin. Thank you! An question I have is whether there is a lag when using the cable? As a fellow video content creator, I like to use the headphones for editing. Then even 155 ms bluetooth latency makes that almost impossible. A great thing with these is that it has the 2.5mm jack. I had a NC headphone in the past which had a lag even when using the cable, I suppose because it buffers up some sound and environment noise, to then apply the noise cancellation algorithm with more precision. Do these headphones have a lag with NC on, using the cable? Thanks man for great content. New subscriber.

The Bose has better ANC and call quality hands down - I disagree with your conclusion. I have used the Bose 700s in an very noisy open office and its call quality is unparalleled. I doubt seriously that the Sonys will have better call quality in a real-world office environment. The Sonys had more low-level noise than the Bose. I own the Bose 700s and they have a wider sound stage and have superior audio quality. The bass on the 700s have a more clear and distinct bass response. Both headphones are close to each other, but the Bose are much more detailed. The Sonys are typically louder. The Sonys sound muddy, and unclear. With the Bose, all of the instruments are distinct and clear and you can hear each instrument clearly. Really, there is no comparison, the Bose have superior audio quality. Though I disagree with some of your conclusions, you have done an excellent review. Much of what we consider "good" is subjective. One final note, this design by Sony is a blatant copy of the Bose 700 design - even the audio response of the Bose 700s has been copied.

Sitting in the same room as someone else on a call the Bose was much better. Audio quality I rate the Sonys out of the box but once you tweak the EQ the Bose has the win. I find the Bose significantly more comfortable also. Ended up returning the XM5’s! Not enough in it to make me upgrade.

I own the Sony XM4 & Bose NC700 & find i tend to prefer the soundstage of the Bose cans, they would better if they didn't have sliders though as you never get a totally comfortable fit. If they changed the mechanism to be more in line with the XM4 they would have a far better fit. Shame to see Sony went with the slider type for the XM5, that has put me off. Appreciate the info provided in your videos, most helpful.

Please like this so people can see... I have XM5 the Japanese version ( made in and for japan and with Japanese letters written all over it ) i was surprised to see people say xm5 is kinda bad at ANC! then one day i saw someone had the same model but the Malaysia version ( which is the version everyone has outside of japan ) i asked them to test theirs... U cant believe! its like 2 different headphones!!! if the regular version is 1 out of 10, the Made in Japan one is 10 out of 10!! i was shocked. After that im only looking for things made in and for japan only. Its not fair that they let other countries assemble Sony's products and make it low quality! I wonder how does Sony let this happen? Why do people outside of Japan get lower quality of the same brand, same model. same everything! i think it also applies to all other japanese brands, Like panasonic, Denon, Yamaha. and so on...

@@chrischoy9 it was an issue with the right ear cup, but it was like a high-pitched noise that was so ear piercingly loud that they became unusable. I'm going to bring them to Best Buy to have them repair them at some point. That issue seems to coincide with a structural issue because pieces of the ear cup joint literally just fell off. I have multiple small pieces of plastic sitting with them right now. I decided that while I'm waiting for those to be fixed, I need some sort of noise canceling headphones, so I went with the soundcore space Q45 and I must say they're fantastic. The noise canceling is 80% of what the sonys are, and the sound isn't perfect but it's more than good enough. I love the sound core app too, it's way better than Sony's in my opinion. I got them on sale for 99 bucks but at the full price of 150 I would still get them. If you're looking for some decent ones and you don't want to spend another 400 bucks, think about those 👍

I could never get the XM5 to pair with Amazon Echo, even after hours on the phone with tech support, it just never "found" them. They said they'd have to escalate to engineering but only if I called Amazon and tried to get them to resolve the problem first, which they could not either. When Sony said I'd have to send them in for warranty repair, I gave up and returned them for a refund. For $400 they should pair with anything. Disappointing because I liked them otherwise.
