Correction: The WH1000XM5 uses a 30mm driver compared to the 40mm driver on the WH1000XM4. Thanks to Joey B for picking that up. Also, we will be getting the higher end counterpart to the PX7 S2, the PX8 soon. Keep an eye out in case we compare some of the new ultra premium $1000+ bluetooth sets!

The XM5 needs good eq'ing. The stock sound is way too closed in and kinda muffled, but once you dial them in they open up nicely and have an excellent sound. I've spent some time comparing them eq to eq to the B&O HX, B&W PX7 S2, and Sennheiser M4, and while I like all of them the XM5 have been my favorite. They just have really good clarity and separation and stay balanced regardless of the type of music I listen to. I enjoyed the M4 but I felt they only really shined when listening to hard hitting music with heavy bass. They sound really good overall but Jazz, blues, and classical types didn't come out as well as they do with the Sony. The HX have an overall really nice sound but never sounded great to me. The PX7 S2 were the only one's that had a slightly better overall sound to me than the XM5 but with some of Sony's other features they became my favorite overall. The only ones I've tested that sound better than the XM5 are the Focal Bathys and B&O H95 but at $800 and $900 respectively I would expect that. I'm not a diehard Sony fan and really wanted to like the Sennheiser more (if for no other reason just cause I love Sennheiser) but the Sony's just wound up impressing me the most

@@MrJ.31 not true.. you can't get XM5 any better for sound separation and clarity even via EQ when comparing to Apple Max, or B&W.. people should know.. the western 'world' operates by who paid who for 'add'.. that's all.

Had the momentum 4s for a month. The sound is incredible. Just as he described. Clear. And rich highs noticeable mids and lows that are present but do not muddy the mix. My issue was that they hurt the top of my head after an hour or more of listening or playing video games. They also had connection issues switching between devices and auto connecting to some. I now own the px7 s2. They are a bit more comfortable and sleeker. The sound is excellent but I miss the lows of the momentum 4. I wish the momentum 4 put a bit more premium parts on and saved weight by dropping to 30-40hr battery.

I recently purchased the WH10000XM4 and was shocked at how muffled the high end was. When I compare headphones I only use a bluetooth transmitter. That eliminates any EQ factors. I have a current JBL Armour that sounds great, but is like a vice on my head. It has both excellent bass and an wide open top end. The Sony seemed like it had a filter on the top end. I even paired it with my phone to see if the EQ would help but did nothing but increase the 4k range. Very disappointing to the point where I didn't want to even try the newer M5 where I saw similar complaints about the top end. The Sennheiser will be my next choice. This was a good review.

As for me, folding ability is a big disadvantage of Sonys 1000xm series. After some time folding headphones start to make an awful squeaking sound. Hope, it will not be a case with latest. I have Bowers Wilkins px7 first edition and for some time Sennheiser m4- they both are great. Folding ability without squeaking is great in Momentum 3, but they are heavier and their case is not sturdy enough for protection

I find that each of these models lack in some way where it's really difficult to declare a winner. When I bought the XM3 that I am seeking to replace, they were the obvious choice for noise-cancelling headphones. I'm really perplexed that Sony have made the XM5's even larger at the smallest setting. They slide off of one's head too easily, which is absolutely horrible given how fragile they are (internal components). Give me an AirPods Max 2 with a proper case and USB-C charging, and I'd happily pay the premium over these alternatives that suffer from awkward design choices or lackluster noise-cancelling, or disappointing sound quality or a lack of comfort. Those Momentum 4s almost get it right, but the pods look cheap, the NC is meh, and the comfort is a bit so-so. Perhaps they will perfect the product line with the 5th iteration.

But when you buy new ones, you at least want your new ones to be at least as good as your current ones in every aspect. But every new model seems to have at least something that my XM2s did better. The Airpods Max have top notch ANC (Probably 2nd only to the Sony), best hear-through mode feature (most natural sounding) but have no high res codecs (Apple tings). They sound decent all things considered, but general consensus is that they tend to lose to all of these offerings in the sound quality department. They're also pricier and lack accessories + a proper case for this price point. If you want wired listening you need an adaptor, which is purchased separately.
