Thanks for the kind words! It’s SUCH a tough call between those two! You’re asking me to compare two of my favorite headphones! Knowing what I know now, and if I had to pick one, it would probably be the XM5 for two reasons: (1) I travel a lot for work, and I have issues wearing the APMs on planes. (The pressure really bothers my sinuses for some reason.) (2) It gets cold where I live, and I’m not a fan of touching that metal when it’s cold. Those aside… it’s a coin flip, honestly. I generally prefer the sound of the APMs, but the Sony gives you better tools to make the sound what you want. Sony has better battery life and ANC. APMs have better usability and the transparency is magic. Both have their highlights and issues with comfort. I WILL say that, if you watch the “Real people review” series I did, the APMs did EXTREMELY well with the people I interviewed, and they weren’t as impressed with the XM5. But they only used them for a few minutes. You know, I’m writing a review now comparing the M4 vs the APMs. I think the next one will be the XM5 vs the APMs because that’s a question that I keep getting. And it’s NOT an easy one to answer. (Unless you consider value for the dollar, then I’d argue that maybe the XM5. Maybe.) Sorry for being about as clear as mud, but that’s a tough question!

Wonderfully detailed review 👍 Thank you 🙂 Two questions: 1. Could you link some valuable guides\info about how to set the XM5s to properly use Dolby Atmos both with a PC and with an Android phone, please? 2. How are you finding the staining issue on the Black color of the XM5s, after having used them for a few months now? I realize you clean them with those small and very useful alcohol pads (btw manual warns against using alcohol), but you must have seen how it takes on finger-oils and such. Do you find that it ever stains them permanently in some areas? I like the black color, but have seen a ton of recommendations online to get the "Silver" ones instead as they supposedly don't get these finger-oil stains (and apart from hair-dyes that can rub off on them and I don't use, personally, people seem to claim the "silver" ones don't get dirty).

Hi VanCamelCat, 1. I haven't really looked into these, so my apologies. (I'm largely a Mac/iPhone user myself, so my testing with PC/Android is somewhat limited.) 2. I haven't had an issue with staining, although I have seen some people have the issue. Never on the outside, though, always on the ear pads. The most I've personally had is issues with fingerprints, but those are easy to wipe off. Nothing has been permanent, but then I also tend not to touch things that discolor my fingertips, like certain foods. (And I also have dry skin and live in a dry climate.) Regarding alcohol, thanks for the heads up. Actually I'd missed that point. I tend to like to use alcohol because I want to prevent bacterial overgrowth, and some of the other headphones I own actually recommend alcohol. I should have paid closer attention. I've had the silver ones before, and honestly, I'd be more scared of staining those than the black ones, at least the ears and headband. My apologies for not being more helpful.

As an iPhone user do you prefer the AirPods Max or the XM5? I am a little bit undecided between both. I just came back to Apple, and I will be using them mostly for listening to music, and for Webex/Zoom conferences for work (I have online meetings at least 6-8 hours a day). I have been trying to get an educated opinion on this, not many people actually gets into it. And, by the way. Great vid. Really liked the categories you are reviewing and your grade system. • @NorbReviews

Hi, Rubén, and thanks for the kind words. I’m actually working on that comparison right now, so I don’t have a definitive answer for you. If anything, for Apple users, right now, I’d give the edge to the AirPods Max because of how well they integrate and their connectivity, but wearing them for that long, the weight might start to become an issue, and there I give the advantage to the XM5. The frequency response on each is VERY different, but while the APMs have really great sound, the XM5 have more flexibility with the sound signature because of the EQ. In the Apple ecosystem, the APMs have all the cool features-spatial audio being the big one, but also some extra features-that Apple offers. In the end, I don’t think you can go wrong with either, but I give the slight edge to the AirPods Max (without taking cost into consideration). NOTE: I may change my mind by the time my video on this comes out, and as I discover things, but this is based on my current experience as an Apple user myself. Best of luck!

I saw how you said the fast charging is about the same but I disagree. The fast charge on the xm5 is 2x as fast as the xm4. For every 1 minute of the first 3 minutes of charging you get 1 hour of playback time, vs for every 1 minute of the first 10 minutes you get half an hour of playback time. Its not a crazy improvement, but in my opinion the xm5 have a considerably faster quick charge option.

I have big ears, too, so I feel where you’re coming from. The cup size is I think technically the same, but because the XM5 are more firm, they feel more roomy. I find them more comfortable because they build up less ear heat for me than the XM5. If you want room for ears, the QuietComfort 45, SoundCore Space Q45, and Sennheiser Momentum 3 all have more room, but the XM5 is very close, and packs more features than these three.

When you say AirPods, do you mean the earbuds? Or AirPods Max? If you like Apple AirPods Max may be worth trying out. That said, I’d immediately recommend the XM5, if you’re not interested in the APMs. Mind you, comfort is definitely a personal preference, but it’s ones I’ve liked a lot. Both the XM4 and XM5 are good, though. Another option I’ve been happy with, mostly, is the Bose QC45, but their features are limited, and I’m not in love with their ANC implementation. Finally, if you want something that gives you absolutely clear, fantastic sound (at the expense of fewer features), the Master & Dynamic MW65 may be a consideration. You should be able to find them now for about half the price they sold before, new. (New $600, now $300 or so). Hopefully you’ll find something you really like. Best of luck!

The xm4 case is so badly designed. Imagine you are going on a journey and want to charge them in a backpack. 1 - Try to charge them in their case with a power bank slotted in the netted pouch using the supplied usbc lead - you can't. 2 - The netted pouch should be on the top of the case not the bottom - open it on you're journey with netting on top and everything falls out into the lid n u gotta slot everything back in place lol. 3 - The zip only allows 20% closure when charging ,(with a longer lead) if it was the other way round it would give 60% closure and less risk of contents or headphones possibly falling out. Petty complaints? yes, but a bit of thought would have made this case practical, and no one ever comments or made a video on how little thought went into this case design. Still the best headphones I have ever had.

My glasses these days are pretty flat and close to my head, so both felt the same for me. I’ve used the XM4 with wider glasses (legs that bow out a bit)c and they were absolutely fine. The clamping force on each is relatively low, so I don’t imagine either being an issue. Bass might be more impacted in the XM5, but I doubt ANC would be because of the build materials. The Adaptive ANC *might* need to readjust more often-which is annoying-but I haven’t experienced a difference here, whether I’m wearing glasses or not.

Sony XM5. If you really want to block sound, also wear a pair of ear plugs. NOTHING will get through. And if you want just insane sound PLUS more noise canceling, get a pair of earphones (wired) and a headphone output splitter. Turn on the headphones and plug both in, then wear both. You’ll get this really cool effect where you can basically fake better instrument separation and greater soundstage. Plus you also get the noise canceling benefits of the XM5 PLUS the natural noise canceling of earphones. Sorry about your issues with planes. I was like that for a LONG time, myself, dealing with anxieties like that. I don’t know what changed, but eventually they went away. What helped me deal with them was listening to music or books, breathing deeply, and always thinking, “so long as I can hear this, I’m OK.” (That was hard during one very bumpy flight where even the stewardesses had a hard time walking. This might be a difference maker. 2 general thoughts: First, the weird thing about the XM4 vs XM5 is that people tend to love one and dislike the other. They’re that different. I prefer the XM5, but I also didn’t really like the XM4. Clearly, there are many who disagree with me. Second, they’re both great for what they do, and I don’t think you can go wrong with either, if you like their sound and what features they offer.

Hey Fazil, thanks for the question. 1. I know you mentioned the EQ settings, but I put out a vide on this where it doesn’t just go into what settings you can have (there are 2, plus another in the comments), but also it covers exactly what each register does. You can see it here: Sony WH-1000XM5: Best Equalizer Settings for YOU + Fine Tuning the EQ (Tutorial) kzread.info/dash/bejne/fKWE0MGMYNGwZNY.html Remember: the settings I suggest in the video are a starting point. Once you understand what each register does, you can fine tune it further to make it sound like YOU want it to sound. 2. My first question is, what are you looking for as far as sound goes? Are you looking for an open sound or an intimate sound? Lots of clarity? Lots of bass? A warm sound? An exciting sound? And what kind of music are you listening to? At what volumes? All of these are important. There are some things the XM5 does well (bass and warmth) and others that it doesn’t (fine detail, natural timbre, spaciousness). If after trying the settings above you’re not happy, can you return it or exchange it? Let me know if you can, what you’re looking for, and your budget, and I’ll see if I can help. Best of luck.

@@NorbReviews Hello .. thanks for the reply. As you asked, I listen to all type of songs and provides much preference to the clarity. I like everything well balanced in the sound. I am big fan of sony headphones and earphones and had used many wired earphones before. I even had an xperia phone. Now iam using Samsung galaxy A50 and the buds plus. The thing is that i find the buds plus providing much clarity in sound than my xm5. Everything is well balanced in buds plus. This is my first time using a ANC headphone. I Expected the xm5 to provide me much premium experience compared to the buds plus tws. But i feel like i wasted my money. I have tried all the eq settings you have mentioned and still not getting satisfied. Also I feel the volume is lower even in full compared to my buds plus. How to get a well balanced sound in xm5 like my tws or other sony earphones i had used. Or is there anything to do with the compatibility of my phone ?

Sorry for the delay in my reply. While I like the XM5, if you're looking for super clear sound, you'll want to look somewhere else. It's not an issue with your phone. If you used Apple, I'd immediately recommend the AirPods Max, since they sound like exactly what you'd want to use, but since you use Android, the experience would be sub-optimal. The Sennheiser Momentum 3 would fit what you want out of the sound perfectly, but the ANC on it is not very good. The Momentum 4 might, too, because it's clear, and it has better ANC, but it's also very heavy on the deep bass. (I have a review on the Momentum 4 where I compare the two pretty heavily.) You might also want to consider the Bose NC700 or QC45. Both are clearer and have more detail than the XM5 by default. The Bose have very good ANC, plus good sound. I've done a review on the QC45, and I also own the NC700. Both are excellent, and I think both would fit what you're looking for with sound. Now, Samsung owns AKG, and if you like the Samsung sound, check out the AKG 371BT. The complaint I hear about it is the durability, but the sound should be exactly what you're looking for, because it's the same company. I hope this helps. best of luck.

A lot. Sennheiser Momentum 4 come to mind. Master & Dynamic MW65 can also be found for about the same price and sound fantastic. (Honestly among my favorites.) Stuff by Edifier tends to also be clearer. And Bose is quite good, actually, especially the QuietComfort series. (I’ve only tried the 35ii and 45, but the most recent QC headphones.) And you can actually make the XM5 sound clearer by tuning the EQ. (I did a video on how to do this.) But if you want more *detail*, that’s where you can’t do all that much with Sony headphones.

If you can just use it wired on the PC, then the AirPods Max will be fine on PC. But wireless, it’s not very good, so you’re right. But these and the AirPods Max have a VERY different sound signature. If you want something close to the AirPods Max sound and to use it on PC, consider the Beats Studio Pro, which sounds more like the AirPods Max and has a lot of the same features.

@@ZephyrIncendium The big question is, what will you be using it for? And what kind of music do you listen to? On what devices? Whether Beats is or isn’t good depends on you. I’m actually doing a review on the Beats Studio Pro that just recently came out. (Expect it in the next month or two because I’m slow.) It’s a VAST improvement over the Studio 3: ANC, transparency, and phone calls are fantastic. ANC is arguably better than the XM5, not because of what it dampens, but because it doesn’t auto adjust quite as noticeably. Sound signature is good, on par with the AirPods Max, but a but more bass heavy (which is to be expected given its ear pads). It’s better than the XM4 and I like the default sound better than the XM5, although the XM4/5 have an EQ, which the Beats doesn’t, and the XM5, especially, can be made to sound very good. And I find the XM5 more comfortable, but that’s a personal opinion. This new Beats Studio Pro isn’t bad. Way better than the previous models. In fact, I would put the default sound signature of the XM4/5 to be on par with the Studio 3 (Key word: default). I will say, the Studio Pro is a VERY polarizing headphone for good reason. Meanwhile, the XM5 is generally loved by non-audiophiles for its great bass (same reason the Beats Pro is), while audiophiles generally hate it for being sloppy and bloated. If you want something that sounds better than all of these, look for the Sennheiser Momentum 4: I love the sound of that one, and they’ve fixed a lot of the technical issues through updates, so I don’t hesitate recommending it now. (I’ve done 2 videos on it.)

I would say the XM5 because it’s overall better. But because they feel so different, it really depends on what you like, and comfort is, I think, ultimately the most important thing.

NO. The NC XM5s are not an upgrade over the XM4s in every respect. Not even close. The auto ANC ruins it for many. It’s very hard to understand how you and other reviewers find XM5s better than XM3/XM4 when many, many users (including myself) are raging on Reddit and Sony forums about the Auto ANC. It also changes the INTENSITY of the NC. Deal breaker.

  • @NorbReviews

Hi Hikaru, The issues with adaptive ANC only really show up if you're in a situation where the air pressure is changing a significant amount. The only place I've really ever experienced anything remotely disruptive has been in airplanes, and even then, it really isn't all that frequent. (Seems to happen when the plane is changing altitudes and the cabin air pressures changes.) I travel a lot, and for me, this hasn't been that big of an issue. (I know other reviewers have called this out (notably Crinacle, who I suspect flies significantly more than I do). In fact, the overall improvements when it comes to muting higher frequencies and reducing the cabin pressure effect on the ears MORE than makes up for this (I barely hear people when wearing them), and unless someone's flying frequently, it's not something that really should impact them that much. Nevertheless, if it bothers you, if it's important to you, I empathize and will take this feedback as a reminder to be more diligent next time when reviewing something like this. Best of luck in the future, and all the best.

@@NorbReviews no you are wrong here and you are also confusing terms. It’s “Auto ANC” not “Adaptive ANC”. They are different things. It 100% is not due to “air pressure”. Look, myself and others have been in communication with Sony support for months about this. The headphones also change the INTENSITY of the NC based on the amount of ambient noise. This makes it pretty much useless in a quiet office environment where intermittent noises is the issue (such as an office) and where the XM3/XM4s did great. And Sony have forced this “feature” on customers. Just google “sony xm5 auto anc” and you’ll straight away see that this is a huge issue for many customers.
