The XM5 have absolutely no bass unless you put on the Noise Cancelling. Changing the EQ makes no difference unless Noise Cancelling is on. Pretty pointless if you just want to listen at home. Even the XM4 had excellent bass without noise cancelling. I returned the XM4 as they caused discomfort. The XM5 were a good size but atrocious bass. ANC is excellent. Stuck with my Sony C700N which have amazing bass and a great fit. AVOID THE XM5 IF YOU LOVE YOUR BASS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

Finally here!!! Been waiting for these for a very long time. Can't wait to get my hands on these.

Hope they improved the product-breaking issue of extreme battery drain from the XM4s. Gonna have to wait for some long-term usage reviews before making a decision on this.

That was a firmware bug and you can get new one from warranty. Shouldnt be a problem here!

@ For sure - mine was out of warranty unfortunately and the offer from Sony was to pay 80% of the price of a pair brand new XM4s to replace the battery. Solved it myself with a $10 battery and a KZread tutorial.

Sorry for the late response -- yes, it appears that way. Not the strongest sidetone (middle level), but no way to set the level. I personally don't mind it.

I have had the XM4s for over a year now and I have recently been plagued with battery issues. Apparently it's not uncommon, judging by the posts on the subreddit. Maybe the XM5s have improved upon this, but I don't think Sony have made a statement on this so far. Worth keeping in mind.

Apparently Sony switched the battery supplier for the XM5s, so they are aware even if they aren't making it official. I also read that they are fulfilling some out of warranty battery replacement so worth contacting them about it

It was the software update that distroyed the batteries. Some stupid guy at Sony did not test it before releasing it. Or was it done purposefully we never know.

Thanks for your review which convinced me a week ago to upgrade from the XM4. To me the XM5 has quite a significant improvement in sound quality that makes the upgrade worth it. Like you, I could not get a good seal with the stock tips. I'm getting a good seal and very good sound with SpinFit W1 tips. If you are willing to share that information, I would like to know your preferred tips for the XM5.

Great review! The question is: basically the right earbud is still the mother bud ("R" is red on the app)? Mono mode on the left earbud with Google Assistant activated is not possible for the XM5s then like their Linkbuds S? That's when the battery drain will be inconsistent too if some of us use one bud at a time, and in this case, the right earbud is the only usable one for mono mode.

Please tell me the mic is finally better than the old mic.

I am buying them and getting them Friday, if I remember I'll tell you what I find out. Edit: call quality fine per my gf and dad, but the tips don't fit my ears. I wanted to love these, they sound nice, musically speaking. I had to return though.

Good review! I'm just surprised that I don't see a lot of reviewers mentioning Sony's Anti-EF(ear fatigue) feature on these though, where the battery drains quicker on one or the other to help people from wearing them too much. Honestly, I don't think I could live without this now that I've tried it on my XM4's and Linkbuds!

Is the quick attention feature faster than the last one? I mean the time between switching from noise cancelling to ambient sound while you press the left side. It was too long in the previous version to me

The sample for the call quality part from the actual earbuds could have been longer. Bone conduction for calls I imagine would sound muffled as if blocking ear canals and trying to speak. Its almost inherently muffled unless they've successfully integrated both air conduction and bone conduction in real time to re-capture the treble in voice. Sony has been lacking in the microphone department until fairly recently overall

Thanks. Look similar to XM4's, which I love (but I am intrigued by the XSM5's smaller size ). AGREED on 1) Seal is key and 2) Provided buds do not seal, and I also switched them out with silicone buds from cheaper Sony headphones (of which I have tons). WF-XM4 buds are good for travel, but if you want better sound quality, the over-the-ear WH-XM4's and WH-XM5's sound better and are more comfortable.

I've been watching reviews and i want to upgrade from my wf 1000 xm4 because of its battery drain and because the touch control radomly activate is it worth it to go xm5 or just wait for the xm6 to release someday (before you ask i don't have any warranty anymore for the xm4)

My immediate reaction is that the glossy finish makes it look like a cheep plastic copy of the xm4 whether or not it’s actually made of plastic. (I had the xm4 until I lost them a while back and they truly were amazing but they felt premium which a plastic or shiny metal feel just won’t do if your accustomed to that awesome feeling finish

Do we know if the xm5s have the same battery problem as the xm4s?

Looks like barely an upgrade overall to tech/sound quality so you should be fine with the XM4's, which can be found for a deal on ebay with their certified refurb vendors (comes with warranty, I've had two pairs and they were like new, no problems, amazing buds)

Get the XM5s. Can wait for them to go on sale. There is enough of a difference to merit buying them over XM4s if you don’t have XM4s. Voice calling is significantly improved. Drivers are improved as well for sound quality. And next-gen processors…

The xm5's have a find my buds feature...not in the app though. It can can be accessd in the Bluetooth connections. They can be made to ring out from there.

@3:46 was very interesting to me... so if you talk the music pauses to help hear conversations... but what happens if you decide to start singing? i wouldnt want the music to pause did you test this?

I’m guessing these will be release the same time apple release ios17 which is suppose to improve upon the Airpod Pro 2 features?

I waited for both the Technic AZ80 and Sony XM5 but couldn't wait indefinitely for the XM5's. I went with the AZ80's and no regrets regardless what the XM5's offer which thanks to this fine thorough review seems a tad less than the Technics! The 80's are unbelievably top notch and the sound quality is sublime!! Best of luck to all with their choice:)

Omg same. I'm loving the sound, just sucks that the ANC isn't dead silent. Still strong. The transparency is amazing unlike the xm4.

I bought both to compare. The technics have a better fit for me, better design (imo), and better form factor. But when i listened to the sonys and experienced the nc, i couldn't go back to the technics. For some reason, the technics sound isn't as punchy when using nc. The wonys all around sound noticeably better to me.

Thanks for watching. They're just smaller. A tad better for sound but that's subjective. I like the Bose -- they fit my ears really well and would be better for running because they fit more securely. But just a different look. We will see some firmware updates from Sony (and Bose, too).

Ok but nobody is mentioning wind noise? Its still in the app for the xm4 "automatic wind noise reduction" which is critical to many use cases. Can I still use these for say cycling? Currently the mx4 are literally the only noise cancelling iems I can use, do the mx5's still have this feature? It's not in the app screens you showed.

Wher did you purchase the ear tips you changed out

I have the xm4s, the size and the tips what keep me from wearing them as much as I'd like. They stay in ok but I i have to keep adjuating them because they'll putrude out to the point of falling out. I've tried multiple tips because the ones it shipped with deteriorated and didnt stay in well. I dont have the money to get a new pair but if the decrease in size made them more wearable and less odd-looking I'd be content with them.

The XM4 tips are good for sound quality/sealing but they do not last long at all, hope MX5 has some improvements on the martial where it lasts longer… probs not.

5:17 I currently own the xm4 and previously had the 3s. How did they make another set of earbuds without ANY native “find my” feature either in the buds or ideally the case? That was my #1 desired feature in an update. Maybe sound is a bit better with these, but the transparency mode on my wife’s AirPods Pro 2 are way better than my xm4s and she can find her case when she misplaces it all the time, lol

@@oneib4519 my wife was using my old m3s and they stopped working a few months back. Got her AirPods Pro 2. I like the tips on my 4s and I think they’re the same. 4 sizes and they’re kind of foamy so they conform to the ear well

i've just unpacked mine XM5.... first question (i had the same problem with XM4) How to enable AMBIENT SOUND and stop the music WITH THE SAME ONE TOUCH ?? sounds so obvious ... (and it works like this with Sennheisers) (i don't want to keep holding one earbud for a minute if i want to talk more - quick attention mode) and pressing one earbud to stop music and second to switch to ambient mode .....sounds sooo dumb ....?

They seem pretty interesting. Although on a design standpoint I wish they had followed the WHXM5 with the all black or all off white design. Personally not a fan of the color accent on the grills.

speaking of dead silence ANC in an earbud form factor, my 2-year-old Bose QC Mark 1 is still the one to beat. Plus it sits on your ear not inside your ear i.e. more comfortable. Sound quality is surprisingly good for classical music!

I have both have to agree that Bose knows comfort. The XM5 are great but Boses ANC is still unmatched and for the Sonys you should spend a lot of time finding the right tips.

@@crBudgetWatches yes, with Bose QC 1, because of its on-ear design, you just press against your ears regardless of the tips.

My Xm4's worked pretty well until the recent firmware drained the battery. Might be a good case to pick up another pair while waiting for the xm5's wrinkles.

They did an excellent job on Linkbuds S, also it costs half the XM-5. I've been using them for half a year, they are amazing. I can live without wireless charging. One thing I do not like about them, is you cannot finetune the touch controls. Sony pls

thats the thing about sony. its sound a bit too warm but it also sound realistic and balance. its good but its like its missing something. it seem to be missing lack of high or richness. although i still like them a lot

The LDAC codec is a killer feature when you have a compatible phone. The audio quality's way better, not "slightly". I've been using the XM4 headphones for almost 4 years and I'm still happy with them. My only complaints is that earbuds would be more comfortable in Summer, and some strong wind tends to mess with the tactile pad, so I deactivated it. If you make a lot of calls, though, Apple Aurpods pro have much better mikes.

My experience is the connection stability is so bad using LDAC that it's not worth it. I end up using the lower end codec anyway so it doesn't disconnect every 5 minutes.

I just got my Sony earbuds today and if you like looking like Shrek you're going to love these headphones!

About the high res audio codecs mentioned at 5:01 if you can CNET / David how about arranging a blind test with ~ 12 people, some pre teen, teen and adults (since hearing changes as we age) and seeing if the claimed high res audio quality can be discerned both at a studio and at a regular street setting. Then afterwards running a second similar test this time letting the participants know that they are listening to earbuds with a superior codec, but unbeknownst to them they were given low res ones. Afterwards watching to see if the testers claim that the audio is fine, meaning the 'high res' tag just offers a psychological edge or if they can spot (rather hear!) the difference. *Edit + Also trying something similar with other buds - like the Samsung Buds 2 Pro which claims superior 24 Bit audio to gauge if it's mainly marketing hype or a discernable advantage - would be great.

You can definitely hear the difference. If LDAC goes off for whatever reason when listening to certain music, you will go searching in settings to re enable it. That being said, the Sony DSEE "fake hi res" engine is amazing and actually works almost as well as pure LDAC and a in most cases most people wouldn't realise that they aren't the same.

Does the left chanel fail just after 12 months like the old model? My left bud lasts 5 to 10 minutes. I am not the only one who has this problem.

Im pretty sure LinkBuds S is much comfortable with silicone eartips and it is much smaller. LinkBuds can sit nicely in your ear

I guarantee the Linkbuds S are still smaller and more comfortable. I can tell by looking at the three lined up side by side.

Great except for two points: 1. Call aounded muffled AF 2. Touch controls < physical controls

What do you mean by passive? Usually that refers to no active noise canceling on and the noise reduction you get from having a tight seal. I think Bose does noise canceling better for some frequencies but Sony better for others. We’re talking very slight differences.

@@richardmeredith7102 If the XM5s are that much of an upgrade, I can tell you that the passive noise cancelling is fantastic. I have the XM4s, and the passive noise cancelling is stellar. I use them whenever I travel, usually get stuck with the wing seats. Even without the ANC on, I can barely hear anything. It's really thanks to the foam ear tips. It is almost scary how quiet it is with ANC on, so I honestly rarely use it unless I really just want to be in my own world. As long as you've got music playing, even without ANC on, you will not be hearing most noises (for reference, I listen to rock, so it may vary with your music choice, this is just my personal experience). Hope this helps!

Agreed, it's such an awesome feature and I find it to be much more precise. I'm constantly accidentally pausing instead of skipping with my XM4s because of the tap area on the earbud, but with my Linkbuds it's easy to do one or two quick clear taps on my cheekbone. Really don't understand why they've not brought the feature across, especially considering the bone conductivity functionality for voice pickup

I don’t know if I’ll get the xm5"s just because i had the xm4"s for 2 years and after the software update this year the battery on the earphones only lasted 1 hour , but before the update it lasted me 6-7hours even though they are 2 years old….

Why didn't you compare them to the pixel buds pro?

Try wearing them for a week to find a proper seated fit might help but then should include a med large ear tips

Samsung phones have a hearing test feature to determine which frequencies you can't hear and it adjust the sound so you can hear them. As you age your hearing degrades and you can't hear certain frequencies anymore. Anker liberty pro 3 has this sound test too on their app. Sony should implement that in it's app. Also, the 5 band equalizer is pretty lame too.

ANC won't be better than QC2, maybe head to head but the features are stacked in the xm5

Same here, I can’t get a good seal and as a result the noise cancelling is near non existent. Unfortunately, Sony has integrated the wax guard into the tips rather than the body of the buds which makes replacing the tips expensive. No problem with noise cancelling on my new Bose Ultra and Jabra 10.

Sorry to hear you are having the same problem. I suspect due to the many negative comments about these buds, that unless your ear canals are of a certain shape, they are not going to work. I am hoping to make a case to our Consumer Protection body as they plainly don't fit the definition of noise cancelling as described.

It dulls the sound of my dehumidifier, but that doesn't bother me. I was going to take them back tomorrow and say there's a problem, but I know that's dishonest of me. If I just say they're not as effective as I expected, they may refuse. I hope you're successful with your consumer rights case.

what do you think is better for absolute audio quality between these and the Beoplay EQ? I have the latter and they're still going strong so I was wondering whether this would be an upgrade or a downgrade.

Maybe a slight upgrade with Sony but probably not worth it. EQ are good.

These look awesome. But until my Linkbuds S die, I'll stick with them.

No need, LinkBuds S is already great...you got LDAC DSEE Extreme same like XM5

There’s some sidetone so you hear your voice in the buds.

Did they fix the issue of always having the right ear bud connected? Unlike Apple airpods where you can use one or two bud the Sony ones only support right only or both but not just the left bud

assign the playback control to the bud you would like to use. I swap left and right buds when needed. I only hate that i needed to do this manually instead of it being automatic like my Tevi's

The only the reason I didn't buy sony ear bud because my M4 battery were distroyed by software upgrades. I miss the sound quality in Ipods that I got in Sony.

Is it smaller or equal to the size of the Sony LinkBuds S?

i had to return the x4s they put way too much weight on my ear, very discomforting the sound quality was amazing nonetheless
