    I had a Sony LBT-D505 system with an ST-D505 Receiver. It would show the clock flashing 0:00 denoting standby but wouldn’t power up. I followed this guide and changed the big 35V 1000uF electrolytic capacitor for a new Panasonic one. Pushed the power button and it went straight to tuner. Cost £3.45 for a pack of two capacitors and saved the whole system. Many thanks from the UK for sharing your knowledge. I’m most obliged to you.

    I like the way you used the clue of the standby LED being dim to shorten the troubleshooting.

    Capacitors in older electronics dont have a visual damage so you have to check the suspected capacitor with esr meter,personally i have a Thandar TC200 RLC from1993 which measures up to 200uF but has D (dissipation) similar to ESR which was totally unknown this era and can test the capacitors without removing or desolering any pin.Human designed machines with single layer pcb,transformer and analog circuits without any software and other "smart sophisticated" grand b*s.

    Good job in getting that Sony stereo amplifier going,,,very interesting how a capacitor caused the standby power issues,,and it works great after replacing cap,,,and resoldered power transistor too. I wear a led headlamp when it come to needing that much light on soldering repair jobs on electronic circuits. Looks like i see a few exposed wires and terminals on that desklamp,,,are they mains power? Or low voltage? I know it must b real hot there too,,,as I can hear the background noise of the ceiling fan going full speed.

    My electronics teachers first words were: Everything is battery and ground and 2 always check the power supply... then he showed us how to bypass a hydro meter...

  • @12voltvids

    @12voltvids

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well that would be an old analog meter. Try that now and see how fast someone is out to check it. Smart meters not only report consumption but they also monitor voltage drop. Have a voltage drop on your drop, that isn't being reported as consumption then something is wrong. It could be a bad termination, but the resulting arcing would be detected by the meter, or a loss of power. (to ground or by theft) Either way, a voltage drop that isn't explained by consumption is going to trigger an alarm, and a crew will come out to check. Neighbour works for BC Hydro and was telling me they nabbed a bunch of people that bypassed the meter when the smart meters went in.

    Hello Sir, are you still around making repairs on things like this? I have a Sony 5.1 Stereo Model STR-DE685 and up until recently everything was fine except the center speaker channels that didn’t send out sound. Well a day ago the unit went out and would not display anything. I press power button and can hear the first click and little orange lights turn on but are also dim, but nothing else goes on and no sound, not even the display. Your video seems like I could make the same repair, but I’m not quite understanding which one you switched compared to my unit. I have a multimeter and decent skills, but unfamiliar with the exact way to test it. Not sure if you’re familiar with my unit or if you’ve done this before too. I’d like to get this unit working again and I wasn’t worried about the center channels as much. However if I can fix this I’d love to speak with you. Im not as experience as you, yet I’m sure with a little help maybe I can make the swap like you did here and get it going again. That second click and relay isn’t hitting and the first click is definitely working. I even opened the little cap and can see the click over and contact, but after that nothing other than dim orange lights. My uncle who use to help us with these things passed away and he was the only one I knew that could do this. If you’re still tinkering with things let me know I’d like to be in touch. If you’re in Colorado even better! Lol. Hope to hear from you maybe we can make a new video with your assistance. It seems like it should be easier than it is, I’m just lost on how to diagnose the exact one to swap. Seems like the Same exact problem in a way. Who knows. I can send you pics or a video of my own if it would help. I read Sony has problems like that typically and are easier fixes than not. Prior to this the unit seemed to work pretty well. At worse case scenario, maybe I could send it to you to take a look at. Hoping we can figure this out ahead of that step. Thanks so much for you video it seems helpful, Im just stuck now and it definitely sounds like the same area of issue. Thanks!

    Alright, so I'm working on a Sony STRAV880 right now, and it does something a bit similar. Powers on, stand by light turns on, but nothing really after that. If I leave it plugged in for awhile, I can hear a relay clicking on the back board when I try to change the input (phono, to tape, etc) but that's it. Could I be looking at something similar where the stand by isn't supplying enough power to the rest of the board?

    @@12voltvids Ah okay. (this is my first time attempting to repair things like this, so I'm still learning a lot. I did start to look through the path after the power supply board and did find a blown resistor. Couldn't see all the stripes on it so I looked it up in the repair manual and ordered some. We'll see how it goes. If it blows again I'll keep digging.
