Gnomageddon was an online action game developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4 (PS4). The project originated as a small demo made during a game jam at a division of Sony San Diego, and was gradually expanded upon. The game was planned to be free to play with optional microtransactions, and would have featured three game modes as well as six classes of gnome. The game's main mode would have been a standard death match mode that pitted teams of good and evil gnomes against each other. The game was ultimately cancelled due to the studio as a whole not bringing in enough revenue, which was partly due to Sony San Diego's MOBA game Kill Strain under performing.

Honestly? The idea of a garden gnome game sounded incredibly stupid but the more I learned about it the more fun it sounded. We need more games that aren't afraid to be silly and whimsical.

Right?! The ideas they had with the makeshift equipment are just brilliant! I would´ve loved to play that game
"due to Black licorice being the most disgusting candy" Too true.
This was cancelled but they went through with "Black Tiger"
Since Fable 3 I've had an Extreme distain for gnomes, This game would have changed that. Now I fear I may never be free of my hate.

And considering the story and gameplay, it sounds like it would have been quite tight.
When developers have this much passion for a project I feel it would've been a good game. Sounded way more interesting than Kill Strain.
"Surviving a zombie apocalypse won the creative game jam" God, I shudder to think what the ones that didn't win were. "You're a dude who shoots aliens/Terrorists"? "You're a knight who fights fantasy monsters"?

You'd be surprised. As someone who worked with a indie group no matter how amazing a game sounded it always lost to the zombie games. It got to the point where I gave up. So, as a joke I pitched a game where you're a gold fish trying to solve a murder. Only you were the murderer and you didn't know it due to your poor goldfish memory. That somehow won that pitch session but wound up destroying the group.

I have a question: have you lost your virginity?
in alternate times line gnomemageden would exist we are truly on the wrong time line
Hopefully the main creators of gnomageddon will come back to be able to make that game if they truly have faith in it.
"A game about garden gnomes? No! We need to make a generic alien game that our team has zero passion for."
So an awful, aimless pile of dudebro-bait trash that was painfully generic from its very inception brought down an innovative, colorful, unique game full of potential just by.. existing. Well, that's depressing.
Didn't know there was a licensed Keemstar game

That game looked super interesting and had potential to be a prominent Playstation series and could have easily saved SD Studios. The story sounded like a goofy Ardman studios movie which would have gone over really well. Infact with all the gadget ideas it reminded me alot of Wallace and Gromet

Gnomageddon would have made for a really good Aardman movie giving its England setting and lighthearted, whimsical style.
Dammit, Sony.
Man, I remember hearing the term "Gnomageddon" in an episode of Phineas and Ferb. Great video, Liam!
I still think Gnomageddon shows some promise. It looks whimsical and fun, like some early PlayStation titles. Shame what happened to it.

Kurt Yarish Reminds me of Fat Princess, which was a pretty cool title. I really wish this had come to fruition.
I only remeber kill strain because Out of nowhere I got a notification that I had gotten into the closed beta when I had never even heard of it.
Yikes this is the first time I've heard of Kill Strain. I would agree with their developers, Sony not supporting them caused their own demise. Then again I think my PS Vita feels the same way. I know everyone has been all about Sony (for the most part) since the extremely successful launch of the PS4 but this is two large instances of Sony not backing its own products and the consumers losing out.
Plot Twist: It was Half Life 3 expanding on the gnome concept.
That black licorice part is hilarious xD
I remember hearing about Gnomageddon! I had almost forgotten about it. Thanks for another great video.
So wait they killed an entire Studio because of a failure of a single game. Didn't give all the materials back to their creators. And then proceeded to kill off any chance of a completely unrelated game.
I would have played this ... damn you sony.

Im not a gnelf. Im gnot a gnoblin! Im a Gnome! And you've been GNOMED!!!
Gnomes riding a flamingo while throwing Molotov cocktails, how did that not sell it right there?
Kill Strain is another in a long line of examples of Sony not promoting one of its first part projects correctly. I'm not saying the game would have gotten a massive audience, but you need to do SOME promotion if you're publishing, especially if it's a multiplayer title. Hell, if Microsoft can both to devote promotion to Phantom Dust, Sony should be able to promote their stuff.
Honestly sounded like a blast with potential, such a shame a creative idea had to go to waste.
Before clicking this video I thought it would be a game I wouldn't care about, after hearing all they had planned for Gnomageddon, it saddens me this game never came out. Sony really dropped the ball on this one.
This kind of story just connects with me on a deeeep level. As a student/freelance game artist and designer, i have witnessed all too often cases where a smaller team's innovative game idea gets kicked aside to fund or support another team's more standard, follow-the-trend game concept. Yeah, i get that it's a safer and more optimal use of manpower, but it's just kind of heartbreaking that this is how most game innovations get shut down. How the market gets stale. Ironically, look at how big of a financial failure killstrain turned out to be. Following the trends ended up making it just another nickel in the pile.
Dang, this sounded like a pretty promising and interesting game.

Gnomeageddon I feel would have been right at home amongst the PlayStation family of IPs. Plus, it would have made for a great family-friendly game, or an IP that was suitable for children. Sony doesn’t have many of those outside of Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet and Sly Cooper.
Would love to see more footage, specifically a full match!

SONY:KILLING COOL IDEAS
Great journalism. Certainly not something id be able to get from a google search. Keep it up ^^
Dude I'm sad now, that sounds rad as heck
killing a game that was well planned out because a different directionless game made by a different team didn't get much money is pretty shitty
I swear if this does a Bayonetta and goes to the Switch exactly this way, no replacement with Pikman or Splatoon 2, it would be massive. I'd love to see it on the Switch.
Man...I wish this actually released, I want to play it
Sony really missed out by passing on Gnomeageddon. This game would have made for a great addition to the PlayStation family of IPs, sitting comfortably alongside Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet and Sly Cooper.
Aww that's a sad story. Whenever I see Gnomes it makes me think of that one King of the Hill episode where Peggy buys a garden gnome and Hank Hill absolutely hates it. Such a funny episode. The gnome's name was Winklebottom lol I'm also really impressed with how much lore and story they came up with for Gnomageddon.
Gnomageddon sounds like a lot fun! Through the descriptions of both the gameplay and the story, this truly could have been something very special. It has all the ingredients of another fun, quirky family-friendly game IP for Sony, fitting comfortably alongside Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, LittleBigPlanet and PaRappa the Rapper.
This looks like one of those awesome games that I wouldn't of ever played, and yet I'm sad to live in a world where it doesn't exist.
People in the top of the corporate pyramid are so incapable of recognizing products with potential, it's baffling companies don't burn to the ground because of the sale loses.
I don't know why people says it's a flat and boring game. The gameplay was early in development, not the finished product. I think it would've been the breath of life that Sony needed to keep going.
I would love to play this game
Wow, I wish this was a thing. I love the licorice-driven plotline.
i REALLY like watching these canceled game videos but they always leave me with a sense of wanting and even a little sadness. This is not a style of game that I play but by golly i wish it existed!
Great video!
Alongside being a fun game, Gnomageddon would have made for such a great fun and quirky animated film on par with the films of Dreamworks, Laika, Warner Bros. and Aardman.
So they killed off their original and wacky game and instead went with the unoriginal boring one. Just look at Gnomageddon! I love those character designs. The gnome healer wielding what looks to be a gum ball machine. The gnome with two cactus plants wired together. Would've been awesome.
What a great kickstarter video!
Those poor guys. This is the first i've heard of it and i'm hooked on that storyline.
Can you guys do a video on Scalebound plz? I would love to know about what happened the once high anticipated game fell into demise
This game sounds and looks more like a Nintendo game than a Sony game.

Not really? Sony has a long history of whimsical and colorful games and demos. Like Astro's Playroom and LittleBigPlanet. Also, these gnomes are violent.
Canceled games always sound so cool. It's a shame this got canceled because of a game like Kill Strain which looked boring from the beginning.

Holy crap, the Garden Gnome (the one that used leaves) is like a mixture of Mei and Reinhardt!
I agree that this game has potential. The more colourful action games are starting to crop up and I think an F2P title like this with this much passion put into it would have done decently. It's a shame. I feel sorry for Kill Strain too. I had never heard of it before now and I can definitely see how it would have been buried in the abyss that is the PSN store.
Am I the only one thinking this could have been a good game and have no idea who the heck Keemstar is?
They should kickstart that gnome game
This sounds like a really fun game, it's a shame it was never made
Would still love to play this :/
Sony not letting the SD workers not take their work was so wrong; art is an extension of a person's feelings and personality and that is a terrible thing to remove.
Wow, they really backed the wrong horse. The Killstrain game, which I actually never heard of, sounded boring and generic right off. Gnomageddon meanwhile sounds super cool. You have the novelty of being a small fantasy character in an oversized realistic setting, you got bright colors, and a kooky story. Sounds great. Free to play is always dubious, though. And multiplayer-only is a huge gamble.
When I first saw the name Gnomageddon, I instantly thought of Carmageddon but with gnomes.
In the end of the match the owner of the house would be like "what the FUCK MY YARD" looks a neighbor and fight one another and both teams button mash to decide who wins
Wow, that story was way more engaging than a game called gnomagedon had any right to be. I'm actually sad it never happened lol
Man, Gnomageddon sounded silly at first but it won me over and sounded great. I would've played it
Who else thought of Phineas and Ferb when you saw the title and thumbnail?
Not much is gnome about this game...
I had never heard of Kill Strain at all until this video...
Gbomaggedon actually looked really interesting.
i only know of sd studios because of there logo is always in the beginning of the mlb the show games
The garden gnome game sounded so charming and interestingly deep story for what you'd expect, I would be all for that game, such an unfair business being a game developer under others control like that, very unfair to close them all down over the reason they did.
I'd have loved to play gnomageddon... that sounded fun!
The gnome game has surprisingly deep lore
I can't believe that boring-looking edgy game killed a interesting, colorful game and a studio.
i saw the gnome and i thought it was goinf to be keemstar narrating this
I didn't know SIEA had a studio in San Diego.
Great video! But just so you know, PAIN was made by Idol Minds, not San Diego Studios.
0:38 Aye ModNation Racers is in the background
The modnation flashes hit my nostalgia bad
This reminds me how Sony canceled Popeye in favor of the Emoji Movie
I remember playing the Kill Strain beta, because I was given a code, it was probably given out to pretty much everyone, but it still got me at least a _little_ interested in playing it. After getting into the game, I noticed that there was a special skin that you'd obtain after playing a certain amount (not sure of the criteria though, it's been too long), so even though I'd probably never touch the game again after the beta would end, I really wanted that special skin just because. The game was fun, albeit quite repetitive and uninteresting in it's theme's. I enjoyed it, but I couldn't see playing it again after that, even though I found the ~asymmetrical 3-team versus to be fun (2 human teams and a single mutant team), there was only one map that I remember playing on, maybe there was more, but I feel like I'd remember that. It wasn't a bad game, but I'd never recommend it.
He wasn't wrong, I had no idea Kill Strain existed.
This feels more like a pitch than an informative video
Man I'm sad this was canceled. It sounded like just silly fun. Wish I could have played it.
I thought this video had to do with an earlier version of the PS4. The title is really confusing at a quick glance.
I would have loved playing gnomageddon
I have a craving for Black Licorice now. Yum.
