I envy your talent with detecting bad solder joints. Nice job being patient, and staying logical. Finishing the video, I see you used a method in deciding with solders to reflow. I've been soldering for nearly 50 years and I can't spot them like you do. They all look bad to me or they all look good, LOL!!

My RDR-HX715 is still working with the exception of the front display that slowly dimmed over time to the point of being non visible - after the part was not available. I can get the same important info displayed on TV screen so this was only a nice feature. Was thinking vacuum loss but may now check this issue in the high voltage section feeding it. I have had "cold solder" problems with several of my Sony video components for the last 20-30 years. I think due to the fact that they went to wave soldering the boards. Thanks for the info!

I have a RDR-HXD890, same layout inside this one. I sear by it, its my main dvd recorder. The VFD being dim does not surprise me, my VFD has dimmed in certain well used sections. It was interesting to know that the solder joints could be sub-par. I will think of those should my one stop working. I recently had it open to service the dvd drive. Pain to get it out and back in again as they use the dvd drive chassi to keep all the cables nice and tidy, there are clicps everywhere. All I wanted to do was remove the clamp so I can clean the rubber/felt ring on the motor that grips the disc as that was dusty and discs were spinning freely at times resulting in failed burns etc when the speed changed.

All He had to do was take the Hard drive out and Insert It Into a Docking Station straight Into the computer. I still got one of these though the top of the rage one and It still works. And I have some VHS tapes to transfer this weekend coming (14/09/2019) so will be using It for that. It stopped transferring data once, I found out It was the Blue/Red Data ribbon wire that had failed. I swapped It out for a new one and It all works great again. Nice Job 12Volts. Keep them coming.

No that won't work. Tried that on a pioneer a few years ago that the DVD drive had failed on. Not only could the computer not read the drive (It was formatted in a non standard format) but when it was plugged back into the DVD recorder the system detected that the drive had been tampered with and proceeded to format the drive and wipe the clients home videos, about 100 hours that he had recorded from all his 8mm and hi8 tapes. He was pissed to say the least. I did well on that though, as I was able to get all his tapes and archive them on my equipment. I haven't tried pulling the drive on my Sony or Panasonic because I don't want to loose what I have on the HDD on them.

Nice.I use the PAL version of this as a HDMI-converter for digitizing tapes. Thankfully they're not like the euro (and maybe US as well?) Panasonic DVD/HDD recorders where some ELNA caps in the power supply pop, and the input switcher chip goes bad - possibly due to the bad caps. It's a shame as some of them have some extremely good TBC/filter in the video decoder for stabilizing crappy VHS tapes.

Yes I have the 730 model, and the display isn't super bright either, but remember, the component is designed to live in your stereo cabinet, or the stand below a TV. Nobody wants a clock display so bright it lights up the room. The work bench is very bright. I have 6 8 watt LEDS overhead, plus 2 40 watt fluorescent lamps, and a 65 watt and 42 watt CFL bulb blasting in from behind me. 230 foot candles, or about 2500 lux is how bright the work bench is lit, so it is no wonder that displays look so dim.

Thats amazing as I have never had luck fixing issues with simple resoldering, that didnt already look like cracked solder. Although, it is that lead-free garbage so anything is possible. The other thing is during the resoldering process, you re-heated the components too and could have a thermally intermittent component, Now, I did see alot of that. Remember the freeze-spray/heat gun days? I do!

@@THEtechknight Yes they had some bad panels for sure. I have 2 Sony sets both good. Both free sets. I went over the panel problems when working on a 50" Sony. Early ones failed with dumb ass owners sprayed cleaner on the screen thinking they had to clean the like old TV's and the cleaner ran down the screen and into the tabs corroding them. So the Rockets at Sony flipped the panel and put the tcon at the top. Heat rises and the lamp heat then cooled the panel drive ICS which are bonds to the fpc attached to the glass. I have 2 sets with bad panels currently. They are both Samsung and they are plasma. They have a few thin colored veritical lines and are just used for gaming. Again sets that were given to me.

  • @12voltvids

A drive used for video will never need to be defragged because the files are very big. I have DVD recorders I use in my archive business that are very old, and they burn disks perfectly. I have one that has done probably 1000 disks (toshiba) and still works perfectly. I think many fail prematurely more due to environment they are stored / used in. My house is air conditioned, which keeps the humidity down and nobody is permitted to smoke in my house, and never have. The kitchen is far away from my equipment, and because we cook with gas, there is a big ass exhaust fan overhead to clear the air.

You can use the build in optimise command (in the menu on my RDR-HXD890) to defrag the files. At other times I just pull out the HDD and plug it into my PC to run a SMART test to confirm its still good. Edit: Oh you have a panasonic. Well the SMART test will still work, but that wont fix an issue only tell you if there is one. If you dont have anything on the HDD that is important you could try erasing it and having your unit reformat it as if it were an new HDD. research how to do this first, in sonys for example you MUST use the same capacity. They are locked to a specific capacity. You may also need a service remote so check first. Heck if you are going to try this see if you can put in a newer bigger hdd anyway!

The client had a great technology for this DVD recorder and HDD recorder, much better than my Magnavox Hi-Fi VHS and DVD recorder. =) Even when the HDD had failed, it can be replaced with the new HDD like 1TB HDD and make the profile go bigger and give plenty of space! I don't know that I see the HDD size is 160GB in size, and I'm not sure that the HDD is made in China. Both Chinese and Philippines HDD is very notorious poor design and whenever it failed, the HDD itself will lose data partition and can't get it recover from the HDD and re-format the HDD any longer, and there for, the HDD is no longer reliable for any device. But the Thailand's HDD is better and more reliable than the Chinese and Philippines HDD.
