I've got my Sony FX9 but haven't used the catalyst software yet, definitely going to throw my footage into it tomorrow to see what it does to the clips I've already shot. Quite concerned with the motion blur when it's stabilised, BUT you're shooting with fences in the background so it makes that vertical blur so much more prominent. Can guarantee if you shoot in a more normal place the blur wouldn't be as crazy 🔥 Anyway great video man! 💯

This introduces a whole new vocabulary for cinematographers, since you can have the same scene, same shot, and get the unstabilized and stabilized versions on the same timeline and cut between both... and that is fan-fucking-tastic

I have an FX6 that uses the gyroscope metadata for stabilization also. I personally would prefer in body stabilization. For one, doing stabilization in post requires that you crop in on the image, losing clarity and tightening your framing. Secondly, it takes time. Yeah, it's fast compared to normal software stabilization, but you still have to go through all of your clips one by one and stabilize them then render out a new clip for each, which adds a generation loss and takes more hard drive space. Thirdly (and this might just be a mistake on my part), although I copied all of the data off of my cards with all metadata files in their respective folders, I somehow ended up unable to stabilize the footage in Catalyst for a lot of clips, leaving me with very shaky footage. That last one could be my fault, but if it happened to me, it could happen to anyone. It's a cool idea and it works, but I wish they could have both in-body stabilization and the gyro metadata, so we could choose and, better yet -they could somehow combine the gyro data with the in body stabilization compensation data and let us use both in combination!

If you had a ready rig, wouldnt that help with holding which would limit the up and down movement. I dont own a ready rig but I get what you mean when holding your ronin with only your back muscles. And I honestly love the combo mainly because at the end of the day the gimbal will save more of your image. Less crop and more butter smooth action! Love the review, getting me to want to buy the FX9.

You should check out a SteadXP for you're Pocket Cinema Camera. It adds similar gyroscopic stabilization to the pocket with the exception it doesn't support Braw So one would have to either convert the Braw footage or shoot in Prores.

Did you try stabilize and export a clip longer than a couple of minutes? I'm afraid to use that function, I only rely on stabilizing in lens now, because at a certain clip lengt, Catalyst cannot export it anymore.. crashes at 3-5% everytime. Search the FB group, been discussed there.

@@AlexDon 2-10 minutes probably works fine, but if you follow a person for a longer time, live on tape or similar, you won't be able to export from it from Catalyst sadly. I've tried my iMac, Macbook and MacPro. Search the FB-group and this is an discussed issue people should know of, because you might end up having to stabilize with Premiere which isn't nearly as good and much slower, or you have to live with an image that could have been significantly better if you used the lens stabiliser.

Proper hand-held footage is not "shaky footage" and it actually is opposite to the trend which is to use gimbals for literally everything. Hand-held and shoulder-held actually are the more traditional ways of shooting. The "shaky-cam" moves we see in horror movies are just dumb IMHO. Shoulder and hands + tripod? Still bread, butter and wine for camera operators...
