Hey @Sjoerd Wess, how is the codec compared to bmpcc did you struggle using the sony codec, can it match the quality and easy of use ?

Nice camera! I agree, the low light is an issue but seems to fairly well to adjust.

I think it's great that the FX30 is the same size as the FX3, so if you've bought a rig it can be used on both.

This is so exciting for the price point. An amazing entry point into a cinema camera. I love that Sony has options dedicated to video vs dedicated to photo. You could buy an A7RV for photo and then an FX cam for video and share the lenses. Hmm… time to switch from Canon? After the 3rd party lens news, very tempted.

@@JarraxQ No support, at least for now, for 3rd party lenses. You have to buy canon rf. That’s enough for me to make the switch. Sony here I come!

@@JarraxQ that's unfortunate, I think 3rd party lenses are vital so that we have the choice, many users have specific preferences like weight/reach/apertures, I been using Sony since 2017 with mostly native glass but do have several Sigma & Tamron lenses because they offer something that Sony doesn't, like Sigma28-70mmf2.8 being the lightest full frame e-mount in it's class

I assume they kept the body size to maintain compatibility with FX line accessories and add-ons, especially the cage. Plus, if the body is identical, perhaps they cut on the costs of tooling for the new camera which also helps keeping the price tag down.

Excellent video, the FX30 can definitely also be used as a travel/vacation vlogging camera or a B camera, I would definitely be interested in using something like this instead of my A1 a lot of times while traveling... So glad that Sony made this FX30. Very affordable and gives new flimmakers more options now. I would recommend this cinema camera over the a7C, a7iii, a6600 and a7Sii. At $1,800, heck you can get 2 lenses to go along with the fx30. Sony outdone themselves again.

QUESTION: Do you know if you can activate the "crop mode" (1.62x) without entering 120fps? Say, shooting in the 4k 1.62x crop mode at regular frame-rates (24, 25, 30) with sync audio, just as a way to extend a prime lens' field of view? I checked all of the review videos that came out and none show the menu options that concern that. (Thank you for the great review!).

That’s what’s I’m thinking. I’m Looking into buying my first camera to shoot short films and even though I’d like the best of both worlds and would like a hybrid camera to shoot videos and photos as well as a full frame sensor, but when it comes down to it for what I want and need this is pretty much the best option

The image quality is great, however call me crazy but I can just FEEL the sensor crop. That being said, it's hard to beat the price point for the quality you get. It seems like a killer value.

Been shooting the ZV-e10 to get by until something like this FX30 came around. Might pull the trigger buying it and post to sell the ZV-e10 to offset the cost. Coming from old school cameras, the addition of XLR included with the handle, TC, and some other features, along with 4k60...hard not to buy. I've seen a lot of comparisons with low light, so will see how that goes. Will be great for lit scenes at least and will manage in tougher conditions.

Did you have more sharpening on the fx30? Or is it the oversampling? Definetly looks sharper🥶

I would love to get a 6k pro but I would also like a full frame camera which I think the A7sIII is…I also would like it to specifically be made for cinematic purposes but also be cheap as possible. So if I could just have a black magic 6k fx30 7III that would be amazing 😭

FX30 looks great. A fine camera especially for the price. But FX3 gather much more light and you can clearly see on your face. Much better dynamic range.

I like the idea of it more than what I’m able to see from the footage. The colors are so so. Might have a bit of magenta tint making you look a bit flushed than usual and I did noticed that light color changing in the background too. Who knows? Might improve or get fix with a firmware update? Kinda wished that there was some work-around to make Sony aps-c cameras more into a full-frame with a focal reducer with a Sony lens, but I don’t mind them. I feel they get a bad wrap when they’re bigger sensors than micro-4/3rds, and for a while, Panasonic’s video centric micro 4/3rd sensor cameras were popular, that’s not to say the sensor size equates to their value. I think it’s what you’re able to do with it that counts. Would it be nice to have a full-frame sensor camera? Sure, but it’s what you do with the tool that gives it value. I suppose with color grading, it could be a more pleasing image, for myself, but don’t have that sort of money, upfront, to buy that; maybe in a year or so, I can save up while juggling all my payments and other necessities lol.

Does 1080p 120fps have crop too? If yes, then is it same as 4k 120fps?

Is there a crop in 4K 50/60. Plus is the 10-20 f4 equal to a F6 on full frame.

Out of curiosity, what did you have the FX30 mounted to for this? I assume you weren’t using the handle because that would be ergonomically weird. I think this is a great camera & I’m looking to buy in 2023 Q1 & I’m already thinking about accessories. 😆

As a Sony FS7 owner the FX30 is *EXACTLY* what I want to see for a B Cam! So I don't need to change over all my lenses away from Super 35

I was looking to upgrade from my A7III to the FX3 but now this came out. What should I get now??

I keep wanting to get an FX3 as an upgrade from an A6400, this FX30 might just be the step I need to make the move. I do mostly indoor stuff so the low light part makes me sad but otherwise it seems pretty darn cool.

Definitely very interested in the FX30. The FX3 is just way out of my price range and I've wanted a dedicated video camera to go along with my A7C which I use as a hybrid camera. The crop is actually good for me as I'm also a hobbyist wildlife shooter so the crop is great for that. Very impressed Sony! Time to save up!

I heard in another review the FX30 doesn't have burst mode. So keep that in mind if you really want to shoot wildlife :)

I'm using an A7C as well for travel videos and my channel. I would consider the FX30 for the occasional wildlife stuff as well, and my wildlife stuff is usually video. I would have to be able to do everything with one camera, otherwise I'm carrying both. I do kind of need built in interval shooting, because I do a ton of time-lapse work for my videos. I'd hate to have to rely on an external intervalometer. I'd love for someone to let us in on if it has interval shooting. Ok, the FX3 has interval shooting, so guessing this will too.

You mentioned a "bleeding" of the light on the FX30. Could you point that out? I didn't see anything unusual when you zoomed in at 6:34. Nothing noticeable. Just curious.

I'm shooting video on a Sony NEX VG20 (apsc e mount video camera) and want to move into the modern era. I've held off on the A6600 and this will do nicely. I want to keep my lenses and keep the cost/weight down. If you already have them and they work for you...just something to think about. Cheers!

As far as stability you can have a zve10 and run you footage through catalyze. The stabilization in the Sony cameras struggle a little anyway.

depends, are you shooting slowmotion? what about photography? A7c is a great all in one cam. is shoots 4k video up to 30fps. so it really comes down to if you need super slow mo or not

I quite noticed that FX30's footage has more grain (not that visible tho) compared to FX3's in same condition/type of shooting, also FX3's recorded the black better. Maybe because it's technically apsc vs FF, idk.

this would be good for someone podcasting that wants a bit more quality and audio with the handle device.

Think about your lenses... the APC is the thing here! Also the cards cost, backup HD disks etc.
