Back in the summer of 1981, only 18 at the time, I bought a Sony C7 Betamax, that machine cost me £715, which would be around £2500 to £3000 today. Back then nothing was close to the picture quality of the recordings, and believe or not one of the first home VCR's to have colour picture search and slow motion playback, by the time the C9 with (HiFi Stereo) came out some 3 or 4 years later, getting rental films in Beta was quite difficult, so I didn't see the point in upgrading to the new model. Around 1987/88 the C7 finally gave up and was replaced be a VHS Panasonic. However, I still felt even after all that time and improvements to the VHS system the original C7 offered better picture quality recordings. Thanks for this insight into the world of build quality video tape recorders rarely seen....

The C7 was advanced for its day, if a little unreliable. That is due to get a mention in the KZread video that I will release later this week as it happens. The C9 though didn't have hi-fi stereo, only lousy linear stereo, so it wouldn't have been worth the upgrade to that anyway. Few Beta HiFi machines sold in the UK had trick functions like the C9 or (to a more limited level) the C7.

I used to use this model on a daily basis as an online editor and VT op. These cost around £25K back in the day. I remember when these things were introduced in the early 90s. I think it was '94 when I first used this machine. Before that I was operating D1, D2 and D3 for BBC destined work and later D5, HDCAM, HDCAM SR and Ampex DCT. I also worked with Umatic, Beta SP, 1"C, 1"B, DASH and Ampex 2" Quad. All good fun.

I used to work with these machines on a daily basis once. There were so many options and keys that I created an interactive user manual with Filemaker Pro on the Mac for educational purposes. ALL buttons, in and outputs were explained as well as the menu's. You could lookup on keyword and it would tell you what menu item you needed to go to and what the available options were. Pressing a button would have the same visual effect as pressing it on the real machine. Great fun to create, but it gave my RSI... Too many and too long days creating that I guess. Not a lot was known at that time around RSI and the cause. P.S. I would get rid of the head sponge if I were you. It only increases wear on the heads and if the heads are dirty, you can clean them with some smooth chamois leather and alcohol. (not up and down, only in the direction of tape travel!)

If you find the flashing STOP key light annoying, you can turn the flashing off with a menu setting. From what I remember it flashes the green STOP key when the machine senses the absence of external sync, which is immaterial on a standalone player anyway.

Great video. On the DVW machines, if you hold the ENTRY button whilst pressing the MENU button, it will bring up an error log on your monitor with time code stamps of each error. Handy for checking playback or record issues. One other thing, and I’ve noticed this on a few of your machines. If the STOP light is flashing it means your machine does not have a reference signal connected on the back (usually just a black burst signal). If you switch to INT ref (switch) it will stop flashing.

Also, to clear the error log (I would usually clear it each time I either record or playback), call up the error log (ENTRY + MENU) and then hit the RESET button alongside the TimeCode display on the machine panel. Enjoy!

In my collection I have a DVW-A500P recorder and a DVW-A510P player, both the rebranded Thomson versions. The recorder I got for 56€, the player for 38€. One can spend great amounts of money on these on Ebay, but with patience, these machines can be gotten for very cheap or even for free like in this video :) Unfortunately I so far haven't had the time to do much with my Digibetas, but this video will be very helpful when I finally have the time. The menu system really seems very unintuitive... The cables for the 9P remote interface are available on Ebay, I got one to connect my Digibetas together. It's quite fascinating how they work together, basic editing operations can be performed via the front panel of the recorder. A friend of mine has a small collection of Betacam equipment too, and he actually prefers the video quality of Betacam SP. Digital Betacam does employ 4:2:2 colour subsampling, and the thereby reduced colour quality apparently is noticeable when compared to analog Betacam SP.

I've been reliably informed that BetacamSP is nowhere near as good as Digital Betacam. But I know what you mean. There's something very pleasing about the BetacamSP image, even though the resolution isn't especially high. I would say you got your machines very cheap. These things do often still fetch about £200. A freebie of course is even better, but mine really needs a pinch roller.

Composite input was important back in those days, the huge work was just about to begin to digitize old 2" and 1" videotapes. And they sure were composite formats! Also in many studios digibetas went straight in to replacing 1" machines, all cameras, visionmixers and everything in studio was built in composite.

The DVW series of machines are such good machines. I use them at work almost every day, our DVW-A500 has around 15,000 hours on the heads and it is just fine. We also have a DVW-A500 P for PAL work and an MSW-M2000 for NTSC or PAL depending on the menu setting (and sync fed in) along with one lone Ampex CVR-60P (Sony BVW-60P) for the really tough PAL tapes. We also have the record inhibit permanently enabled on every machine that it can be In the States, I very rarely see a 500 series machine that does not have the composite in option, as these and the SX cousins the DNW series were meant to drop right in place of an SP or oxide Betacam deck, and although they are all component formats, most edit suites and especially remote (OB) trucks at local TV stations were composite video.

@@video99couk All the DVWA500P's & DVW500P's had a composite input connector, but, not all had the associated DEC-65 board that performed the processing. This was an option. S-Video was never considered for DigiBeta because it wasn't a Broadcast Standard, and the DVW's won't accept non-TBC'd signals. Back in those days, most VCR's that had S-Video out didn't have a built in TBC.

@@azmath2059 Yet the UVW1800P and similar BetacamSP decks do have S-Video connectors. Yes, I was aware that the Composite Video input socket is always fitted, even though the option board often (usually?) isn't. So if you wanted to source some material from say a Sony EV-S9000E Hi8 with TBC, you had to use Composite.

I was sent to Sony's service training classes for Betacam SP, Betacam SP camcorder, Digi Beta, XDCAM, and HDCAM camcorder. I always learned a lot which wasn't in the service manual. Do you know about the hidden menus in the BVW-75? The only feature I remember is that it could enable loop play or record. That is very dangerous so it was well hidden. I'm only partway through the video so you may have discovered the source of your black debris contamination - but it's not tape-related - it's the insulation sponge from the top cover deteriorating and raining down into the gubbins. I've had that problem with that type of sponge breaking down like that before in other contexts (typically travel cases padded with the same type of material.) I removed all traces of it from my top cover and wherever it littered the floor of the tape mech.

Actually timecode is just an analog 2400/1200hz signal representing time down to the frame. It should be normally locked to tape vertical sync. Genlocking is done via the EXT REFERENCE input or can use INPUT VIDEO as well. This is for locking the internal TBC to your house sync so the VTR can be mixed with other synchronous sources. The timecode is what the edit system uses to know which frame is which.

Sony sold NTSC and PAL versions of this machine, need the opposite standard, well just buy two machines! But these machines could be fairly easily modified to dual standard 525/625. All that needed to be done was to change the master VCO on the internal sync generator. The beauty of an all digital servo system and digital signal processing - it was frequency agnostic. A small shop in Hollywood made a fortune in selling this switchable dual standard modification. Sony had a fit and went so far as to modify the sync generator section to where this unauthorized upgrade was not possible on later serial numbers.

I always keep the record inhibit switch turned on with my machines unless I’m planning to actually record on a tape. On most Sony machines the record inhibit indicator is different for a protected tape or an inhibited machine; from memory I think it’s steady for one and flashes for the other. Most broadcast grade recorders and certain other devices such as the Sony component colour corrector, will have reference video connections. There should be a pair of BNC sockets with a passive loop through between them, and a 75 Ohm termination switch, as with a composite video input. It’s basically a timing and phase reference between multiple machines.

Have you tried drilling holes on a Betacam SP tape so the player will recognize it as Digital Betacam? I'm sure it'll work and record fine. Just like VHS and SVHS.

I suspect it would work badly. An experiment for another day. There were yellow BetacamSX tapes which were used on compatible digital SX machines, and these were effectively BetacamSP tapes in a different shell. The SX machines could record digitally on BetacamSP tapes too.

@Matt Quinn That is correct, SP tape has a very different tape formulation and is also microscopically different to DigiBeta. You cannot use SP tape on a DigiBeta machine. I experimented with this back in the late 90's when DigiBeta VCR's first came out.

The best thing about discovering this upload is, that I had the pleasure to subscribe to a whole new channel with hopefully a ton of videos. So...you're hoarding videos ? :D You're most certainly several steps ahead I'd say. I'm nowhere near the joys you're having. But.....Just received two JVC first generation HR-S5000EH S-VHS machines today, so I'm up to six of them. Four Danish/Scandiavian machines and two German. This time around, almost 35 years after introduction, they're all faulty and need special care, but I hope to end up with two fully working Danish machines and a lot of spareparts. And on a personal note. Never expect the next generation to catch the awe and admiration. They haven't lived through the developments or haven't experienced how cool it was, that you could record living pictures on a tape. They haven't experienced how expensive videotapes were either. They're used to that everything works at the tip of their fingers. Funny world. Cheers. Hope you've installed the new pinch roller.

@@video99couk Such a coincidence. I've just watched it, seconds ago. Then I may have a trick. Just tell the next generation there's money buried in it. There really is, because once repaired/refurbished and working....and counting 15-25 years from now, we will be in a world where there's more working Edison Home Phonographs from 1880-1918 around, than working televisions or videotaperecorders from 1950-1999. I have the same bacille, but not the space to grab what ever come my way. I was once given a Sony 1" C-format BVH-1000 and a bunch of reel tapes, sometime almost a decade ago. I had plans with it, but it stole half a Kilowatt and sounded like an airport taking off. It was beautiful, but was given away in the same spirit as received. A faulty Hi8 Sony pro-broadcast model sat in a closet and was given away. The same with two Philips VCR's N1700 and N1702. The sad thing about all this is, that I handed them out before having the guts to learn to dive into the electronics and mechanics, finding service manuals and before I bought equipment. Tektronix 1725 WFM and 1735 Vector combo, Tektronix 1411 with all options and a WM700A should be coming soon. But never mind. I've settled my mind on the first generation JVC HR-S5000EH consumer S-VHS and with my limited amount of energy that might be enough. I hope to repair and refurbish and on top of that, to electronically align two machines to record better on Fuji H471S tape, than the factory set would have done. It's a theory as of now, but let's see. Do you have any experiences in aligning the recording amplifier for a specific tape in this manner ? I think it's the upper sideband I'm glaring at and putting a strong FM-signal (luminance) onto the tape before saturation sets in. Never mind.....I've just discovered your channel. Let me enjoy more of your uploads. There has to be a lot I've missed out on. Cheers mate. Kind regards from Denmark, Scandinvia

@@DK640OBrianYT I've not got involved in aligning head amplifiers. I'm aware that at playback, the frequency response of a machine can alter how bad "tails" appear from bright whites on poor / faded / worn tapes. For example, Sony Beta machines usually give better pictures than Sanyo, but super-poor tapes will often give a better result on a Sanyo due to different amplifier responses.

Great video as always. Maybe you can help me with something, I have started doing transfers and I have several low hour and well cared for Panasonic AG-7350/AG-7650/AG-7750 decks yet 'the internet' says these are absolutely 'garbage' players and despite what I had assumed 'very good' characteristics one self-professed internet famous group have declared this equipment as totally unsuitable for transfers. Am I wrong here, are these machines such awful players? Given their pedigree I thought they might have been at least acceptable?

  • @video99couk

I believe the AG-7750 has a TBC so it's going to be a pretty good deck for this kind of work. However in my humble experience, this range of machines suffer from head wear, so you need to be sure the heads are in good condition. They don't have digital tracking so you can get into a mess with the picture tracking and hi-fi audio tracking not being well co-located, so the risk of caption buzz on the hi-fi track. (How digital tracking overcomes this I've never quite understood, but somehow it seems to). Personally I tend to use later machines such as the AG-4700, but I would have no problem running tapes with the AG-7750 in particular.

@Matt Quinn I won't name the forum or the characters but it's very cultish around one machine, which just happens to be the one the 'leader of the gang' uses... I have had some posts telling me that these decks were built solely for recording and that the AG-7650 especially is absolute junk, funny that seeing as its not even a recorder... Ho hum. It's amazing the views you find in small communities repeated as fact when one forum _celebrity_ supports them. Anyway great channel Colin.

I have had 4 x AG-7650s over the last 17 years and when they worked they were fabulous, but they a habit of dying quite quickly, even at relatively low hours. Smaller prosumer machines were far more reliable. Without tempting fate some numbers in the Panasonic NV-HS range in the upper 900s can last a very long time, but it is mostly down to luck. Oh the issue I had more often than not with the massive Panasonics was an audio channel going bang. In the end the joy of their quality was outweighed by their fragility so I gave up on them

@Matt Quinn Yes, absolutely right. I had a great deal of experience with these back in the early 2,000's and they were incredibly good machines. The picture quality in SVHS was second to none provided we used Fuji SVHS tape. They were also very reliable and easy to work on.
