Enjoy the story telling a lot better than just watching screws being manipulated with dead air in the background. I had my grandpa and his TV shop to learn from, that is what got me started. Got an all tube 23" GE color TV still sitting downstairs in my parents basement, it is a KE chassis if that means anything. I replaced the flyback in that one in 1972 when I was still in high school, my first major repair on my own.

Nice technical stories. I imagine the frustration you had when you got fired because you do what was supposed a technician should do. Lots of people in management positions have bad attitudes. It's like the army, but with coccaine. We gonna fire all of them, as time passes, less people watches their content on broadcast. Yours is more interesting and educational. Thanks for sharing!

This a very good video on fixing common problem with Sony camcorder tape door not closing. There is always some kind of switch that activate the motorized mechanism to load the tape, but it is not easily found. I have a similar problem with one of my vintage Sony 8mm camcorder and the door would close but it would reopen back up again without retracting the tape loader. I think it could be similar switch problem like this camcorder. It is also an interesting life story on how you got into this business in the first place. I do have a couple of questions for you since you used to be the VCR repairman. I have a Sony VHS tape player and it would turn on but when I press play, it does make some noise and stay on but displaying error code E3 01 05. I have not taken it apart but I suspect that the tape transport stop working, probably a bad belt but not sure. I hope you can give me some hint on where to look. The other question I have it if you can show how to align the tape transport adjustment so the VCR does not eat the edge of the tape, that would be great.

Well done, the owner would be chuffed with the camcorder :-D I imagine that bill was very happy with your repairs, yes it did sound like he was testing you :-D He must have been a decent enough boss as you were there for a hell of a long time. You were a fresh/sharp and logical person, i bet you repaired a hell of a lot of devices in that place. I wonder if the beckman had the odd A to D chip that was not soldered to the board, it was pressed down on to the pcb via a frame. (crappy way). I'm supprised they worked at all!. That would have been an expensive tool in it's day.

Good boss? Hahahahahahaha. Hahahahahaha hahahahahaha! I will say no comment on that one. It was a toxic work environment. The only reason I put up with the crap as long as I did was because i was paid well compared to what other shops were offering. (I did look around and the best offer on the table was about 26,000 less a year and i would have had a 2 hour commute every day.) So I put up with the bullshit for years till one day i didn't put up with it and walked. 20 years and i got 0 severence. Constructive dismissal is what they call it. Owner made it so toxic that I left. He wouldn't fire me but he put me on piecework and then started sending everything out so that there would be no work and i was sitting around with nothing to do. Told me to my face that he was going to starve me into quitting and that is what he did.

For me the big issue with these is that all of the ones after around the year 2000 have really low pixel count CCDs, lower even than the resolution of an SD frame. As far as I can tell the last one with a good CCD in the consumer Hi-8 line is the CCD-TRV87E here in Europe, but the CCD-TRV87 (NTSC version) has a CCD with quite a bit less pixels.

Hi @12voltvids, Have you worked on similar issues with MiniDV- and MicroMV cameras from Sony? I have a couple of each with the same issue. Is the mechanism basically the same but just shrunk down? So far I´ve been using a trick I found online by applying power directly to the motor, but it´s just an emergency solution for getting the mechanism to close so you can put it away, not something you can put to daily use.

I watched since I do my own repair work and I have a TRV-43, a top loader. I was rather disappointed to see that the TRV-138 used a different loading mechanism, therefore not relevant to my needs. I am really surprised that you were in the consumer electronics repair business that long. With the change from vacuum tubes to solid state in the 1960s, the writing was on the wall. In Southern California at that time with only 500 televisions per repair shop, it was already time to look for a more profitable business. Every grocery and drug store had installed tube checkers, further diminishing the number of available repair jobs. Television had taken over, and there was less demand for radio repair. Reliability improved when you no longer had to deal with burned out, or worn out tubes. As time went on, the amount the customer had to pay in order for the repair shop to make money went up so much that electronic equipment was cheaper to replace than repair.

When the average wage was 40,000 a year here i was pulling in about 70,000 which incidentally is about what a journeyman electrician makes today. My brother brought home some non-working smaller guitar and bass amps. The bass one is an Ibanez, 35w. Speaker and cable to it test ok. Unit powers on, but at full wide open volume/gain and in any postions too, there is not a peep of any type of sound to the speaker. Not noise. Not signal. Literally as if not attached at all. Is going straight to the IC 3 leg components attached to heat sink to resolder a good idea? I guess what I am asking, is it possible or even probable that this is the culprit? Anything else stands out that might do this? I like your stories about getting into the business etc.. heh heh.

I figured out that definitely without doubt that some component is shorted that should not be. Internally, there is a fuse. It was blown at initial inspection (meaning, I got it like this.) When I jumped it and powered on, it blew the main fuse in the 120v socket itself. I tested many resistors and they are all fine so far. The components and board seem pristine other than the problem. I am thinking it is one of the IC chips just on the board (no heat sink.) There are 3 of them. Visually, everything is perfect. I even used magnifying glass and resoldered the 2 points that I thought MAYBE suspect. I did not create a short. :) So, I dunno. haha

I found a diode that passed electricity in both directions. There are about 15 of them on the board. One of them is faulty. It is not part of the bridge rectifier (obviously, as per my first comment.) When up to it, I will take one from a donor board I have kept just for this purpose. Then, I have to get some fuses too. So, we shall see.

God I have like 70 Handycams. Most of them work just fine, every once in awhile I bump into this problem, such as the IP5 I got the other day. Came with a tape stuck in it which is cool because I didn't have a MMV tape for my other one. But now it won't close. At least got one working one, and will keep it for myself. I need to get around to selling all my Hi8 ones though. What amazes me is how reliable Handycams are to this day, yet any Video8 or Hi8 VCR that Sony made in the 90's has bad caps and you have about a 90% chance of them not working.

Sony seemed like they had to keep their cables proprietary to them. I remember having to modify the pinouts on VGA cables so they would work on the Sony Trinitron 13" computer monitors which were superior to the NEC dot matrix monitors at that time. Used to get a lot of used computer gear on the cheap to play with from the Boeing surplus store here in the Seattle area in Kent WA.

That story at the TV station would not have happened in the UK... I am aware of at least one strike, that took one of the ITV companies off the air completely in the early '80s for a day for a very similar story of a wet-behind-the-ears tech who fixed a telecine machine without authorisation, and was reprimanded - not fired - by management. The union went nuts. It was ironic as it was a union rule that prevented the guy from doing this in the first place. The ITV regions weren't small companies either - this one had a turnover of £50m at the time.

It's funny because the cable installer guys were IBEW, but the office staff and the community tv side was non-union and mostly volunteer. There were 4 staffers and the rest were volunteers. The engineers were actually part of the commercial production side of the business which was a completely different company owned by the same owners and shared the same studio space as a community TV side. It was a family-run business and just like the TV shop that I worked at for 20 years family run businesses a lot of times been the rules a little.

Yes this was right at the end of the analog cameras and the capacitor problem had been resolved by this point. It was really bad on the mid 80s and into early 90s. This one would have been around 2005 I think. They could still fail for sure but they weren't a problem like the old ones.

@@Sans_Solo_ They did that too in older models. Best ones loaded from top and had a cover that closed over to keep dirt out. The problem with this one is people forgot to take the tripod quick mount off and opened the cover, which starts the unload and bent the shit out of the slider chassis. Canon did the same thing and those ones were around when I was in the business and you should have seen how mad people were when they ruined their camcorder. Usually it was some family member that inadvertently tried to change the tape without removing the mount. Many were damaged beyond repair. Of course they didn't find this out initially, because it would bend then reverse and they would take the mount off and open again and change the tape. But because it was bent the guides wouldn't load correctly and then all their tapes were recorded out of spec and they didn't find out till they went to play a tape and it wouldn't play. By this time they had recorded many tapes and found that none of them would play and nobody could recover the video because it wasnt recorded correctly. This caused more than a few people to blow their stacks and take out out of me or anyone else that was telling them that their camera aws shot and all their recordings lost.
