    What I’ve learned from watching so many photographer’s videos on cameras & lenses, is that most are primarily KZreadrs, not necessarily photographers. You are exactly the opposite. You actually use the gear and not just talk about it. Your explanations for why you choose a particular lens or use a specific F-stop is really insightful and comes from that experience. The images from this 35GM is really impressive and it is going to be an important tool for many. Thanks again for another great video.

    Thanks for that feedback - I see myself as primarily a photographer and educator and not a gear reviewer. I have been recommended to watch certain videos that don’t show any photos and I end up scratching my head.

    @@AlphaCreativeSkills agreed, these days there are a lot of videos on KZread where reviewers give their thoughts, opinions of new gear based on fact sheets they found on the internet, without them even having the actual gear in their hands. Loads of rubbish! It’s my life mission to give them a thumbs down whenever I came across such video!

    One can see that you are not only a photographer but also an educator when you explain the details on how you get a softer background by having the background slightly tilted to the back, not flat in front of the camera. Great tips, thanks for making me think about such things when I'm taking pictures! :)

    Another great review and loved your street photography. I wish this lens was available a couple of months ago as I purchased the Sigma f1.2, a beautiful lens but as you note, huge. I wanted a g master and didn’t like the Sony/Zeiss, again for the reasons you’ve mentioned plus the coma issues for someone who does a lot of night Astro photography. Glad to see they’ve retained the focus hold button, too. In time I’ll likely sell the Sigma and move to this lens. Thanks again.

Thank you so very much for your work, Sony is lucky to have you. They really should consider paying you ! I was all set on the 70-200 GM and then you had me sold on the 100-400, but then I watched your insight on the 135 GM and was leaning towards that, and now I’m thinking I need a 35 GM... I use as many primes as possible and have turned my back on the ‘holy trinity’ of zooms (16-35, 24-70 and 70-200). I still use the telephoto zooms such as the 100-400 GM. I have basically gone back to my roots as I started with a handful of primes back in 1980.

    Great captures! I believe the decision between 24 & 35 G Masters depends on how much you want to emphasis surroundings. The 24 is better when you almost equally want to emphasis the surroundings and the subject. And the 35 is better when you prioritise the subject over surroundings.

    Thanks Mark for these awesome samples, and you're using A7C with it! I've been thinking of getting the combo myself, IMO the best bang for the buck for full frame systems from Sony. The pictures simply look razor sharp and sometimes unreal due to its sharpness when viewed in 4K.

  • @AlphaCreativeSkills

    @AlphaCreativeSkills

    Жыл бұрын

    The A7C is an excellent sensor. You can complain about the finder size and resolution but not the dynamic range and high ISO performance of the sensor. If 4K images are the outcome there is no need to crop tightly in post and you are using the Monitor most of the time the camera is great (small, compact and affordable). I hope to see an A7CII in 2023 as the option to shoot more often in APS-C mode using a 33 megapixel sensor would be one reason I would possibly want to trade up.

  • @AlphaCreativeSkills

    It will depend on the shoot I have planned. The 35mm ZA tended to get taken everywhere because it was small enough to be a 'just-in-case' lens and great for Street when stopping down was the way to go (it's small and discreet). My personal style for Street and Journalism/Editorial has been changing over the years and I have been favouring shooting wide open rather than shooting with the 'Sunny 16' or 'f/8 and be there' rules - which are the more traditional approaches to Street.

    The 50mm F/1.2 is a little on the hefty side (feels a little like an 85mm f/1.4) but will still fit comfortably in my small messenger bag with two other primes. I use the 2.8/135 Batis with the A7C (in preference to the heavier 135 f/1.8 GM) so the 50 1.2 is not dissimilar in size to the Batis. I figure if I am prepared to work with the Batis on the A7C then the 50 1.2 will be no different. It is usually my left hand supporting the weight of the combined camera lens so the package still feels manageable (at the upper reaches I what a compact system should be).

    @@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you Mark, that’s very helpful indeed and thanks for taking the time to answer my question personally and so quickly. I’ve been trying to downsize all my gear to the bare minimum of what I actually need. So that has involved me selling a bunch of stuff over the last year. I’m primarily a Leica M user but my eyes aren’t what they used to be for RF work plus I really feel that, that technology has finally run it’s course in todays world of EVF’s and focus peaking. I’ve had the A1 a couple of times and while I honestly believe it’s the worlds most advanced and in some ways …best photographic tool, the A7C with its RF-like footprint really appeals to me. I will probably end up with an A1 again once I can emotionally detach from the photographic tool having to look like a classic camera 📷 but until then the A7C will suffice nicely. I really feel it’s an exceptional tool. Very much underrated. Btw my name is Seal (as in the musician). I did some work in your country a few years back on a tv show called ‘The Voice’. The 35mm angle of view means that you are working quite close and/or you want to get the whole pet in the frame and not just the head. Who working very close with a 35mm to get a head and shoulders shot you will get some perspective distortion with a 35mm lens, i.e. the nose of a dog will look proportionally bigger than the eyes.

    A word of warning, at least to those watching in the UK. When I first watched this video, a lot of the comments on sharpness (e.g. “the eyelashes are absolutely razor sharp”) simply didn’t tie up with what I was seeing on my 27 inch screen. On pressing the settings (cogwheel) button showing in the top RH corner of the video, I found that “Quality” was set at 400p. I reset this to 2160p, and then everything in the video that should have been sharp now was. I then remembered reading that KZread had agreed to lower default video speeds settings, in order to help maintain broadband capacity to meet the extra demands arising from people working from home.

Sometimes I spend 20 minutes removing the hoods in Photoshop but I also figure that most people can see where the lens ends and the hood begins - and this should be Sigma's job and not mine. It was not intended to be part of some conspiracy theory - just Sigma being a little lazy supplying product images to reviewers and website who showcase their products.

The 24mm in crop mode does equal about 36mm, but the bokeh is going to appear more like an~F/2.0 as opposed to the F/1.4 bokeh that you would get from shooting with the 35mm 1.4. Essentially the longer the focal length, the more the bokeh effect is applied. I believe Jason Vong’s video on the 35mm has a side by side with both the 24mm and 35mm at 1.4 that you can clearly see how this looks. Hope that helps.
