Sony a6700 Canon R7 Bird Photography 200-600 & 100-500 Lenses! Birds In Flight

Heather and I visited several locations to do bird photography. I used the Sony a6700 with their 200-600 lens. Heather used the Canon EOS R7 and their 100-500 lens. First, we went to a location on Lookout Mountain, then we visited the Chickamauga Dam, upper and lower areas before briefly stopping at an area in our own subdivision. It was a tough day but in the end, we were able to photograph many species including White-eyed Verio, Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Double-crested Cormorant, Red-tailed Hawk, and Northern Mockingbird.

    Thank you! Opinions certainly vary on that second card slot. Some people say it’s a must have, and other folks, like me, never even put a card in it during the life of the camera. I would say if you value a second card slot that much then the a6700 is not for you.

    In 25 years I’ve never had a card failure. Shooting multiple brands. If I’m shooting for myself I don’t much worry about it. I have cameras with dual card slots. But, most of the time it only has one card. If I was shoot weddings, once in a life time events that someone was paying for. Then yes, my main camera would have dual card slots.

    Wow so amazing photos as always. I have the same setup and I struggle to get such a sharp photos as you do. Medium, far distance birds, birds in flight for example. I have high enough shutter speed (1250 sometimes 1600, 2000), ISO sometimes around 200 to 4000. My shots at the end of the day looks soft in most cases. Probably atmosphere, haze ? Dont know. Or maybe lack of experience. Will keep shooting... own the lens like 16 days, as a photographer I have still much to learn. 9M experience :D

    Hi, great shots! What about ISO performance of Sony compared the R7. And what about rolling shutter?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    11 ай бұрын

    ISO performance is about the same, the Sony is a little bit better with rolling shutter. All of the photos in this video were done with electronic shutter from both cameras so for large birds in flight, there’s not really any problem, hummingbirds, though you need to switch to mechanical on both cameras.

    I’m really liking the Sony a6700 over the Canon R7. The autofocus is far superior and I’m getting a much, much larger keeper rate with the Sony a6700. My Canon R7 just doesn’t seem to know what to focus on even if I tell it where to focus. I’ve made the adjustments that Duane Paton suggested, but the camera is still confused. The Sony a6700 immediately grabs focus on the bird, where ever it is.

    As always, your photos are lovely, and I eagerly anticipate each new video. Thanks for sharing. From your settings, I see you often shoot at full zoom and wide open aperture. With a long telephoto, this can lead to a razor-thin depth of field. Do you lose many shots to blurry focus?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    11 ай бұрын

    @@wellingtoncrescent2480 Thank you! That's the nice thing about these cheaper telephoto lenses, even wide-open they are stopped down when compared to the exotic and ultra-expensive 600 f/4 primes. But you are right, the depth of field is still very thin even at 6.3 or 7.1, and because of that it is critical to bag perfect focus. So to answer your question. Yes, I do lose many shots due to blurry focus. Shoot many, share few is my philosophy.

  • @PhilThach
