It is quite unfortunate, but it is clear that the Sony was improperly setup for the majority of the comparisons, making it “seen” like it isn’t as good to those who are novices. Shots are under-exposed or using the wrong metering mode or worse. Please exercise more diligence in presenting far and equitable comparisons. Viewers should take the results of this comparison with a grain of salt at best.

Thank you for this comparison. As a Sony a6400 owner and non-professional user I am very disappointed by that camera. Awful and clunky controls and complicated menus, tiny battery, non existent image stabilization (optical steady shot lens) and "ok" images (not using auto). Capturing fast moving animals was almost never possible even though the autofocus is world class. I tried using SLOG2 and post processing but always had tons of grain in dark spots no matter the settings. This is when I give up. I tried getting the most out of this camera for a year and apart from a few nice photos, I also got plenty of negative remarks from people who felt almost harrased by the sheer presence of that "big" camera. Getting a "real" camera is only worth it if you want to spend a lot of time in post processing. This is my personal opinion and I will probably find no one to agree with me. But for the casual user, I find this cam too big, clunky and way too expensive for what it delivers. I found a lot of your comparison shots much more pleasent looking with the iPhone. Especially the walking scenes with the steady camera.

You have to understand it’s more about the lens than it is about the body. You probably bought a kit with a kit zoomlens which are always crap. Get yourself a fast lens with a large aperture and you will get great results. The Sigma 30mm 1.4 is an amazing lens and it’s cheap. Ive shot many weddings and corp films using this lens.

Very nice comparison video, it is very clear tho that the iphone has better native color, not that this is necessarily better, it looks better for the regular consumer... but it also struggles in low light situations, there's no way to escape the fact that the iphone's sensor is a fraction of Sony's, outstanding results on both sides

Standard profile on the Sony is what's making it look so weak. SLOG2 would be a different game and iPhone microcontrast was aweful

I know but most users always stick with standard profile picture so I decided to do the same here. I usually use Cine 4. I agree that the iPhones “HDR” is sometimes weird.

At first glance, the iPhone has a better dynamic range, but the Sony can do all that in post if desired. All the data to bump up the shadows and tone down the highlights is there, but iPhone does it in camera. For most users this is far more convenient ofcourse. But try a lowlight comparison and see how the iPhone holds up against the a6500 with a fast lens such as the Sony 15mm 1.4 G. iPhone wins hands down at video stabilisation btw, the inbody stabilisation of the a6500 doesn’t even compare.

Yes, that’s why I included the walking scenes. Even though the a6500 has an internal stabilizer it has no chance against the digital one of the iPhone.

I know and I usually use Cine 4 and color grade further in Premiere Pro. But once I start to tweak around in post it’s not a fair comparison anymore. Plus, the majority of the users will never get into these advanced functions.

Sony is much better. The iPhone 12 Pro turns details to mush while trying agressively to maintain high dynamic range and reduce noise. Too much processing - looks awkward. Look at the guys shirt @ 0:18 - see the girls shirt and hair @ 2:00 - see the bush on the left @ 1:27 - Look at the artifacts around the street lamp at the bottom of the screen @ 2:26. Look at the stutter in the pan at 2:13. (Compare each to the Sony). Secondly this is no where near what the a6500 can produce but is a good representation of what the iPhone 12 is. BTW I have both. The a6400 with HLG which is even cheaper than the a6500 - will also surprise you.
