Sony A6500 UNDERWATER Housing Unbox, Review, Test

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Sea Frogs Salted Line underwater housing for the Sony A6500 and a6**** series cameras. This housing is a great budget option for me as I am investing in a nice underwater video and photo rig. This video is not sponsored by Seafrogs, I just want to share my experience with you.

    I have been using this housing with a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens for canon and a metabones adapter. it focuses reasonably quickly and produces very sharp images. The lens and adapter easily fit in the dome port but you won't be able to zoom. Just select 12mm and move in closer. With two 8 inch arms each side carrying dual Iron strobes the whole unit is neutral to slightly negative underwater. I also use an Ikelite housing which is so much better but a fair bit heavier. I use the Sea Frogs for travelling when weight limits are an issue. Best thing about the Ikelite housing is being able to use electrical flash sync instead of optical which will heat the housing and cause internal condensation in some temperatures particularly if doing rapidi fire flash photography. You can avoid this to some extent by using moisture absorbers in the housing.

    Hey Joe, the dome ports works by generating an "in air virtual image" which offsets the usual refraction you gen from the water. I got this from "learning surf photography" on youtube but the lens might try to focus on this "virtual image" which is inches from the lens and confuse the focusing system. They actually started selling a flat port for this reason. The lens will work above the surface, but under underwater are better suited to short focal lengths 8-30 mm were the depth of field is deep....I'm actually look at the housing for my old A6000 for freediving and surf. Do you have any videos where you compare the footage with your GoPro?

    Oh good to know, finally somebody had the answer, thanks. Yes I have some footage filmed with both the a6500 and gopro 7 simultaneously. I will have to edit it side by side for comparison. I had the gopro mounted on the cold shoe on the a6500 housing on the Voici Bernadette wreck dive. Check out that video on my channel, some clips are gopro and some are 6500, hard to tell which is which.

    I just recently picked one of these kits up for my GH5, I am extremely careful with gear and I know when you are out in the elements stuff can happen but I keep my dome covered when not in use and I wiped it with microfiber cloth and even that looks to have left minor scratches/ streaks ... doesn’t appear to effect image yet but I don’t like that it has them (only visible when angled certain way in light) have you seen anything like this with yours? Thanks!

    i had the same results! (i think) the problem is the min focus distance. above water its already 90 cm so underwater its even more. now i only use the sigma 16mm or the 30mm macro. they seem to work realy good.

  • @JoeOceanside

    @JoeOceanside

    Oh, good to know. Yeah the 16mm should be a good all around focal length anyway. I have a 35mm sony lens but I think its not wide enough for taking pics and vids of wrecks, but I will try sometime.

    With a dome port uw you are focusing on a virtual image inches away from the lens. For wide lenses it's often no problem...but most lenses will require a +3 diopter to focus uw.

    Hey great info guys! can I ask you one more thing... This issue drives me nuts, I have 18-135 Sony lens same internal specs as in this video.... and as i researched diopter is a must? i guess, no focus in dome port sadly. What im not sure about is +3 diopter are you sure? +1 will not be enough? also I know this diopter thing is used for macro and dont know will i get normal zooms and focus on further subjects underwater or i will be limited to macro photography with 6 inch dome underwater? They Key here as i deep researched this was... 6 inch dome gives virtual image at 12 inches (30cm) (2x) but these lenses can only focus at minimum of 17.7 inches (45cm) thats why Sigma 16mm in this video worked, it has 25cm of minimum focus distance... I actually merged half the case in water and moved out the camera about 10cm back and then it did focus :/ how are the selling this i dont understand... one solution i think is to modify the dome... get a 9 inch glass dome upgrade somehow seems like only solution for perfect quality.

    I have to ask, were the shots of your hands (Gauge Shots) GoPro. The video is great and deep, but I was wondering if the GoPro footage would survive a red filter or correction. The GoPro is more practical for free diving and just fun at the beach but the blown highlights and smaller sensor might suffer during color correction. You know how it is when you're about to pull the trigger. Do you wait until Sept for the next GoPro model (sale or improvement) or pool the trigger? I really appreciate the time you put into your video. Have a good weekend.

    I think those clips were GoPro, I do not use any red filters I have never had good results with them. I just do a little color correction in premiere. Thanks for the video Joe, it's really helpful. I scuba dive a lot and would like to up my photography game. At the moment I only only use my Gopro Hero 7 for underwater video but I'd like to get more into photography and as we all know, Gopro is not the best for that. I use my A6000 for travel and landscape photography so I think I'll start using this housing to bring my camera underwater. The question I have is around the lenses to use to get a nice wide FOV when taking pictures, since the A6000 has a cropped lens, do you think a 16mm is enough and do I need the Dome to use that lens? Thanks!

  • @JoeOceanside

    @JoeOceanside

    Hi Edwin, thanks for watching. I believe yes, for the sigma 16 you will need a dome port. The flat port that comes with the camera is small and will only fit a kit lens and a few other smaller sized lenses. On seafrogs website there is a chart so you can match the correct dome port for your lens.

    Hi! Sorry I am not familiar with that camera so I don't know how good it is. I would say, if I had to have only one camera for underwater video and vlogging I would go with the Gopro 8 black. It is small, light, easy to use, has AMAZING stabilization, waterproof, and it has ok audio. The cost and setup of my a6500 is so much that often time I just take the Gopro instead. Yes the image quality and bokeh are much better on the bigger camera but if you are doing this for KZread or social media people care more about the story and you as a person instead of the image quality.
