Sony a6400 Battery Life Solution

Ойын-сауық

I've recently decided that I needed a way to improve the reliability of my a6400 when it comes to its battery life. The solution I decided to go with was to use a dummy battery hooked up to one of those standard big Sony batteries.
In this video I go over the practical aspects of the setup, as well as how battery life compares between using this setup and using standard internal batteries.
Hoping this video would be helpful to anyone who is deciding on buying the a6400 or has already bought it for video work and is in need to setting and forgetting capabilities that the camera gives you with its unlimited recording but from a battery life standpoint.
Various gear used in the test:
Smallrig a6400 cage - 2310B
SMALLRIG NP-FW50 DC Coupler Dummy Battery - 2921
SMALLRIG NP-F Battery Adapter Plate - EB2504
Neewer NP-FW50
RAVPower NP-FW50
RAVPower NP-F550
DSTE NP-F970

Having had an a6000 myself I'm quite surprised that this was an issue that still persists in later models, ironically the canon D7 I used to use also seems to be battery difficient despite the bulk

Yeah, despite innovating in a lot of ways, Sony also lacks progress in some areas unfortunately :p The more expensive a6600 is the first APSC camera of their range to have a bigger battery (it uses the battery from the full frame cameras) but that is just a recycled solution really.

@@nikrotas I've been eyeballing the a7iii, but again, for the price, patience and research is paramount. But I am a sucker for a good low light high iso cameras 😏

I've had the A7iii since its launch and its been absolutely great, can recommend, I've only recently got the A7Riii for the extra bit of details through its resolution and absence of an aliasing filter. However, the A7iv is supposed to be coming out soon, I would sell my a6400 and A7iii to get it if it has the video features Im looking for :D

@@nikrotas somehow the S models seem to have better low light functionality, I'm not sure why, even though the focus is on cinematography, but then again , I'll wait and see what the iv can do

I think that low light performance is mostly if not entirely in video applications, and also depends on the two native ISOs, so the A7Siii has a second base ISO at 12800, so its extremely clean there, but just under that, not as much as the A7iii which I think has the second base ISO at 3200 or 6400, not sure which. Also, for photos, higher res is better in low light (if you edit photos), you can apply more noise reduction while keeping detail than on a lower resolution image. Gerald Undone channel makes very good comparisons on these topics :)

Hey nik which one is that 6 hour lasting one? I need 3 hours + backup, what should i do.. I need the exact 2 settings for 3hours and 6 hours, what should be the battery in camera, and what should be the one eternally connected..

Sorry for the late reply, the lack of success on this channel has made me focus on other things :p If you can plug in to USB power, a regular battery should last you around 3 hours, but if you need either portability or at least 3 hours reliably, I would suggest the option of dummy battery with NP-F590 (NP-F550 is around 3 hours battery life time, so it would work if you need more than 2 hours, but if you need at least 3, its not reliable I'd say)

if you cant use a soder and heatsink , go to an electronics teachnitian to shorten your cable , or make you a new one to the disaiered length and conectros so u are set with no loose cable to bother you and if u want to get it a step further use a glue gun to glue the cable on the kage and have the ends with the conectors free
