SONOS PLAY:5 Gen 2 Repair: How to open it and replace its fuse and varistor after overvoltage damage

Ғылым және технология

The Sonos Play:5 was completely dead after an overvoltage. In this video, the disassembly, the replacement of a blown fuse and varistor, and the reassembly of the device are shown.
Be aware of electrical hazard! There can be voltages above 300 V stored in the capacitors. The repair should be done by a qualified person. Always measure the voltage between the test points next to the capacitors.

Great video! I have actually cracked (from a fall so pretty significant crack) the housing. The electronics seem fine and connect to my network without issue. Have any advice on replacing the housing? It rattles way too much to leave as is. So much bass in the play 5!

Thanks for the Video! I was hoping to find some information on how to remove the microphone of the speaker since I do not want Alexa spying on me. Can you tell me if there is an easy way to just unplug or hardware-disable the microphone?

The 2nd generation Play:5 does not have Alexa and the older versions that come with microphones do not have them enabled. The manual says: “Two microphones are built into speakers that have a serial number starting with 1703 or lower. These microphones are not enabled and cannot be used. Speakers that have a serial number starting with 1704 and higher do not have microphones.”

Unfortunately Sonos does not provide any spare parts. They only offer a complete device replacement with maybe a small discount. I hope that the company policy will change. Maybe with the EU's introduction of the 'right to repair'.

Hi, I have replaced the fuse and varistor. Now I am able to turn on. Thank you for taking the effort to make this video! Sadly my play 5 is not well. The bass sounds are good. But the mid and high are almost not present. The speaker sounds as if it is in another room. Does anyone have a tip for me? I am convinced both plugs are reconnected as they should. Also I noticed two small loose plugs near the right bass speaker. I don't understand what the purpose is. One plug has 4 female positions with black, white and red wire, The other has a three female positions with blak, white and red wire. Is this related to my problem? I have a tip. I have dissasembled the left bas speaker to get good acces to reconnect the two plugs. I had difficulty connecting the small plug (Sound for the tweeters).

Thank you very much for the video! My play 5 2nd gen died (it doesnt turn on at all) and I was hoping the problem was in the fuse. But I tested it and it’s working correctly. What else could be dead with my play 5? How can I check what’s dead?

The other components are rather difficult to test or can be tested with live parts (what I do not recommend if one is not a qualified person). If I were to guess, I would say that it could be the rectifier.

The headphone jack is directly powered by the audio controller. It seems that the amplifier part (the left board) has a problem. You could start with checking the capacitors and transistors. I don't want to encourage you measuring the powered device, but if you would do so you could also check the voltages at the capacitors.

@@technikwald1564 There is also a play1 that flashes a few times when the white light is powered on, and then it stays on. It can't be seen by plugging in the network cable and the router can't be seen, nor can it be restored to factory settings. It can't connect to WiFi. Is it possible that the Nand flash memory chip is broken? or other? Thank you very much, I am willing to donate to your account and send me!😀

What color is the LED when it flashes? Is it the normal white flashing during boot? Is the Ethernet link given (see, e.g., NIC link indicator on router/switch)? In general, there should be a serial port somewhere on which you should be able to monitor the bootloader progress.
