Sonoff mini in UK British lighting circuit (ceiling rose loop-in wiring)

I will show you how to wire a sonoff mini, to a British lighting circuit. in the UK we have the loop in (3 plate system). it is not very common for there to be a neutral behind the light switch, so putting the sonoff behind the light switch is not an easy option. It's still quite easy to wire the sonoff mini directly to the ceiling rose.

    Good video thanks. This is what I was intending to do when I bought a few Minis but good to have it confirmed and also see that the lag on the lightswitch use isn't too bad. I've seen some take a good second or so before activating the light! Just one point, the Sonoff Mini is ZigBee rather than WiFi (or at least mine are) so they pass on the command through the chain. I've some ZigBee devices in metal light ceiling plates and they work fine because they only have to see the next device in the chain and not go all the way back to the hub in one step. Very clear video and explanation too.

Do connect the Lin from the Loop and Nin from the Neutral? For the Lout this will go to the extractor fan. I know u omitted the 2nd Nin but i still need it to go into the extractor fan right? Great video - very clearly explained. But what do UK Wiring Regulations say about having a permanently connected (and powered on) Sonoff in the ceiling? The lighting ring is protected at the consumer unit with a 6A RCBO - is that enough to satisfy the inspectors? I have done a similar thing with my porch light and a Sonoff Basic (with Tasmota firmware) in the ceiling. My wall switch is connected to GND and GPIO14 to toggle the current state.

  • @MyProjectBoxChannel

    @MyProjectBoxChannel

    I guess if the Sonoff is protected by a suitable enclosure, and no bare conductors on show. Then it should be OK above the ceiling. You would think the regs would be updated enough for smart lighting, and permanenty powered electronics, above the ceiling. It is 2023 after all🤔🤣. In Europe the fuse board/consumer unit, can have all sorts of DIN-rail mounted electronics inside. Not like in the UK were it's just circuit breakers. Sorry for my rant, it just seems like the UK is a bit behind Europe sometimes, when it comes to "modern" electrical installations.

    Ive been looking for this information for so long. Wiring is not an interest of mine so having this gets me alongso much further with my design work. I ended up bjying several no neutral switches which are not the best andcause flickering. Before you say it yes they were promoted as non flickering yet still flicker regardless. Yes they were expensive in comparison to this option but now that i have this info i can easily move my current system while also vsiually appearing "like normal". With my purchased smartswitches last year, they became a nuisance as my airbnb guests have a meltdownthe second they see they are different visually and that ive mentioned that they are "smart" switches. I know its silly but its become so painful to manage with guests. Its mad to see so many people freak out with the word "smart". Their lack of knowledge on whatthese units are and how they work to make life easier, quickly complicates the process and cuts out any positive time savings. Instead it complicates, confuses and annoys. This video helps as i cN change my system at home, introduce savings while also keeping guests at bay and preventing silly ignorant meltdowns.

    Excellent demo. I have a doubt. Kindly clarify if possible. Do I need to connect both the neutral post on the sonoff mini or just one neutral post as you have shown? The reason I'm asking is that I have a neutral behind the switch box that is the common neutral running on to the next connection and the light fixture at the ceiling has its neutral connected to the common neutral in the ceiling which then connects to the main neutral at the main junction box. There is no neutral wire coming directly from the light at the ceiling to the switch box. Please help. Can I leave the second neutral on the sonoff mini blank (without any connection)?

  • @MyProjectBoxChannel

    @MyProjectBoxChannel

    3 ай бұрын

    Yes you can leave the second neutral blank👍😉. Both neutral terminals are just joint together as one inside the Sonoff. You can use the extra neutral terminal as a neutral junction point if you like. It's neutral in and neutral out, but in reality they are both identical(joint together inside). Also it could be possible for you, to put the sonoff behind the light switch, if you have a neutral connection behind your light switch 🤔

  • @MyProjectBoxChannel

    @MyProjectBoxChannel

    2 жыл бұрын

    If your PIR relay has a switched live mains voltage output, you cannot connect it to S1 and S2! These are "no volt" connections (wire to a dead switch only). You can parallel your PIR mains voltage output with the output of the sonoff. Then when the sonoff turns ON, it can bridge out and override the PIR. It all depends on the type of PIR you are using. whether it's a direct mains voltage or a 12 volt low voltage type. I hope this helps.

    @MyProjectBoxChannel

    @@lewisstylianou292 I assume the 4 minutes is just the maximum time delay that the PIR stays ON to light the bulb? If you bridge the output of the Sonoff to the output of the PIR, the sonoff is simply overriding the PIR, and the PIR does nothing. And as long as the sonoff is activated the light will stay on, until you turn the sonoff off then the PIR takes over.

    @@benrichards3228 The Sonoff does not need to have a earth connection terminated to it directly (not all devices need an earth connection). As long as all the remaining earth wires are connected together, and if you put it into a metal enclosure, the enclosure connects to that earth as well. If you put it all into a plastic enclosure, then all the earth wires go to a Central Terminal connection ( wago connector, or terminal block of your choice). Lots of electronic "mains power modules", do not have an earth connection. Most of them are enclosed in plastic. If you think of those "double-insulated" devices that have a plastic earth pin on the plug(phone chargers for example).

    That means you can put the sonoff mini inside the light switch back box. You should have all the connections that you need right there, provided you have enough free space.

    Where there is neutral at the switch in a UK domestic lighting system, how are the connections to the switch made? The permanent lives (from previous fitting and next fitting) are connected together and into 'L-In'.The Neutrals are all connect together and into the 'N-in' ... So that leaves the light fitting. The neutral is connected with the other neutrals, the earth with earth, but what about the L-Out - what connects to this, and switch live - where does this connect to as there is only 1 cable? Seriously racking my brain at the minute...

    In the UK you have a traditional wiring system of a junction box up in the ceiling rose. This is where the light pendant attaches. The Line/Hot, Neutral and Earth, come straight from the Fuse box to this ceiling rose/ junction box. From there the Line drops down to the light switch, and from the switch, the switched-Line goes back up to the junction box/ceiling-rose. And then all the connections for the light pendant is made in that junction box/ceiling rose. There is normally no neutral wire dropping down to the light switch! Only on earth wire for the switch back box. All this means you have all the connections you need, to wire up the sonoff mini, right by the light fixture itself. The wiring system in the UK is a little strange, but once you get used to it, it's actually quite sensible.

    You should only need one for the set of lights.
