People were not as easily offended back then and this was a huge hit.

Gotta wonder, however, what Native Americans thought of it. I can easily imagine it being perceived as offensive due to it's stereotype background drum beat and chanting which, no doubt, was all composed and performed by white guys with no idea what an authentic Native American "war chant" actually sounds like.
As a full blood Native I enjoyed this song as a kid and still do. Enjoy your reactions.
Thank you for a song from my childhood that brought back so many memories
My mom's husband would call her White Dove after this song so when my brother was born his nickname was Running Bear.
For some reason this song got classified at the time of release as a Teenage Tragedy song. Teen Tragedy songs were a complete genre at the time and included songs like Teen Angel, Last Kiss, and Leader of the Pack simply because they usually featured teens and death. I don't know why people see Running Bear and Little White Dove as teens, I always thought they were in their twenties.
Carla you made my day and Don great reaction. As for people being offended? This is an epic love song, anyone offended by this song needs to desperately find something to do with their life! #UTRCM

Ben Colder did a parody to this song - very funny!!!
I can't remember a time that I didn't know who Sonny James was. He was a great talent
Always loved this song. Sonny was a country singer but his music was played in the pop radio stations.
Johnny Horton had 2 songs: Cherokee Shuffle & Cherokee Boogie & they have the word, “Squaw”. Both songs were written by a Native American Indian, Chief William Redwing. Loretta Lynn had a hit with, Your Squaw is on the Warpath Tonight. Loretta has Indian heritage in her, too. My dad was half Seminole & he used the word Squaw to describe an (American) Indian woman. We never took offense. I think it’s all a matter of prospective. Just my opinion,
it was received very well.
There was also a parody version of this song that will have you rolling on the floor. Off hand I can`t recall who did the parody.
Oh wow, so good to hear this one again! I remember both versions of this song being all over the radio. The Preston version was number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks! And Mike got the Sonny James date real close - it was 1969. Another little tid bit I picked up on Wikipedia --- this song was written by J P Richardson (AKA The Big Bopper)! Thanks for the wonderful request Carla and another great reaction Don!!!

When I was a kid my grandma ran a bar heard it there was popular
there were several native american or "indian" themed country songs back then, like Loretta Lynn's "squaws along the yukon" that would'nt be PC today with the terms they used, but they weren't so sensitive about that back then
Do Sonny James ‘Since I Met You Baby’
Another one from days gone bye it still sounds good I like it
You’ve gotta listen to “meet me in Montana” by Chancey Williams!! If you liked Wyoming Wind, you’ll love this one
Hi Don, you've had a great couple of weeks with your reactions! Mattea, Sonny James,, et.al. I've enjoyed every one of them! Hi to my sub friends - sorry I've been quiet lately.

Good Morning Don, after reading JLGWW comment on the Hatfield's and McCoys I'm going to take it farther back and say this was Country Music's rake on Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'. Also via Linda Nicholson on this channel learned this is a cover of a Johnny Preston song. Preston's was released in 1960 and was slightly more pop sounding and was considered a pop song Sonny James released his in 1968(?) and was a country hit . Both versions sounded very similar to me. Thanks for a great request Carla and a good reaction Don.----#UTRCM

@@JLGWW It's funny because the Romeo and Juliet connection had never occurred to me until today, even though I have heard this song many times. It was something Don said that made it pop into my mind. Also thanks for the info. on Ray Stevens now I'm going to try and find his version to listen to. Hope you have a great day!!!---#UTRCM

Funny just finished talking with my Sis and she said she had saw a Stove Top Perc. on line recently but couldn't remember the sight. She does a lot of shopping on line so no telling where she saw it but at least that may give you hope. Good luck in your search.---#UTRCM
I remember the song you were trying to recall, and it may have been sung by Johnny Horton, not sure. Two comedians billed as "The Indian and the White Guy" do Running Bear in their act, so I have a hard time feeling sad when I hear it.
Written by the Big Bopper for Johnny Preston. This is a cover of Preston's song. I prefer Preston's version, but they sound similar.
Love this...
I heard this many times years ago never knew the big bopper who died in the plane crash with buddy Holly was the one who wrote this till a few months ago came cross that fact .
George Jones Running Bear
I was more familiar with the spoof of this song by Jimmy Nesbitt called "Running Bare" and didn't even know this song existed until many years later.
this a native American Romeo and Juliet
I have heard this song before. It is very sad sounding to me. Cheers! ✌️

While I am a big fan of Sonny James. This was not his hit. Sonny James covered this song. It was written by J. P. Richardson “The Big Bopper” and Johnny Preston was the first to have a #1 hit with it. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4Sa1NKcoa_fqrw.html They were both from the Beaumont / Port Arthur Texas area.
