Ethan Benson You mean those both quite awesome games that rebooted the franchise once more, made for two great old-school experiences with both highs and lows but at any point with the long-lost charme of Playstation X-style 3D-Jump-n-Run-Action-Adventures ("Rise of Lyric") and non-linear platformers of MetroidVania-appeal ("Shattered Crystal")? Yeah, those were cool. "Rise of Lyric" is horribly unpolished and annoys me with it's framerate-issues, but since they took me back to what dragged me into gaming as a child and reminding me of the low standards I had back then, making me ask myself how I've become the cynical hater I am now, I can forgive them these mistakes, even though it's hard. And "Shattered Crystal" on the 3DS is, in my opinion, definitely to count as one of the best Sonic games. It still plays fast, but here the player really has to LOOK at the screen and PUSH buttons. I love the original three Sonic platformes, but there were quite a few times over the last years that I tried to revisit them and witnessed that he just runs and runs and runs and I can't really PLAY anything except for jumping for about two times per level. Plus: I like to play games on 100 percent. In "Shattered Crystal", this is not only possible, I am also motivated to do it. (I could talk of these games for hours now, but I leave it here.) I wouldn't recommend producing more than these two spin-off-games to SEGA, but it definitely is NOT an abomination. There are two charming, delightful games that were fun to play and still different from the former Sonic games. One can argue that rebooting the franchise over and over again has almost killed Sonic more than once, but it makes him stronger than Mario in my opinion. Mario was always stable and solid, yeah, but they never risked anything. They just decreased the difficulty and increased graphic power. And that's it. I have so much respect for Sonic today, even though he has lots and lots of failures.

It isn't a sonic game it's something completely different instead of making a "new sonic game" big red button could have just made a new franchise because it may have sonic's face but it is not a sonic game it's slow and very combat focused which is the opposite of what sonic adventure and the other games were

Ethan Benson Yes it is different, and that is the major problem of the Sonic franchise. It was always kind of the same in different scenarios, it switched between great 2D platformers that at one point kind of repeated themselves, and 3D third-person running, a) whose controls never and I emphasize NEVER ever worked properly so that it would be fun to play, b) whose camera angles, as it is also mentioned in the video, were horribly chosen, and c) whose level design was always and always and always the same... I swear that if SEGA ever uses this stupid giant hamster wheel loop again in a game I paid real money for, I puke into my WiiU... I'm so glad that for Sonic Boom, they for once touched the gameplay, and they touched it for good. It's a delight to play it on 3DS with this jumping mechanics and the fluent continuation in how you explore the level without being bored. And this is the point: exploration! I know I know, Sonic isn't about exploration, but I as a life-long fan of Sonic ask: why shouldn't it be? Even as a child I was kind of disappointed that those beautifully crafted levels that were so colourful and detailed just get overrun and ignored. Sonic in my very own definition isn't bound to a peticular style or genre or graphics, Sonic just needs to be a cool, young, open-hearted, outspoken hedgehog warming my heart whenever I see him, he has to have charisma, he has to have personality. That's all I want in the first place, and with that given, I will play anything from fast-paced 2D-platformer over hardly working yet awesome looking 3D-action-adventures up to strange RPG-ish games about King Arthur and Excalibur. The quality has to be debated separately, and of course Sonic Boom has many mistakes, and Sonic Generations has many many mistakes, and Sonic and the Black Knight has mistakes too, but I'm struggling with calling out different eras of Sonic games where one decade is fine and the other is the downfall. That might be the case with the Resident Evil franchise, but not with Sonic xD

Why do everyone ignore the Sonic Advance games? They and Rush were stupendous games.

Maid of Blood Sweat and Tears Talking about canon and good games are two different things. Just cause they don't like the story (or lack thereof) context of a game does not mean they can ignore the value of said work. Besides with the later frequent use of Cream the Bunny and Blaze the Cat by Sega in all of Sonic's multimedia, the questioning of their role in the series reality is very silly.

***** Sega isn't giving away their company because a bunch of amateurs think they should. Also, Sonic had a comeback with Colors and Generations, all they need to do is make another game like those. And who said Nintendo would even _want_ to buy SEGA? Remember Lost World? Nintendo helped out on that one, and look at how it turned out. This might sound weird, but this was my first introduction to sonic! I guess your explanation of Sonic being cool just made me want to know more about him, so I watched more KZread videos on Sonic and got hooked. Now I’ve been a hardcore sonic fan for two years and he is my obsession. I never thought that I would become obsessed with a fast blue hedgehog, and when I say it like that it sounds weird, but never the less, I have you to thank for it! Tbh I may have typed this comment before, but by now it’s lost in the sea of comments over two years. But there can never be enough thank yous! And this is what this comment is about, thanking you for showing me sonic! Too be honest I don’t know how I became a sonic fan in such a dark time for him (I’m talking to you boom!) but it happened because you showed me!

I dont care if they use the same stages as long as they restructure them to be different. They put a lot of work into those stages. That is a form of art and perfection on those early Sonic Games. I really liked the Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles game. Those games were epic!

Andrew Fazz I love Sonic 3 & Knuckles too but reimagined or not, it's still the same stage. I would rather have a completely new experience. Seeing Studiopolis shows they're capable of doing that so why rehash old stages? Wasn't that the point of Sonic Generations? To top that, it's not even an equal amount of old and new. So it's basically being less creative.

sonic truly is the rock star of the video game world. He started of huge! Amazing games, Ok Cartoons! He gave mario a run for his money. But all that fame got to him, he partied, he drank, he got high. He kept going strong! more cartoons more games! But then it went all went crashing down. He crashed and burned, he went to prison. he went to therapy and finally started getting back on track but then BOOM!!! he continues trying and his managers keep beating him to death, his fans are crazed and violent. Mario his once rival takes pity on sonic and lets him come along on his new smash project. poor sonic

shadow the hedgehog was my first 3d sonic game and i have a lot of memories with it and one thing i can say is that it got rid of what i hate in sonic heroes the mandatory switching characters. why cant i just play as the speed characters and use the other characters for other path ways making it easier on the player but if you only want to use sonic then its your pick, but that game would advise you to switch NOT force you to switch. they could have done this with suggestive level design.

Hyrule Warriors is non canonical and its still a great game so that's no excuse for the lack of quality. Nor can it be the different dev team since Sly 4 and Halo 4 had different devs and still were amazing games. SEGA just has bad direction with Sonic games if it lets its flagship series sink like this. You'd never see another publisher treat its flagship series so carelessly.

The last decent Sonic game was Colors/Generations. The last great one was Adventure 2/Unleased. Both Boom games are terrible and it's sad that the show is doing better then the games. The best thing about 06 was it's music and story. SEGA needs to take their time making a good Sonic game. Nobody's rushing them. I don't mind waiting 2-3 years for a good game as long as it's good. SEGA wanted to beat Mario and they did but now they're going down hill. Focus SEGA the Blue Blur isn't going anywhere just keep your head together and listen to the fans.

Bluu Hearts Yeah it's strange that Sega continues to rush Sonic games when it's clear he can be so great if they just took the time. I think Sega's executives see Sonic as a marketing tool more than anything...at least that's the only reason I can think for them wasting his potential so much. Ugh, looks like i have to repeat this again. SHATTERED CRYSTALS IS A GOOD GAME!, I Get your opinion but have you even played this game or seen its reviews? And Colors and Generations were decent? Excuse me, but these two were the best games, Along with Adventure 2. And Unleashed was really really fast. So i say all of these were good. The only problem in this time was Rise of the Lyric.

Robi Constantin Both Boom games are horrible. They are so boring and the story is forgettable. The music isn't memorable like Colors and 06 and the characters are bland. Also I said Colors was decent because people say that's when the whole 'kiddy phase' of Sonic started. I happen to like Colors a lot it's the Sonic last game I enjoyed.

Bluu Hearts Why is Shattered Bad? The story is decent, Amy got kindapped, you gotta save her from Lyric. The gameplay is good, decent you can say. It has no glithces like Rise of the Lyric. Trust me, its not bad. And the characters look like they are supposted to look in a Nintendo 3DS game. And kiddy phase? Erm, Sonic is a cartoonish video game... So? = Kids. :P, But its your opinion and i respect it.

I didn't like ANYTHING about sonic boom...Honestly the cartoon was ok and had pretty good animation but I didn't really like the personality changes. I remember when knuckles was smart AF and protected the master emereld. Now he doesn't know his left from right xD

Great video! I admit I love Sonic Heroes, but it was my first Sonic game. I am absolutely no match for pure light-hearted nostalgia from simpler, happier days.

It feeled so EPIC at the end with the music! :O

Sonic needs his personality back and the stories have to be better again (see Sonic Adventure). That's probably most important. And maybe more freedom in the levels, so being good will let you finish a level in a much lower time.

Why not make one about Chell? That would make an interesting video, after all, in interviews, it was said that she CHOOSES not to talk. And being confined alone, you can't expect her to keep her sanity intact. Nice intro BTW!

Ok.... so..... you bash Shadow the Hedgehog, an actually decent game, but call Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric a so-so one? No.... just.... no. Rise of Lyric is by far the worst in the franchise. Fans of Sonic are even starting to call it "The new Sonic 06" or "Sonic 14" And really, Shadow is actually ok, and even fun once you get over the story and occasional glitches.

Jake Smith Just an fyi, we didn't give any opinion on Sonic Boom in the video. I have heard it's terrible though. Also I agree that Shadow the Hedgehog's gameplay wasn't bad, just the premise was very silly and a knock to the franchise (in our opinion).

didn't mean to start this... But really, I actually kind of like Shadow. It IS a somewhat decent game. Gameplay was pretty darn good, story was meh, because a lot of inconsistencies... and I kinda see your point, because the game is EXTREMELY out of place for the series, but if it were its own game, it probably would be considered good. Except for being tedious and boring at times....

Shadow the Hedgehog was the shit. I honestly don´t understand what people didn´t like about it. It had good music, good animation, cool story and awesome gameplay. It was completely underrated for what it was.

Sonic Adventure 2 battle was my favorite. And let's not forget about the directors cut that aventures got. TBH, I really just liked those two. I felt like they were a good balance of the silliness and the "realness". Omega's ending was just so heartbreaking. I may have been a kid at the time but that shit made me cry.

***** same here. I cant see it got such a bad rep. Unleashed is personally my favorite 3d game in the series. (I hated the wii version though) it was the one that I had the most fun with. I even liked the werehog levels (except skyscraper scamper)

***** colors to me is my third favorite behind adventure 1 if only because the gameplay can be clunky and unresponsive at times, especially if you're trying to get the red rings but I do think it's a great game and I did enjoy playing through it 100%

At the end, I was totally expecting for him to say: "And most importantly, a defining set of ground breaking... failures."

I like Sonic 06. The glitches make the game fun.

Honestly I enjoyed playing 06' . I enjoyed the plot and the gameplay all together. Beside the fact that my sister was scared of mephilis and iblis , I think the bosses were really great. The interactions with the people were also really great because we enjoyed terrorizing the people. They're reactions were hilarious. As a 14 year old girl who isn't allowed to play COD or GTA like the rest of america 😢😢😢 , this game was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It made me get along with my sister (sometimes) and spend hours trying to beat the fast mode even though that ended in rage quit almost every time. The switch of the role play let's you enjoy the universe a whole lot better as you can enter the worlds of silver , sonic , and shadow. The final boss was quite amazing. So although it may have been terrible crap , it still was really fun. To this day I still enjoy listening to the music from the game AND kicking my sisters butt in the multiplayer. Also skill seekers should enjoy the tag game in the multiplayer selection , its requires max skill. To end this I do have to say Sonic Boom sucks hard. I mean they look really gross. That's like making teens out of Phineas and Ferb. Sonic Adventures 2 is the best ever because it was just really exciting to , again , play the multiplayer battle and kick my sisters butt. I now have that for Nintendo game cube even though its 2015. I hope sonic can not be described as retarded (sanic) any more and get out of this hole of video game shame (rhymeyas) . I mean honestly should we be spitting on it or helping it get up?!!!

Eh, older Sonic games were WAY better. Despite their cheesy voice acting and shoddy animations, they did have a great charm to them. Maybe it's my nostalgia kicking up. But I believe Sonic started to decline after they got rid of all the playable character narratives and choice of storyline, as well as their music turning into super dubstep techno crap.

I just came here from the never knew shadow and i am noticing a weird pattern: he keeps talkin sa2 but then skipping straight to shadow the hedgehog... why is he ignoring sonic heroes?

Treesicle is like: the death egg robot was no challenge for sonic. And I'm like: uh what did he say?

What are you talking about Sonic Unleashed wasn't that good. Whenever I was down I slapped that game in my X-box 360 and played for hours. I'm not gonna lie though, Sonic Generations was good it was just short. And Sonic Colors was almost as good as Unleashed. Like this comment if you agree.

I never finished Sonic Unleashed due life becoming busy, but I loved the game. The Werehog was great and I liked the story in general, it was in fact one of my favorite games of Sonic. Colours was good but indeed short, which was too bad.

I liked the sonic games on the internet browser. Used to play it in primary school and a bit in high school haha

I was fully prepared for a crappy fanfic video so I could write an inflammatory comment saying something like "more like The Story You Made Up", but once I actually watched the video I saw it was a rather well-written informative history of the actual character. Subscribed!

Don't judge, but I liked Sonic '06. It was likely because of the fact that I was a kid and found a new Sonic game and didn't bother looking at the inconsistencies, but I did like the plot elements introduced, soundtrack, gameplay, and aesthetics that the game provided.

imo, i'd say from start to finish, Colors is still the best so far in terms of 3D Sonics. However, it's not so good that it makes other games around it's time not worth checking out such as Generations and to some extent Unleashed.

I stick to the games that are back from the Sega, that was my childhood, and thats where I have the most fun. I have a current Sonic game for my PS3, and I'm not really excited about the camera angles always going so wonky. But meh, I haven't kept up with the new Sonic games, all I know is he will always be my favorite game character.You want a game that'll test you? Play the classics. I can't make it to some checkpoints with a ring I swear. Barely make it through a whole level with 70+ rings. Its always a fun time, the sounds, the music, will always be fun. I think people that know about the classic games would play them over the ones now, but then again, people do have different interests. I mean come on, its Sonic after all lol.

semaseri x Well I hear ya. Thats something I'll have to look into then. I'm not really a fan of the whole werehog thing, but hey, they say don't knock it till you try it. I don't see Sonic dying out anytime soon. Even if it hits the lowest of lows, it will always have a flame. As long as the classics are out, it'll always live on. When I see Sonic, I see him for his speed, and like I either stated in a recent comment to you, or to someone else, its also his cockiness. His sarcasm, all hilarious stuff. I'm curious as to why they took the paths that they have with the characters, making Tails like an einstein and Knuckles like some big huge Echidna version of Donkey Kong. But I hear you definitely, I'll have to go out and get one of the newer games and check them out.

semaseri x I never seen Shadow as a match for Sonic. I thought Shadow relied on weapons and vehicles. The first time I seen Shadow was in a racing/fighting type of game. And he skated around with hover/rocket boots. I kinda like Shadow, hes pretty cool, people take a liking to him, I see him as no match for Sonic, but who knows. His combo thing in the Sonic game there we were talking about, his combos seemed to be overpowered and good. Being able to stick to a target to throw kicks and punches. (stick as in like float in the air to beat them up or whatever).

"Hasselhog" will haunt my every living moment...

Still crazy to me that this was my first introduction to Sonic on the internet

Let's hope that Project Sonic 2017 will continue the good game streak (excluding Sonic Boom).

The main reason for Heroes' problems was the PS2. It was originally going to be a GameCube and XBOX exclusive, but Sony told SEGA that they had to port it to PS2, or else they wouldn't be allowed to release a game on their system ever again. Since Heroes wasn't built for systems like the PS2 at all, they had to redo several things to get it ported to the PS2.

I actually enjoyed Sonic '06 as a kid and even now I still go back and fuck around with the glitches for shits and giggles

If I could direct a Sonic game, this is what I would do. There would be four playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. Sonic's levels would be like Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. Tails' levels would be a Star Fox style flying and shooting (because that's all I can think of for him) Knuckles' levels would be hunting just like in SA2 And Shadow's levels would be a crazy character action fighting style, like the werehog, but faster, and he would have different powers What do you think? Good? Bad? Worse? Terrible? Something in between?

What's wrong with making Tails and Knuckles play like Sonic though? Ala classic Sonic...just gives you a different set of abilities to make the end. I'd settle for more treasure hunting for Knuckles though, so long as they used the SA1 model rather than the SA2 model. Same goes for Tails with shooting stages, so long as he uses the SA1 Gamma model rather the Tails/Eggman model from SA2 (which was just slow and sluggish). I can see Shadow needing a different gameplay type though as his abilities are identical to Sonics and duplicate characters is a waste, really, (both can use Chaos Control, afterall). But actually I do like the idea of putting him in Werehog like stages should another Adventure come along (so long as they are not as longwinded as the Unleashed Werehog stages were of course!). They were pretty fun at times in small doses.
