i like sonic 2 better. plus there is no spike glitch.

Arin has some sort of deep-seated bias against the Sonic franchise as a whole I've never really understood, so he's always going to rag on a Sonic game regardless and be blind to the good parts of a Sonic game's design despite him being quite knowledgeable in game design himself.

Ultimately it's just that he doesn't like the momentum based platforming. Sonic controls a lot looser than games like Mega Man. The closest he came to liking a Sonic Game was Mania where at least he could recognize it was a labor of love. The problem is he tends to phrase his opinions on game design as objective, when they're just his opinions, and the Internet doesn't like that.

Arin's view on games is heavily dependant on how good he is at the game. Arin isn't able to appreciate the design because he isn't good at it and he's too smug to say, "hey I'm just not good" so he pulls a DSP.

this is definitely present in n64 zelda games. he plays it how he wants, which is perfectly fine, but then acts like it's the only way (or the only way without either being mlg or playing it in a super convoluted way), and then judges it as that's all there is to it. case in point, he waits for the wolfos to charge so he can dodge and then attack, which is part of his wait-and-attack pattern that he notices a lot in the game. however, all he has to do with the wolfos is walk up to it and then it speeds up the whole process.

He did that to demonstrate. Of course, he probably couldn't do it legit since he is too used to the level design etc. Context matters not the fact that the demonstration seemed off. To me, you would as well be like "4:40 But he could've just dodged the bullet and not stand still!"

Tyrzi but doesnt that go against his entire point of it being momentum based? I mean it makes more sense to keep momentum than to purposefully lose it, especially if your trying to demonstrate how it works in normal gameplay.

Lmao i never took the Grumps opinion on Sonic games seriously, arin was a megaman fan first soo yea, i never got the feeling he respected sonic the same, i thankfully grew up with exactly both so i love them just the same, i pine for both sonic adventure 3 and megaman Legends 3.

The spike glitch was fixed in a later revision.

Sonic 1 a decent Sonic game. It served as the template to make really great games like Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 (& Knuckles). Yes it has flaws, but what game doesn't? I mean Egoraptor praises Megaman X for being more linear than other Megaman games because "it doesn't have a tutorial, but it teaches the game by playing through it". There should be no fucking WRONG WAY to play a goddamn Megaman game, but hey, according to Egoraptor that is great game design for some reason. He praises giving the players less options. If you do not do Chill Penguin's stage first (Unless you are playing Maverick Hunter X), you are literally playing the game wrong because 90% of the game requires the fucking dash boots...but THIS is great game design to him. I love Megaman X, don't get me wrong...but he doesn't know SHIT about good game design. Egoraptor just fucking sucks at video games, but he gets a pass because he's Egoraptor. He is just a more popular DarkSydePhil. He's a good artist, but that's it.

Simpleton Apollo i never felt like he was bad at games but more so him adapting more causal approach to the games they play in game grumps, it'a. more of a 'talk show with bits of gameplay acknowledgement', which i love the boys random rants sometimes but in turn getting more commentary we lose the focus on gameplay and taking it much less seriously.

What you think is bad game design might be great game design to other people. I'm not saying that to defend Game Grumps, I don't even watch them, I'm just saying good game design is subjective.

I remember in one of their videos (I think it was Sonic 3), Arin said he didn't like the design because you just move toward the end of the stage and avoid obstacles. In other words, _every single platformer in existence._ Taste may be subjective, but you have to draw the line when someone constantly contradicts themselves and thinks games like Super Mario 64 or Thousand Year Door are objectively bad.

I love the Sonic games.

Looking back, half the zones on Sonic 1 are annoying but I think your commentary words it best. Sonic isn't the hardest game but it isn't for 3 year olds either. You can't expect the game to reward you for doing nothing lol At least you can admit when you're bad at a game.

I have more fun with Sonic 1 than Sonic 2, though.

With your voice I thought that you were going to be sarcastic and make fun of the game, but apparently I was mistaken.

Whenever someone tells me that marble zone doesn't let you go fast I laugh. The truth is the game is designed to a point where if your moving fast enough sonic can use his momentum to jump over a lot of shit. Those sections with the blocks across lava? You can skip them if you move fast enough.

But you gotta know the level layout to do so. In a first playthrough, you won't know what to do and come to the conclusion that the game sucks ass... It kinda does, because that's not good design. A game is supposed to be fun even the first time through.

That argument can be used for everygame under the sun. People could say the data battles in kh 2fm suck ass, which they do not. You have to learn to play the game before you become good its natural progression. Its unreasonable for someone to play the final boss of a game for example without playing anything else beforehand and coming to the conclusion the games shit. It doesn't work.

2:51 Actually, there originally suposed to be a "press start button", but it was accidentally removed by a bug. But if a secret credits screen is unlocked (only accesible on japanese hardware), it restores it back.

I’m pretty sure the deal with the spike glitch is the game doesn’t have enough time to load the invincibility frames, and it notices that all of a sudden, you’re on spikes, so it kills you

I wasn’t born in the late 80’s, and as such I never got to experience the original Sonic games as a child. Meaning that I lack that deep-seated nostalgia which a lot of 90’s kids have. However, I went out if my way to beat the original Sonic trilogy, both in the fast 60hz NTSC mode, and the slow 50hz PAL mode which is native to my country. And honestly, I think they are all amazing games, with no nostalgia blinding. Sonic 1 suffers from “First Game Syndrome” and as such had some major flaws that its successors didn’t have, such as the lack of a spindash, no Super Sonic, Spring Yard Zone, the Special Stages, and Star Light Zone. Sonic 2 is better, with all levels but Oil Ocean being fun and good-looking, and it’s main flaw being the final boss’s huge difficulty spike, the Special Stages, and the abundance of water. Sonic 3 & Knuckles however is probably the best classic game, with some of the best levels, -some of- the best music, Sky Sanctuary, Angel Island, Hyper Sonic, and an incredible final stage. The Special Stages are even bearable, and in some cases fun. It’s main drawback however is the sprites; I prefer Sonic’s Sonic 2 sprites more.

Just Another KZread Channel you absolute madman. Why the hell would you willingly run it in 50hz. Sonic 2 and 3 used code to fix a lot of the slowdown but i cant even begin to fathom running labyrinth zone 15% slower than it already is.

DeadTurret Sonic 3 ran normally everywhere, but Sonic 2 was just as slow as Sonic 1 in PAL regions, as it’s code only fixed the music. But yeah. I played the game like that. I actually thought it was okay, just a different take on a classic game. I also actually quite like Labyrinth Zone too, but it was very slow on the PAL version.

I love Sonic 1 and 2, but i think 2 is better. BTW Starlight zone is my Fav because of the setting and the music and have to agree with marble zone, too much waiting.And Scrab brain is ok, but thats just because i play sonic 1 trough every few months.

I think its funny that the whole thing with people not knowing to pressed start for sonic 1 is the result of a bug. The start text is in the game and can be re-enabled, but im pretty sure the sega logo prevents it from showing up.

As a sonic fan since child-hood. I must say, on behalf of all fans, that we usually tend to agree that sonic 1 is the worst of the classic sonics, SPECIALLY when it comes to level design.

That part in Green Hill with the spikes and the swing isn't really bad if you jump and hold right. You might not get it on the first go, but in Sonic, the first go is generally the most cautious go anyway. And yes, Sonic 1 has plenty of design flaws, I would say because they were trying to both do something new and cater to existing platformer audiences. It isn't amazing by today's standards but it is still a solid platformer IMHO.

The "spike glitch" is not a glitch. It was intentionally designed that way so that spike pits would be lethal.

Yeah ive been playing the game for 10 years and have never ONCE died due to the spike glitch. If you see spikes in Green Hill it means you are being punnished for taking the low route.

The fanfic has only one flaw. Where's the perversion? XD

Marble Zone is still fun to me. I enjoy the platforming parts, as well as loving the music

FUN FACT: There was actually supposed to be a message on the the title screen saying "press start" or something like that but beacause of a programming error the message is never shown to the player, showing that even before you did anything, the game already glitched out... also & Knuckles

Great video, and a very fair critique! Watching Arin use the "it's supposed to be faaaaaast" argument in almost every episode of the series broke my heart, cause I know that if Sonic wasn't marketed that way, he would likely treat it as just a platformer, and maybe give the games in general a bit more constructive criticism instead of...you know....Arin criticism, where his lack of patience dictates whether or not be enjoys a game.

The "spike bug" wasn't a bug, it was intentional design to make the spikes a unique hazard. That said, there's a good reason none of the future games and ports don't have it

Probably someone already commented, scrap brain zone 3 using the labyrinth tileset is because they ran out of time to make a new level...but its a mistery why they didnt just do another one using the SB design.

Good video, but I'm surprised you didn't even give a mention to the special stages or lack of saving. Still, I agree with everything you said, including you bit on Labyrinth Zone.

I like the grumps but watching them play sonic games hurt me. Arin does not expect the fact that he sucks and his default mindset when it comes to new sonic games is bad. When I watch him play it’s like he is deliberately playing bad to fit his narrative.
