That's debatable tbh the overall story can be stand alone. If it wasn't for the boost formula move set it would be hard to actually place Unleashed in a timeline.

I only have two problems with all the references (and even then, they're just nitpicks). First is the fact that Sticks is from an alternate continuity, and yet Amy mentions her in the ending as if they already know each other. Granted, she probably has a counterpart in this continuity, so you could excuse it with 'only Amy (and possibly Cream) knows Sticks in this universe'. Second is the fact that it makes it harder for newcomers (like my Dad) to get into it. I'm doing my best to explain everything he needs to know to him, but it's hard to do that without getting into all the discourse involving the previous games, and I think I'm losing him.

@@MattTOB618 that's some fair criticism, but i belive that the referenced were there just for the newcomers to learn that the franchise is way deeper than people used to belive. Also, Sticks technically already existed on that reality, but only on Spinoffs like "Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics Games", and "Sonic Runers", but i agree that she needed a better introduction first.

As for the references they’re fine because the story still stands on its own and it’s more so a treat for fans who know the story finally gluing everything together, in dialogue at least

While I like the many references Sonic makes knowing it's proper acknowledgment of what's canon, it still rings hollow to me because there's too many. It starts to feel less like a cheeky wink saying "remember this?!" And instead starts feeling like a nostalgia checklist and that mainly leaves me feeling indifferent to these references because of Sonic Team's past over reliance on nostalgia. It feels less genuine and more just an attempt to win fans over, if that makes sense.

I think my favorite comparison on Sonic making notes across the land and referencing his past is that it’s like a Family Guy cutaway

I just love how all references perfectly fit together how crazy the Sonic series gets with its characters. Just look at the Black Arms, Dark Gaia or the villains in this very game. It's so weird to think that these extremes exists together with a bunch of rainbow animals.

Sonic getting hit butt burnt like Mario makes sense. Considering Mario Odyssey had Mario jumping through big gold rings and rolling like Sonic. They’re learning from each other lol.

A Tangle name-drop was a surprise to be sure but definitely a welcome one. She's my favorite character from the comics along with Whisper so to see her actually be canonized in one of the games is pretty great.

Sega does own the comics, also they appear as playable characters in the Sonic Runner games. So who know, everything could be canon.

@@jazzratoon I mean obviously Sega owns them but the canonicity of Sonic was VERY dodgy until Frontiers just confirmed it's all cannon. Also thanks I didn't know they were in the runner games. Maybe we'll actually see them make more appearances outside of the comics.

Why wouldn’t Dark Gaia and Chip be canon? They were part of the main story of a mainline game. I’m confused why you’d make a big deal about them being canon, which they always were, but just casually mention that the game confirms Sticks The Badger is canon when she had only appeared in a spin-off, side series.

Sticks being canon to both the Boom and the main series continuities was always planned, but never properly executed. The closest before this was Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where she was made playable.

Meanwhile, you have rooftop run in generations, a game that came out only 3 years after unleashed. That game established Sonic adventure, 06, unleashed and colors are canon, so making a big deal out of nowhere about Dark Gaia and Chip is unnecessary and dumb.

@@no_less03 He isn't making a big deal out of it. He mentions it because that surprised him, and it's everything but stupid since Unleashed doesn't really fit with the other games. I know I had the exact same reaction, for many references to previous titles. Like, Sonic Boom, canon to the rest? It was clearly meant as a soft reboot, so it's weird to try to include it now. Colors? That one doesn't even look like a Sonic game. The very idea of making every Sonic game canon is stupid. Sonic has never built up a world. There is no "unified Sonic universe". Each game was its own thing. And it's fine, world-building is not mandatory. These references are cool to hear though.

After reading about Whisper a few days ago (a wolf sniper who lost her friends to a tragic betrayal but who continues to fight for good), I'd love to see Tangle and Whisper introduced in future games. They're very different personalities to the usual Team Sonic roster and the new dynamics (very energetic Tangle vs No nonsense Knuckles, outgoing Sonic and quiet Whisper) could be interesting.

Knowing that Ian Flynn was writing this game, I wasn't surprised by how deep of cuts some of the references were, but to know that it was Sega themselves who decided on them was a nice surprise.

So many cool references in the game! I love how you set it up so that every reference lead into another one, it felt super cohesive. Two more that spring to mind is in the Egg Memo that mentions the United Federation and Planet Donpa Kingdom, Eggman mentions EggNet, which is another reference to the comics! While this one isn't confirmed, I'm convinced that Find Your Flame, the song that plays during the fight with the Knight Titan, has a melody line that references Infinite's theme from Forces, and it's even performed by the same artist, Tyler Smyth.

@@DPadGamer It debuted in Sonic Colors as the name for Eggman in the Wisps' language (barring the "Mc" part in McNosehair). Sonic added the "Mc" and then it reappeared in both Sonic Lost World and an episode of Sonic Boom

@@Gnidel Well, like I said in my reply to DPad, the name originally appeared as "Baldy Nosehair," without the Mc. Sonic added the Mc later in that same cutscene, and it was the version with the Mc that was later used in Lost World and an episode of Boom

Here's a couple more you missed: At the start of the game, when Sonic first stands up after escaping Cyber Space for the first time, he makes a pose that looks so similar to the action stance he makes in Sonic Adventure, that i'd count it as a reference. Also, in that same Egg Memo which confimed TSR as canon, an "EggNet" is mentioned. The EggNet is an Eggman Empire communications network that has until now only been mentioned and a kind of significant plot device in the IDW comics. The "Bad Guys" miniseries has been the piece of Sonic media that has explored this concept to it's fullest so far.

Silver is also mentioned once you talk to the hermit Koco after maxing out your stats. He gives an "if only we had a hero like you during our time of need" line, and Sonic goes "I know a time-traveler. Want us to rewrite history when this is over?"

Sonic mentioning Tangle gets me so hyped for the future of the series, maybe we’ll see Whisper, or Jewel, or possibly even Surge and Kit depending on how their story goes in the comics in the future

Kinda doubtful. Ian seems convinced that the characters will only be appearing in the comics. Her existence in the game continuity is neat, but not really a guarantee that we’ll be seeing her - much like Mighty, Nack, or Sally.

Little thing: its likely that the 'knight' boss fight is a reference to sonic and the black knight, as he bears a striking resemblance to king arthur from that game. This would also make sense as the director for frontiers was also the director for black knight

The word "infinite" is not capitalized in The End's monologue. Also it's translated in other languages, so The End doesn't say in German "Ich bin Infinite" but "Ich bin unendlich". So that line has absolutely nothing to do with Infinite.

Particularly interesting sonic mentioned Tangle. I did not expect such an explicit nod to the comics

At one point in a scene with Sonic and Sage, sonic responds with "let's do it to it", which is a line he's famous for saying in SatAM.

One you forgot: the Eggnet mentioned comes from IDW like Tangle. In fact, it comes from Archie too!

The line "Let's do it, to it" dates back to SatAM and is rarely used. Also on the lines of the show fishing up an 'Acorn' and a 'Silver Acorn' is incredibly likely to be a reference to Sally Acorn. One of the most significant (but forgotten) characters in the Sonic franchise.

Question why do believe the acorn and silver acorn are references to Sally/mecha sally? What are the chances sonic team even know Sally let alone mecha sally a deep cut reference from a comic long dead and never translated in Japanese officially?

There is actually an oblique reference to Infinite in the game, one of the verses from "Find your Flame" (the Knight Titan fight) has the exact same beats as Infinite's theme and is also sung by Tyler Smith, it's almost a counter-theme to Infinite's theme.

I've been waiting for a video like this! The references are constant during gameplay, so having it compiled in one spot is awesome. My favorite was the "End Goal" one, made me laugh so hard during my playthrough. Great vid as always!

The drowning theme inside the red balloon enemies is actually from Sonic Colors Wii.

We have to make Sonic Frontiers game of the year. It wasn't even nominated for BEST SOUNDTRACK. Have they even heard "Undefeatable" or "Break Through It All" or "Find Your Flame?" I mean come on, cyberspace slaps and the mellow and mysterious beats of the open zone are amazing! It's criminal that it wasn't nominated for best soundtrack. So let's get it to player's voice awards number 1. We can do it! Also, we just lose the lead to genshin. We cannot lose.

Orbot and Cubot are actually mentioned another time in a story related cutscene. Eggman mentions that he’ll integrate Sage into his eggnet, which would be a nice change of pace from Orbot and Cubot, to which Sage reflects on how they are like her brothers, since both she and them are Eggman’s creations.

I love that they use the sonic colors drowning music for the enemies

Casually mentions how Tails stopped Eggman from blowing up Station Square.. You know, right before Perfect Chaos flooded it and killed all the inhabitants.

I actually really like the references, it gives homage to all his adventures in this new land. While he could always go back to explore the places he already been, this is a new land he’s never been so he’s exploring and kinda shows he may be a bit homesick from the world he knows. I really like the direction they went with this game and I hope they keep this up, yeah there needs to be some polish and all but the universe feels like it’s expanding yet it’s all one universe.

Fun fact: Shadow has stated himself that he is not the true Ultimate Lifeform and that Sonic is. All has to do with the Mural seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 where the echidnas prophesied the battle on Angel Island between Sonic and Eggman. Shadow was actually created because Gerald Robotnik had a huge interest in ancient Echidna civilization

Huh, that reference to Tangle makes me think that they're really trying to make the IDW Comics be part of the main Sonic series, which makes sense as that's what Sega's goal is at the moment.

I love all these references, it’s just incredible ! I’m sad there is no reference to Silver and Whisper, but there are already many of them, and even some that we wouldn’t have imagined !

There actually IS a reference to Silver in the game. After getting all the upgrades you can from Elder Koco, he mentions memories of the past, with Sonic responding that he knows a time-traveller that could help prevent their disaster in the past if they wanted.

The End said "I am infinite" as the fact Sonic fought mighty machines and mighty gods, but they were finite.

Although when they said that their usually feminine voice gained a second masculine one talking in unison with them. That voice sort of sounded like Infinite. I’m not sure if I was imagining it but it really sounded like that.

Idk if it counts as references, but a lot of the stages you can play are direct riffs from stages from other games. One of them (I forget which) is a direct copy of Green Forest from SA2, and there's another stage that is a direct copy of Metal Harbour from SA2 as well! (Hence why I recognized them)

All Star actually gets mentioned at some point, something like "I will have to pull an all star move right there", dont remember what caused the voiceline through. My guess was that it referenced the game, but I never played it, so I cant say for sure. Also: Silver gets indirectly mentioned: If you max your defence and attack and talk to the Elder (Or Hermit, i dont remember which is which), he will talk about mistakes in the past and Sonic answeres with "I know a time traveler that could help you!".

All Star move is a reference of Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, and Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, Mephiles would only send him a one way ticket to oblivion.

back when we still thought this game’s name was gonna be Sonic Rangers, i was praying that Tangle would get a cameo in the game, my prayers have been answered!

I haven't finished the game, so I thought people were being over-critical of the reference memes, but this was pretty spot on. lol. Still, glad to see Sega building some sort of continuity finally.

I almost wonder if the whole final boss fight with The End being a planet-like being set to destroy everything, Sonic being thrown/shot through the planet-like being, the planet structure planning to self destruct when hindered, and Sage’s sacrifice took inspiration from the battle with Dark Oak from Sonic X. While still fairly different in areas, a lot if it felt familiar and like a potential nod to the show or had used that fight as inspiration.

if Tangle's canon that means Whisper and Jewel are likely canon as well. Maybe even Starline, Surge, and Kit, though those 3 would likely need an entire game to themselves. I... wouldn't hold my breath on Belle though, she's heavily tied into Post-Forces events that didn't happen in canon.

Finally someone talking about The End saying Infinite! Infinite in Forces flew up. The End does kinda tell he/she (I don't longer know) different forms. Spoiler alerts for Frontiers at the last after credits cutscene with Eggman, he revives Sage, but the Glitch effect appears again. That glitch effect appears everytime The End is around, so Eggman revived them both.

This video broke me enough to cave in and check out some sonic frontiers stuff before I get it. Thanks you!

As a Sonic fan, I feel it's better to not care that much about canon, because that can change at any moment. Better to just come up with your own headcanon, and then become infuriated when anyone says something that contradicts it. That's the Sonic fandom way!

My friend, the chilli dog and sonic goes back further, the cartoon was based on the comics, issue one had the recipe as well as showing his love for them Technically Orbot and Cubot show up even as early as Sonic X, however these were slightly different designs

You missed the reference to Silver the Hedgehog. The reference is only discovered once you have maxed out ALL your stats (Attack/Defence/Speed/Rings) and then speak with Hermit Koko. During the conversation, he mentions about being in the dream for too long and how things could have been different if he did more like his brother, Elder Koko. Sonic mentions that "he knows a Time Traveller" who could maybe change their fate in which Hermit declines the offer. It is known that Silver does travel from the distant future in multiple games, being 06, Rivals, Forces just to name a few.

There is a reference you missed. When Sonic first talked to the elder Koco on the first Island and during one of the optional conversations Sonic has with Sage on the final Island, Sonic says "Let's do it to it." That's a direct reference to the Sonic Archie comics. It was his catch line. Similar to Mario's Let's a Go". He even at one point calls Tails "little bro" witch is another thing he says in the Archie comics.

10:50 I actually noticed this too in Ares Island and I was so confused as to why there would be a Master Emerald fake

I don't know where you got that info about the chili dogs but it was wrong. The adventures of sonic the hedgehog was the first cartoon and it had chili dogs before sonic satam

In the end cutscene when Amy says that she should take Sticks and Cream on a roadtrip could be a reference to an issue in IDW where Amy takes her and some other girl characters on a roadtrip

Nice video! I personally got a kick out of the boatload of callbacks in Frontiers, though I worry that newcomers could be confused or put off by them. I have to imagine that only a fraction of the people that play the game will get references to stuff like Dark Gaia or the events of SA1, considering those games aren't available on modern consoles and tons of fans are coming from the movies.

Woaw thank you about the buble enemy fact Was personnaly very pissed to try drowning during my play just to witness the no stressful music. Yeah I totally lol when they bring up the Turning pannel / Big old ring joke.

1:02 I'd take this as Sonic Lost World reference, because that was the only Sonic game where Yoshi appeared, and Sonic here really does that Yoshi's "aw-waw-waw-waw"

In an Egg Memo, Eggman mentions the name “Baldy McNoseHair”, which was given to him by Yacker in Sonic Colors and is mentioned by Sonic in Sonic Lost World

There's also a reference to Silver when Sonic talks to Hermit Koco there's a chance they will have a conversation with Hermit wishing they'd had a hero like Sonic back then and Sonic answers with "I know a time traveler. Want us to rewrite hystory when this is over?"

In one part Sonic says "Let's do it to it!" which is a callback to Sonic's quips from both DiC series. Robotnik also says "I hate that hedgehog" to Sage, which may be a callback to Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (the sillier DiC series).

You left out Knuckles’s flashback to angel island or the cutscenes that are in the storybook games’s art style

Just as most Sonic Games, this game has SOOOO many callbacks and refrences!

Even though his character is jackal-sh*t I’m glad Infinite got a mention, he’s my favorite one time villain since him and his theme made Sonic Forces tolerable. Mephiles isn’t that bad either

FYI: you can fight the hard mode boss by simply toggling hard mode on before the loading screen after the final Island Titan dies, so you don't need to replay the whole game. Unless you want to :p

It is understandable after what he did to his friends during the events to the Lost Hex (especially Tails).

I love the references especially because it doesn’t seem to favor any specific era or game. From classic, adventure, to modern every era of Sonic is mentioned. As a Sonic Unleashed fan it was great having it referenced.

An Easter egg I found just now is when your in the cyber space levels and hold down on the control stick while running you do Sonic’s classic spin dash / roll from Sonic 1 and it even does damage

Man but the one that references sticks the badger is really confusing because sticks is from the sonic boom universe and now Sega is making her offical in the normal sonic universe

I like the one where Sonic Looks at a Box on top of a piece of land sticking out and says "That is begging to be climbed, the view would be incredible!" A reference to a Sonic 2006 bug where you can stand on a box and attack to make Sonic and it go up infinitely. Its not the exact quote, just going from my memory.

Bro, idk if it’s too late, but in cyber stages, if you home attack and then boost as soon as you press square, you will go really fast in cyber stages

Pretty sure that she's in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, where she has a normal design

I started playing this game day one and I haven't been back to it since I need to finish it I wouldn't say it's the best Sonic game but it's the best we've had in a long time it's pretty good

Sticks the badger was also playable in a 2015 sonic mobile game(sonic runners) which is no longer available

There’s a prologue comic where they fight an Eggman robot quoting boss fights from Sonic Adventure: “Get a load of this!”

I instantly thought of the major easter egg when the end say "I am infinite"
