@@deanmoriarty6015 It's all down to the writing. Black Knight was the last game to be written by the same dude responsible for all the worldbuilding, lore and character work from the adventure era. Forgive me for not finding his name, but he truly knew the characters inside and out. His writing style very much reminds me of anime, which is a win. Then the series got handed to some westerners who didnt have any passion for the source, not enough to research beyond wikipedia. I feel like for Pontac and Graff, they just saw it as an easy paycheck, because it's a kids game. I have no respect for the way they treated the series Edit: His name is Shiro Maekawa

@@deanmoriarty6015 I disagree. Roger can deliver a good Sonic, the Boom series is proof of that. It's definitely in the writing. Have you watched Regular Show? Roger voices a character in there, Prof that he is a decent VA. In a recent stream I did for Colours, I was wearing a headset too and I could hear his talent in some of the lines he delivered. With all VA's it takes them time to settle into the role. I think Jason and Ryan started weak too when they started

For a game primarily targeting a children audience, I think the theming of this story is quite mature. Even though the theme of life, death, and existentialism is very light, I can appreciate that the earlier Sonic storylines were willing to at least touch on subjects like this.

Joining the hope train (hehe) just to bring some positive energy to the upcoming release. Once the people over at Sonic Team realize this is what the games should be like and stop taking all the fanbase says so personally, they can bring back heart to the series. That flower Merlina holds resembles a Marigold- symbolizing despair and mourning. Fits pretty damn well with Merlina's motivations- I love this game's attention to detail

i played this game before on my wii, but i randomly wanted to watch the cutscenes again and wow. my interpretation is that knuckles failing in the battle and wanting to commit die is basically just a metaphor to people who fear failing, and it’s just so perfect. like “a knight who fails his king is unfit to live!” like in “someone who fails is unfit to live!”. and then you have sonic, who says “isn’t there more to being a knight than just serving a king?”, meaning “isn’t there more to being a person than just succeeding?” anyways just wanted to point that out since i don’t see many people talking about this part much :)

This game is really one of a kind. The Stories,music ,characters and their motivations for their actions. It shows that we can't always be the good guys and that we shouldn't always give up. It also shows us what sorrow can do to you. And that you have to accept that everything has a beginning, but also an end. But also I think this is the first and last game where we actually see Shadow bow before Sonic without command...

People may say this is a "bad game" but it made my childhood and thats all that matters. I love how sonic notices his chili dogs missing before he notices he's in a completely different world

Love Amy in this game, she helps sonic, not brags out for him (even though she is different in this game) and plays a important role in the story. She didn't just sit there and #prayforsonic, she wanted to know if Sonic was a true knight, she also helped them where to locate to form the barrier around the kingdom.

In sonic adventure 1 Amy helps the little birdie and doesn't pray for sonic she almost busts out on her own from the egg carrier, in sa2 she breaks out Sonic from his prison

This game is actually incredible. I can't believe it doesn't get the recognition it deserves in comparison to more mainstream games, like the Adventure games, Unleashed, and Frontiers. The characters are written beautifully, staying in their original character but fitting into their alternate roles perfectly, it touches on darker matter (no one ever addresses that Gawain was literally going to kill himself), and the humor isn't forced or overused. We've saved ourselves from constant "Baldy McNosehair" jokes and being over the top with edginess. Black Knight is such a great game, and the only reason I would ever read a rewrite is because of the pacing. The pacing is the ONLY complaint I have with Black Knight, and even so it's not terrible. Killer game. 10/10.

This game has Jason at his absolute best. His line delivery in every scene is just on point. Miss you man~

God man that ending. That shit meant a lot to me as a kid. This hurts my heart to see when you look at how sonic is now.

I genuinely like the story of this game. It has characters with legitimately complex motivations, and Sonic wasn't the cut and dry good guy he's always been. It's pretty nice.

KashKey yeah, the Sonic lore was great until we hit a strange lore in Sonic Colors. After that, character development for everyone was destroyed. They even made Tails afraid of Chaos in Sonic Forces!

When Sonic gets up refusing to give up and It Doesn’t Matter from Sonic Adventure kicks in that was a really hype moment!

This game has my favorite Sonic story so far, and experiencing it again has made me wanna write something. This may seem weird, but I think it´ll be fun. This is my introduction to a Black Knight sequel... Wind blows the fragile leaves into a soft storm, the trees rustle as they´re yanked to the side, and the rain pummels into the soil as the blue figure dashes through the empty forest. The lanky, dark blue, golden armored hedgehog zooms towards the meeting point. ¨ I can´t believe I let myself become distracted again! I really am a bumbling doof. But no longer, I swear it! Things will change.¨ He skids to a halt as a group of other knights lurch out of the way. They all don gleaming sets of armor, only matched by the hedgehog´s own. The white hedgehog pulsates with blue psychokinetic energy, the purple chameleon is adorned with sharp ninja knives, the green crocodile is bursting with muscle, and the demented yellow doll floats in the air with a red aura. They all glare at the blue hedgehog. ¨Some timing you have, Cinos. Aren´t you supposed to be the fastest thing alive?¨ The crocodile says. ¨Yes, I am. If you throw more insults at me, any of you, then I´ll prove it again.¨ ¨There´s no need for pointless fighting!¨ The white hedgehog says. ¨We´re here for a purpose, and I didn´t travel through time just to waste it. Not again.¨ ¨Silver´s correct.¨ The purple chameleon says. ¨If our purpose is not served, then we have failed ourselves.¨ Everyone is silent. ¨ Well, where is it?¨Cinos stares untrustingly at the hovering doll. It´s eyes pierce into his soul. ¨The first key is located inside this very hill, as the legend tells it. All we must do is open the door, and find its location within the stronghold.¨ ¨ Sounds easy. Is there any special strategy to getting in?¨ Cinos asks. ¨ Of course, but you already have it.¨ Everyone looks at the blade hanging on Cinos´ back. A shining golden and crimson sword, the Lost Excaliburn. Cinos equips the weapon, allowing it to reflect the sun´s gentle glows. ¨With it, the door shall open.¨ Silver says. ¨Then let us get to it. It may take a while for the door to reawaken.¨ The chameleon says. ¨And I fear there will be guards.¨ ¨ You always worry about stuff, Espio.¨The crocodile says. ¨ You forget that we overtook an entire kingdom, and still rule it.¨ ¨ I am aware, Vector, and yet we are here alone.¨ ¨ We will call for backup once the time is right.¨ Cinos says. ¨ For now, we know what we must do. Let´s get going. I´m getting bored.¨ The knights charge down to the green hill´s base, witnessing an ancient gate built within the stone. It is decayed yellow with blue cyborg-like stripes. There is a white pedestal in which to place a sword resting in its front. Cinos steps up and shoves Lost Excalibur inside, seeing the stone light up slowly. The sword is shot out of the mechanism as the rest of the door begins to glow. Cinos catches his weapon as rumbling sounds emerge behind the group. They turn to see red and brown robotic soldiers, all brandishing bows, axes, and swords. ¨These are the ones who challenge whoever dares to enter the keys´ temples. ¨ Espio says. ¨ Most never succeed in beating them.¨ ¨But we will.¨ Cinos says. The Exiled Chosen One raises his sword. ¨Ready, Guys? This´ll be a piece of cake.¨ They meet the enemies in battle. … The mad scientist yells out as his latest and greatest creation burns as it smashes into the ocean. He sits in his battered egg pod, glaring at his own failure, again. A blue figure jumps up and lands onto the pod, laying down behind the scientist´s head. ¨Ya know, Doc, you could try a new hobby. You might be more successful at it.¨ ¨ I will never give up you annoying pest! I have almost won countless times, and I will not let you beat me! I swear it!¨ Dr. Robotnik tries to grab Sonic the Hedgehog, but of course it´s a fruitless effort. The blue hero kicks the doctor´s in the face as he leaps off of the pod and drops down towards the Emerald Coast. ¨ I was kinda hoping you´d see my way, but really, I´m not surprised.¨ Sonic says. ¨Oh you will be.¨ The doctor unsheathes a brown cased book. It has the words ¨Arthurian Legends¨ inscribed on it. ¨What´s that?¨ Sonic looks up with confusion. ¨ The thing that will finally get you out of my hair forever!¨Robotnik flips to a certain page and smiles. ¨ You keep forgetting that you have no hair. What´re you talking about now?¨ Sonic prepares himself for another battle. ¨Calm yourself you insolent rat, there will be no more battling. Only the sweet silence of your absence!¨ ¨Can you stop the poetry and just tell me already?¨ ¨ All I need to say, are these words!: âsendan mîn hettend oð ðone as nîwian â!¨ Before Sonic can utter another word, a portal opens underneath him, dropping him into a new place. ¨Not this again!¨ Sonic yells as he careens downwards. Robotnik howls with laughter. ¨See you never, Sonic the Hedgehog!¨ The portal closes as Sonic collides with the ground. Sonic has seen many fields of green, but this one is totally different. The grass is grey and withered, the trees are dark and dead. There are only motionless bodies of woodland creatures scattered around. The wind flies but only so far. ¨ Man, this is upsetting. Did something happen again? But wait, how did Eggface even manage this? I thought only Merlina could do it...¨ Sonic´s wondering is cut off by the clashing of swords and the echoes of grunts. Sonic runs towards the noise, seeing a black armored hedgehog battling a mob of robotic warriors. Sonic is put-off by the new sight, but he knows what he wants to do. He zooms ahead and homing attacks the robots, cleaning them out as if they were just cardboard. As he lands back down, the black hedgehog gasps. ¨You can´t be. King Sonic?!¨ ¨Heh, it is you, Sir Lancelot.¨Sonic dusts himself off. ¨It´s been a while, hasn´t it? What´s been going on?¨ Sonic knows that if he wants to return home, he must solve this sudden problem first. And besides, he could never turn down a chance to help. The shadow colored knight sighs as his eyes face the decaying scenery. ¨ The kingdom you entrusted to Nimue was short- lived. Our democracy was the strongest government in the land, until new enemies arrived.¨ ¨ Huh? Who is it now?¨ Sonic asks. The knight hesitates. ¨ They´re nothing but an embarrassment to this kingdom. Exiled knights who should never have returned. It was foolish of us to think all would be peaceful...¨ ¨Exiled..? I never heard about any exiled people.¨ ¨ That´s because you only ever knew about this place, Avalon. There are many other kingdoms... It´s-¨ Lancelot grunts as he bends over, cupping a hand over a large wound. Sonic steps closer as he calls out his name worriedly. ¨ We gotta get you to a doctor! Or, whatever kind of medical person you have in this time!¨ ¨It´s fine. I am a knight, I can handle it.¨ ¨I thought we decided last time that being a knight is about more than just letting yourself die. You need help.¨ ¨ But these horrid things, they´re spreading throughout our kingdom, slaughtering all they see. We must regroup and stop them.¨ Lancelot glances at the robotic bodies. ¨Whadda mean ´ regroup´?¨ ¨The Knights of the Round Table disbanded once the new government was installed. I do not know where the others are. I am trying to find them.¨ ¨ Well, I can help with that! You got any leads?¨ ¨ The only thing I know is that Sir Gawain was last heard of in the ruins near here.¨ ¨ Alright. Is there a town nearby too?¨ ¨Yes. Why?¨ ¨ That´s where we´re going first.¨ ¨ King Sonic...¨ ¨I told you, I´m not your king! We need to get you healed up before we head into battle! It´s the right thing to do.¨ Lancelot is silent. ¨ Fine, but what about a weapon for you?¨ ¨If it´s gonna help that I have one again, what about Caliburn?¨ ¨That sword has been hidden for years. The only person who would know of its location is Madame Percival. She returned it.¨ ¨ Then we´ll ask her for directions. But for now, I think a simple blacksmith´s blade will do. Can you run still?¨ ¨ Of course.¨ Sir Lancelot stands. ¨ I shall tell you more of the Exiled Ones once we reach the town.¨ He steps ahead of Sonic. ¨ Let´s see if you can keep up.¨ ¨ Heh. Some things never change. You´re on!¨ The two hedgehogs dash off into the horizon. A field´s distance away, the sounds of sword fighting can be heard. Cinos turns and sees two figures blasting past in the distance. ¨ Interesting. I´m the only one who can match Sir Lancelot.¨ Vector cuts down the last robotic foe. ¨ Ya think it´s the one?¨ ¨ I have a feeling, and if I´m right, then this trip just became a lot more interesting.¨ Cinos steps away from the group. ¨ Where are you going?¨ Silver asks. ¨ To meet that blue figure. I must know.¨ ¨And what about the key?¨ ¨ You can get it. Meet me back at the castle once you´re done. This won´t take longer than a nanosecond.¨ Cinos blasts off towards the nearby town. The exiled group mutters to themselves as they approach the opening door.

Does anyone else else feel Jason Griffith (the voice of Sonic) is holding back tears during his speech with Merlina at the end?

To everyone who says sonic has a massive ego, in this he says he's not afraid to play the bad guy, if it's for the greater good. He dosn't care what people think, he just wants to save everyone.

Holy cow I never knew there was more to this when I was younger the game ended for me at the part he defeted king Arthur. Man this ending shocked me.

Fun fact/theory: this game canonically takes place after unleashed, the beginning and ending of the game confirms this. In the Xbox version of unleashed, you can choose to promise Amy a date after the world is fixed, (and assuming this theory is correct this game confirms that saying yes to the date is cannon and the Xbox version of sonic unleashed is the definitive story) and in the beginning of this game we see sonic with two chili dogs, one for him the other probably for amy. If that doesn’t confirm it then the ending should. Amy yells at sonic for missing their date and yadda yadda you can see it at 53:32 . This is more of a theory then fact, but still interesting I guess.

Dallas just cause it’s a spin off doesn’t mean it’s not cannon, secret rings happened (note that it’s referenced in one of generations cutscenes) but when it takes place isn’t definitive. It can fit anywhere after sonic heroes from what I can see.

This game is what showed who Sonic truly is, and what he is

People hate this game, and I get that. The controls weren't for everyone, and neither was the gameplay, and you don't have to like it I respect your opinion. However, this game was a very touching story it portrayed Sonic's true personality better than the Sonic games today. Sonic maybe be cocky, and ignorant at times, but he is a true hero, he doesn't fight his foes or opponents for the glory or chivalry, but he did it because he loved the thought of wanting to help people, he cares for the environment and everyone around him even if they are foe. This is the true kind of hero I grew up with since the dreamcast days, and forever will be despite his failure in his recent games like lost world and boom, keeping running *My Blue Blur, Keep Running.*

This and Secret Rings defiantly needs a remaster. Mainly in gameplay, such interesting stories shouldn't go to waste.

This is the best and I don't regret spending almost an hour watching this masterpiece. This whole thing felt like a movie and the animation was just outstandingg !! The characters were awesome, the world-building was well thought of, and Sonic is just... wow. The songs are pretty banger too, especially when Sonic transforms into Arthur AAAAAAAA

@@mariaheichhorn6764 *weak first of all, second of all I know that Sonic is pretty strong but usually they show his legs to be strong (in the Sonic movie, Sonic himself literally stated that his legs could be considered "lethal weapons") and his hands are usually shown to be pretty weak. I'm not saying he's weak over all but he clearly skipped his arm work out days way too much lol

This game is probably the latest game to ever done Sonic's character right. He jokes around and is rebellious, yet he cares for others. He also knows when to take situations seriously. Unlike Sonic Colors or Sonic Forces where he just jokes around constantly like he's underestimating everyone he faces.

This game is one of the best! They managed to tell and amazing story with good lessons. There's humor, action and seriousness and they never take away from each other. The characterisation is on point, Sonic feels like Sonic. The way he interacts with the Knights who clearly resemble his friends is brilliant. "You look just like this Knucklehead I know." "Hey, Tails! Nah, it can't be. This is the Smithy, right?" The characters are incredible, the soundtrack is incredible, the voice acting is incredible. The sad thing is that this game marked the end of Sonic's greatest years and made way for Pontac and Graff to clown around with the franchise for 11 years.

31:39 HUNGH that segment feels badass as hell

The best part about this game is that it doesn't end after you defeat the final boss, there's a LOT of optional missions that are unlocked throughout the story, and after you complete the game.

Dang Merlina's motivation was pretty sad but I'm glad she learned from it, ah nostalgia. I remember being confused asf when I saw this as a child and now I understand 💀

Whenever I think of this game I always think of Final Fantasy meets Sonic. The style of the game also reminds me of Fire Emblem or Legend of Zelda

I grew up with this game! I still love it!!!

Dang... it's almost symbolic, seeing as this was Jason Griffith's last role as Sonic. Sonic and the Black Knight was the end of an era for Sonic the Hedgehog. Ever since Sonic Adventure, Sonic has been poignant, having a feeling of justice and even a willingness to help his enemies through emotional struggle. In Sonic Adventure, Sonic helped Chaos let go of his pain. Sonic Adventure 2, it was about letting go of revenge. Shadow the Hedgehog was about letting go of the past and moving towards the future. Sonic 06 was about learning to smile through hardship. Sonic and the Secret Rings was about overcoming desire to do the right thing. Sonic Unleashed was about taking care of the world you live in. And lastly... Sonic and the Black Knight was about accepting the end of life. Nowadays Sonic's stories have no depth. There's no meaning to them. Sonic Forces tried to replicate it, but it's hard to do when the stories since Sonic Colors have been so pathetically shallow. I place most of the blame on the writers for trying to shift the focus to memes and comedy. I can't blame Roger Craig Smith for this, but he just doesn't hold up to the range that Jason Griffith had.

Shiro Maekawa said that he doesn't like the currently stories of the Sonic games. He also said that he would like to write Sonic games again if he had the opportunity.
