1:07 The slow typing and simplistic "SHADOW" coming on the screen, the camera cut into the slow rotation with Shadow staring straight at Sonic with matching speeds. Not to mention that max in game character running speed starting out. Whoever directed this whole sequence was a genius. Truly iconic.

Hands down one of my favorite cutscenes in the Sonic franchise wish the wish Sonic was still this badass

@Starscream91 You're either trolling or legitimately stupid, Sonic Adventure 1 came before this one and it's sound mixing was way better. Even then, this is the Xbox/PC/PS3 version of adventure 2, and they didn't even fix the sound mixing here. Don't try to defend something that you know was bad. "Wasn't as easy back then" my ass, they could have simply toned down the music volume or turn up the voice volume, don't be dumb.

Shadow's voice will never be as dope as it was in this game.

You get a pretty dramatic conversation between Sonic and Shadow, And then you get a final boss which you literally can just spam the homing attack and bam, Final Boss defeated. IMO, This boss kinda sucked. (23 seconds and the fight was over, like come on man)

An artificial hedgehog uses the real the emeralds and a real hedgehog uses an artificial emerald. There’s something poetic about that.

There is something just... amazing about this scene. Yeah, I know the audio didn't exactly age well. But honestly, it doesn't bother me that much. This is the best interaction between Sonic and Shadow in the series and probably the best interaction between hero and villain in the series, too. There was something special about them both finally reaching (what they thought was) the end. And while I enjoyed their trash talk towards one another back in the prison island level, them now admitting their respect for one another while getting ready to have their final clash gave me chills. And the music, them gradually picking up speed as the conversation goes on, and knowing that the stakes are high on both ends... it just got me so amped up. And say what you will about the cheesy lines in Sonic the Hedgehog, but I think this was some of the best written dialogue on gaming, with just the right amount of cheesiness. SA2 was just something fantastic and this scene is why. Best video game rivalry in my opinion.

Another great analogy as I'm sure this rivalry between Sonic and Shadow was probably based off of Goku and Vegeta's rivalry considering how many similarities Sonic does have to Goku and Shadow to Vegeta especially since the creator of Sonic did draw a lot of inspiration from dragon Ball considering that's how super sonic came to be from Goku super Saiyan transformation

I'm just now realizing the symbolism of this scene and the game as a whole: at their first meeting, Sonic felt as if he were staring into a dark mirror of himself, the fake hedgehog. Later, when they met in Green Forest/White Jungle, Shadow turns the tables, accusing Sonic of being the pale reflection of himself, the ultimate lifeform. Finally, we come to this scene, where Sonic has just used Chaos Control to warp out of the exploding capsule with a "fake" Chaos Emerald, a technique he learned by watching Shadow, the "fake hedgehog," perform it with a "real" one. They learn here that neither of them was the faker, and both of them were the real deal. After all, the "fake emerald" was indistinguishable from the real one because it had the same wavelength and properties. Why then couldn't these two ultra-powerful hedgehogs be likewise? Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

As silly as it is I’m seeing a lot of parallels between this and jungian psychology, starting with the name Shadow lol the music in this game is brilliant as well, from the tracks with vocals in particular, live and learn as well as escape from the city invoke many an esoteric symbol, shadows ost for escaping from the jungle is called “rhythm and balance”, hell the notion of chaos control is essentially the union between Eros and logos, chaos and regularity respectively, they were wrinkling our brains with one!

Shadow: So there's more to you than just looking like m.. WHY IS THIS MUSIC SO LOUD?!! Sonic: I DON'T KNOW!

I never get tired of the delivery of “before this is over I’ll show you the true power of chaos control!” Which he does in the last story.

That scene in my opinion is the best scene in the entire sonic franchise

1:09 This line gave me chills when I played SA2.

Not sure if it was intentional, but I love the eyebrow move Sonic does at 0:32. It just adds to his confidence as a character.

Can't wait to see these 2 interrupt each other's dialouge in the next live-action film.

This game made Shadow my favorite character, but looking back on it, Sonic was pretty impressive as well. He learned Shadow’s Chaos Control on the first try (with a fake emerald no less) and avoided dying when he was supposed to.

Aside from the music being obnoxiously loud, the dialogue in this scene was all it needed to be for this interaction between arguably 2 of the most iconic rivals in video game history. I don't really consider it cheesy seeing as how Sonic is basically describing himself as a character, whom many have pointed out doesn't really go through any real changes in the first place. Just dull the volume on the BGM a bit, time the characters speaking better so it doesn't feel like they're talking over or interrupting each other, and you have a truely classic scene in Sonic game history that's hard to outdo imo.

Also should be noted a lot of the camera work like the panning opening shot, to the zoom in on the emerald, to the zoom out where they run into the void. Pretty damn good for early 3d games.

In most scenes, I prefer when characters cut over each other. It shows a sign of urgency, and when they are HERO/DARK, it makes more sense, since they are on polorized sides anyway. Shadow really doesn't care what Sonic has to say in the beginning, and Sonic is fueled by revenge when he interrupts Shadow in the forest.

Story wise Adventure 2 was one of the best Sonic stories. Throughout the game whenever Sonic and Shadow meet Shadow has much higher ground and looks down on Sonic every time because he sees Sonic as beneath him. But as the game progresss Sonic does so much from Escaping prison, defeating The Egg Gollum, getting to the Arc, and even managing to induce a Chaos control at this point when they meet Shadow is standing on equal ground with Sonic and look at him at his level because he sees Sonic as his equal finally. See subtext like that was never in meta era games or even in Dark era games when the stories were really good like Unleashed. Heck even as good as Frontiers story was it didn't have subtext like that.

These are the original voices of Sonic and Shadow, the most recent voices have nothing on these guys.

Agreed 💯. If they're planning on a SA1 remake I really hope they bring back the majority of the original voice actors. Sonic Adventure wouldn't feel right with the current cast.

The voice cast from SA2 was top tier I really miss all them and Shadow's voice specially hasn't been as good since.

I don't think the music was loud enough during that cutscene

i know the sound design is bad, but i've always loved this scene. Something about it is very well done. I think what it is is that the music is used a portrayal between the tension of sonic and shadow, because they BOTH know they did not just come here to meet up to talk. They had to fight, and the fact they both kept picking up pace at the same time with the music shows that they both knew exactly what the other person was thinking. I think this does a very good job and does well showing what rivalry looks like despite the fact they didnt know each other for that long.

This has to be in the 3rd movie

2nd best scene in sonic history right behind when sonic and shadow go super at the end of SA2

Imma say it again!! Greatest sonic game easily!! The speed, the plot, the characters easily the best sonic game to me! This has to be the greatest soundtrack in a sonic game ever

Did you guys know that when Sonic says "Talk about being stubborn and full of surprises" in Sonic Heroes in the pre Team Dark/Sonic battle cutscene, he's referring to his technical final conversation with Shadow here, before they face off on the ARK.

One of the best lines in video game history!

Amazing how they both start off with a friendly conversation, and then they both remember their objectives. Sonic knows who’s truly evil and who’s being used for a pawn.

We want this in Sonic 3

I’ll cry if this is in Sonic 3.

The writers for those movies are actually good and huge fans of the franchise, I actually have high hopes for once.

"I see. But you know, I can't let you live. Your adventuring days are coming to an end!" Man, I freaking love those lines! That makes Shadow so bad ass!

I haven't grew up with this game at all but I will admit, this scene looks so cool. Ignoring the production value, I like how Sonic and Shadow are portrayed and the build up to it was amazing. I wish future Sonic games have moments like this in them.

This scene always gets me because it proves that Tails was able to create a fake Chaos emerald with powers that nearly rival the original. Now imagine he created seven more of those

It matches the wavelengths and powers but not really the full capabilities. It can do chaos control but I doubt much else

God if they recreate this in the next Sonic movie, I can die. happy

I can't wait to see how they will recreate this iconic scene in the Sonic 3 movie, but with better acting and direction. It will be iconic.

Despite the numerous flaws and embarrassing way this game aged, 1:07 is still the hardest intro to a boss fight Sonic has ever seen.
