A pretty cool trick you can do is getting Shadow's flame ring early. You just need to spin dash and jump with right timing to get enough distance to close the gap without air shoes

Ah, I did that "spin dash jump" trick too when I was trying to get the hang of playing SA2 again after so many years. :>

I do have to say something about the Air Necklace. Without that necklace, you can still get through Cannon’s Core, but you can’t find the Lost Chao or clear the Hard Mode in the Death Chamber because there are no air bubbles in the water you have to swim through as Knuckles in the Death Chamber!

I had no idea about the air necklace as a kid and I beat the Knuckles section of the Death Chamber without the air necklace. There ARE air bubbles you can reach. They are hard to spot and your timing has to be perfect. Meaning you have to smash that swim button to get Knuckles to the next air bubble and know where you are going ahead of time. It took countless attempts and retries but it is indeed possible. Hard mode may not have air bubbles though so you could be right there.

I was an Adventure kid (with no Internet) and didn't realise at the time air bubbles were an established Sonic universe feature. I died countless times before getting the air necklace.

Sonic's magic hands upgrade befuddles me. It's a cool concept but the only time I can think of where there's any serious use for it is the artificial chaos at the start of Sonic's Cannon Core. And even then, it's just as reasonable to leap off the edge, homing attack, then leap back to safety. I'm not just talking for normal gameplay either. About 9 years ago i 180 emblemed the GC version of the game, and I don't ever recall using it past that one point.

Yah, the only time I ever used it was on the hard mission of cannons core when there are 2 of them you need to destroy. But even then I don’t always use it

There are instances in Crazy Gadget and Final Rush where they can come in handy. Other instances too for the extra missions or if you’re trying to get the highest score you can in some stages. If you mid Shadow to have it, there are other places where it can be useful
