1st of all... this is a classic Taylor Swift track 5 Next, THANK YOU, finally someone who appreciates the lyric "now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life" as it is such a powerful and yet sad and tragic thought. She's trapped in this relationship, and can't or even worse, won't leave. And not sure if you caught it, but she starts and ends the song with the same 5 words, it's a vicious circle.

Ha, honesty is honesty but I feel you. I just didn't like those songs as much. I wonder how differently I would feel about them had I heard this stuff first but oh well, my perspective is what it is and whatever bias I have no is here until it is not. I think I would feel about the way I did because my reasons for the reactions were mostly from things about the song/music/lyrics. Same reasons I love this work so much more. It gives me a much more in depth opinion where I certainly appreciate Taylor and her music/fans much more but I bet those songs would still hit me in a similar way to how they did the first time.

The most devastating part of it is that the character doesn't leave the partner. They just continue to 'sit and watch', hoping that one day their love will be reciprocated. Also, I absolutely love the way Taylor says 'but you tolerate it'. There's so much pent up anger and frustration in these few words, it hits so strongly... Especially in contrast to the previous, very soft and full of love lyrics. I think the harmonies perfectly reflect these contrasting feelings going through the character's mind: devotion, depression, spite.

  • @JSteezy

I noticed the intensity in that line as well! Very frustrated, hurt, vulnerable. Like you can kind of hear tears under the way it is said. I didn't comment on it but I did notice that during my recording. It is a very good detail.

this song had to grow on me, musically (the lyrics got me from the beginning); the 5/4 time threw me off but I have come to believe that's purposeful- the theme of the song is someone sort of sitting on the edge of their seat, waiting for the other shoe to drop in the sense that they don't feel stable in the relationship. I think the timing of the music feeds into that feeling about not being on stable ground, if that makes sense? nice reaction!

  • @JSteezy

It totally does! I think the time signature has a disorienting effect of some kind and that can definitely play into the vibe in various ways. It can be a little weird to get into a song with an odd time signature when you aren't ready for it. Music is literally just time and sound. Sometimes I think about that and it trips me out how as an art form, it is totally invisible and somewhat imaginary.

I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to this one because she's just going for the jugular. The sound matches so well the way the words make me feel, for me! And the wierd time signature makes the delivery surprising somehow Her new/old song All Over Me is another example of nice harmonies (although in that case it's another singer providing the backing vocal, and it's more recognisable as a harmony as opposed to the layering you were talking about here!)

Slipped me right into my daydream state that helps bring my imagination to life. I know that must not make sense, but music has ALWAYS been a BIG part of my life due to escapism. Music that can get me to think, dream, sing - Help me process things is what I enjoy and she did and still does that for me - kind of like Simon and Garfunkel (highlight: Paul Simon) or Tom Petty. The fact you even know Miles Davis is awesome. I did a 20 minute speech on John Coltrane thinking everyone had to know who he was -- noooopppe, not one hand raised. Haha yeah it really is a very tragic and sad song. Sad place to be. And a cursing Taylor totally felt forced to me. Her pop mainstream image from a distance, especially maybe 5-7 years ago was this clean and goodie good country girl gone pop a little bit. It just felt a little too much like going against that or something. I don't know...I wasn't ready for it haha. Feels more natural now and I respect this music on this album a lot. I didn't really respect a lot of the older mainstream hits as much. They mostly just felt like any other pop song at the time. This album really sets a different bar that is unique for music but also her. I really applaud it.

J.Steezy The singles were mend to be played in the radio with a catchy chorus. Maybe that's why. Her deep songs always are on her albums. Even in her first ones. Like Soon you'll get better on Lover or All too well on Red. The older fans often say her more serious songs are on her albums. And it's true. I like her singles for what they are. Some singles have a deeper meaning too. Like Blank Pace wich is a reaction to how the media portrayed her at that time. Just Me! was too much for me. A little too goofy. I was afraid about the album but it didn't disappoint me. It's nice to see you liking her new stuff. I mean you don't have to like everything she does. ;)

Her words at that point are so cutting and devastating, it elevated it and I love the song. I agree below champagne problems. I like it because I appreciate the lyrics, the metaphors, the literary references, the use of diction, the word choice, how she puts words and phrases together I find to like on this track very much. As a song, it is ok. I'm more interested in the word use and storytelling on this track than the melody and / or instrumentation. So, you haven't decided to do ATW yet (Grammy performance vs album lyric video). Same chord progression. Its a storytelling song, but not as complex as CP, but a vividly written story. This one uses more metaphors and is wonderfully written, ATW is wonderfully written in a different way, you can picture the scene, the weather, the time of year, her use of colors, its a wonderful story. the reason you may get requests for ATW is that it is considered to be, by critics and fans, the best song she has ever written. It hasn't been dethroned yet. Musically, it is not complicated and probably not interesting (chord progression, etc). But, lyrically this is the best song she's ever written. Putting melody and lyrics together.... this is her best. Its not a complicated song, it is very straightforward with the story. But, she got this one right and people want you to react to it because it is everyone's (99.999%) #1 song, written when she was 21? but, if you do listen to it, you have to follow the story, and not be too critical about the instrumentation because that is not the purpose of that song, it is supposed to be simplistic in order to highlight the story.
