Its a bit diff for Rhenzy Feliz, the va for Camilo, idk if he voice acted in different movies but I heard he didnt have vocal training and sounds amazing in WDTAB, wish he got a solo song of his identity crisis struggle, he's only helpful if he's someone else

3:26 honestly as a Southeast Asian, this song, and the whole movie itself hits close to home. I felt more represented in this film than Raya and I'm not even Colombian. Heck, even in some way, We Don't Talk About Bruno is kind of relatable because I actually have an uncle that is ostracized by most of his family (his siblings).

Legit I have an uncle that we used to see at reunions or by visiting them at home but now it’s like he’s disappeared from our (extended family’s) lives and its so weird to know that ill probably never see him again, even though it felt so normal to have him around before, I guess there was always a tension that I never picked up on. Its sad to think that I’ll probably end up forgetting about him because i only have good memories of him.

Me realizing I am that uncle…

I'm Hispanic born and raised and I've discussed with my Asian friends how similar our cultures are. We put a lot of value into family. Our families are large and always involved in our lives. My non Hispanic non Asian friends couldn't understand why Mirabel was so attached to her family despite everything; why she didn't just walk out. Leaving our family is like ripping out a vital part of who we are. Edit: I only mentioned Hispanics and Asians because that's what Joel mentioned. There's plenty of other cultures were family is very important.

As someone who is asian(South east) and loved and related to this movies themes of this movie, I have noticed these similarities too. The notion that mirabel could just leave her family makes me laugh. For us it's much harder to leave our family. Friends are treated as a distraction but family is treated as your life soul and only constant to try to leave that requires alot of strength which most of us don't have.

i am white, and no i won’t understand the societal pressure of how incredibly important family is. but i am the oldest of my siblings. if i were to walk out, they wouldn’t have me. my youngest sister would devastated. my other sister would get very depressed. my parents, mainly my mom cause i didn’t have a father until i was 5, from a young age counted on me to be there as a role model and help my siblings grow up. but also if i walked out, i’d have no stability in my life, financial or emotional.

Surface Pressure legit had me bawling my eyes out, and I see many other KZreadrs get emotional when they hear it. It's relateable, it's sad, it's hopeless and at the same time it's such a catchy tune

As a Hispanic person, to answer if we get pressure from parents to do well, I think it’s more so an immigrant parent thing. I’m the oldest child and grandchild on both sides of my family, and I’m a first generation child, so I was pretty much made to be like Isabella and Luisa, to be perfect and shoulder all the family bs while growing up. I love my younger siblings but they will never understand how much my parents hurt me emotionally growing up. Things with my parents are better now, but that pressure from not just my parents, but basically my entire family really got to me, which is why Encanto really got to me when I first watched it.

Yup definitely an immigrant thing. I am Asian and a lot of Asian feel the same. The pressure to be a doctor, get a good job while not caring about our happiness. Same with Mexican, so much pressure to take care of the family and parent and get a good job etc (this is what a lot of Mexican people tell me since there a lot of them in California)

In many places, including Latin America, the pressure on older siblings in particular is quite complicated. In the movie, Luisa is not the oldest, but she has the same pressure (The dynamics change when you are the first grandchild)

Yeah but even if you aren’t the first born child, doesn’t mean the second born doesn’t get pressure, if it was just two children, then the first will have pressure while the other not so much unless a third child is born

I'm of African descent and a first born and, having met and discussed generational trauma/pressure put on us by family members with people from Hispanic and Asian descent, our childhoods were scarily similar. It was like we shared the subsection of a Venn diagram

My mom and dad had different reactions to the film. Mom did understand what it ment and she tries to avoid talking about the film in a deeper meaning. But at least she isn't afraid to talk about Luisa and understands why I relate. She was also parentified as a child. As for my dad, he proposally missed the messaged of Luisas song. Even after my brother pointed all the attention to me by saying Luisa is the OLDER sister of Mirabel. Lin based Luisa off of his OLDER sister. Baiscally trying to put his attention to the fact that I'm the oldest sister. He said "So she saved the Titanic?" at the end of the song. He thought the song was about Luisa being a super hero and saving people with her power. I'm 100% sure he understood and he's just acting. At the end of the film, he understood the message and spoke deeply about it. But he still claims the movie as witchcraft so........... 50/50 for him.

She tends to minimize her problems. The “Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” line makes me wonder if she knows she’s minimizing it. Like, yeah these problems are big and scary and out of my control, but if I tell myself it’s not that bad then I can handle it a little better; but that doesn’t cancel out the reality that she’s carrying the world on her shoulders

She says the lyrics “Can I somehow preserve this” when she fixes Mirabel’s glasses! It’s showing how she wants to protect her I love this song so much

“Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks” is a line that always chokes me up. I find it so relatable not just because I’ve never been allowed to break down and cry no matter what was happening but also because my sister was always so patient with me and felt she couldn’t express her pain because of mine. (Just to clarify our parents are very great and supportive but we both suffered through abusive teachers and authority figures)

As a daughter from an Asian household with a lot of Spanish influence, pressure, especially when it's from your family, is on a very different level. This song made me cry the first time that I heard it because it's just sooooo real. PS. In case you're wondering what Asian country has a lot of Spanish influence, it's the Philippines.

I'm not Colombian, but I am from Honduras. In Latam, parents encourage and maybe even pressure their children to be better and more successful than themselves. Three generations back, it wasn't uncommon for people to only have primary level education. Two generations back, most people stuck to high school ed. With our parents, college level education was a must. Now, a lot of us feel pressured to keep the self-improvement cycle going. It's pretty common for parents to say, "I worked hard so you could have a better life than myself", to their children. That sticks with us, and the second we feel like we're not making the most out of what our parents gave us through their own hard work and effort, a lot of use might end up feeling worthless or lost. That's why Encanto, a movie celebrating latino culture is about generational trauma. Our grandparents and parents mean well, but that doesn't mean that we don't feel the pressure that Luisa, Mirabel, or even Isabela feel. We all tend to have a natural instilled fear of not living up to expectations or being enough

i was thinking on how to comment about this pressure they put on us but your comment explained it best! I'm from Colombia but I think this can be easily seen in any family from Latinamerica. In most cases, our parents made enormous efforts so we can have a better life and succeed. However, since our countries are in development and the risk of falling into poverty or being at a civil war is greater, they also fear for our safety and survival when they stop being around, so while pushing us far from those situations they put a lot of pressure on us. I also think that such fear comes from their own experiences of what they have seen, heard or lived, and in some cases it's almost like they get really scared for their children to live those same things and put high expectations on us to avoid such scenarios.

Eg the way i dress, the jobs i take, education path, who i marry etc. But hell my cousins and i have flipped the table fked up all their expectations. But its ok for us cuz we don't get in much trouble. But for others its harder

Luisa is the representation of the eldest child as she's also the eldest and the strongest. Her entire character is about the eldest and the strongest having to carry the family burden like most eldest children do in families

Yup, as a Mexican American, my household is very Hispanic. I think majority of Latin family’s can relate to this movie. Generational Trauma is unfortunately a common thing in Latin families. I also relate to Luisa, being an older sister to a lot of siblings and cousins, you tend to look after majority of the kids and work as a third parent. 🇲🇽❤️

Being the eldest of the family, this song really hits hard through my soul.

I've watched the movie so many times I can't count anymore and I've yet to sing along and not cry 😭 when her voice changes deeper, it sounds like when I'm trying to sing while crying so I'd like to think that Luisa is also tearing up throughout this song too. So emotional.

I watched Encanto and Tick, Tick Boom on the same flight 😂. That was a lot of LMM influence for one afternoon. Not that I'm complaining. I'm a Hamilton fan. Definitely sensed those LMM vibes during Surface Pressure. It evokes a similar intense feeling as hearing George Washington's part in Right Hand Man, specifically seeing it live with how forward the bass line is in that mix. Not to mention the whole singing/rapping cadence and talking about being "of service" is very Hamilton-esque.

i'd love to see joel reviewing encanto as a whole and ranking the songs, because it's a def a movie that has a lot of divided opinion even if people generally really liked it or loved it. it would be a slight change in content but i always enjoy watching reviews, unless it's overtly negative. it's just fun seeing others opinions on movies etc.

Also to add on to that comment with Luisa taking care of Mirabel, you notice the only time she's not is during that bridge where she's talking about shaking her burdens and just relaxing, which includes letting Mirable float around, adjust her glasses, pick up on the horse - just letting her sort herself out. Mirabel is always behind her. Honestly, this movie is a masterpiece of symbolism particularly with the clothing.

Watching this with my family hit differently, my mom and I were just watching this and glancing at each other.

It's always interesting seeing Joel finding the chords on the piano just by listening to a song!! He's such a music genius!! ❤️👏🏻

I saw someone pointed this out somewhere so credit all to that person. So basically what they said is that the reason why she suddenly dance with the donkey is because she saw how terrified her sister, Mirabel is. So she did the dance with the donkey to add more funny-ness I guess? Like to ease her sister. I just think it's a cute little details people missed because they got distracted to the dance and that's the point, to distract people (specially kids). So yea that's all I wanted to share!

I think the most relatable and “hard hitting” moment is the part where she goes from dreams of being able to relax and peacefully dance around in it clouds but the boulders come down and she catches them and sings that the pressure “never stops” and is looking at Mirabel with this defeated look. I’m sure most people have been in that moment. You struggle so long and fight so hard and look around to see so little progress that you think that your the struggle that has completely taken over your life and is crushing you underneath it is endless. You’ll never make it through, it will “never stop”.

I won’t be surprised if it goes to the James Bond songs, since the academy loves to give Oscar’s to those songs that aren’t all that inventive.

This is my favorite Encanto song! The very first time I ever heard it it just really caught me in the feels

I’m part Colombian also!

A big part of this movie that is not talked about enough is how it's applicable to the immigrant experience in general, which is why I think that it is so similar to the Asian American experience.

5:22 you mentioned how it's funny to dance to a number about anxiety. As an older sister myself, this is how I interpret it: no matter how bad I feel about a bad situation, I always try to make sure the people around me (particularly my sister) feel reassured. I try to be strong and I try to make her laugh so that she can smile when times are tough. But inside, I'm hurting too

I am Colombian and I feel so happy to see you reacting to Surface Pressure! :D :D :D It's probably my favorite song out of all of them (the entire soundtrack is awesome). Regarding the pressure we feel from our parents, that definitely applies to us Colombians and I might dare to say most families in Latinamerica have the same type of dynamic. In this song she is also talking about the pressure we feel from "carrying" our family's problems like we are responsible from our family's wellbeing. That's why she says "And see if she can handle every family burden". I do agree that it is definitely something everyone can relate to, no matter where they come from. Much love from Colombia!

I loved all the songs from Encanto, but Surface Pressure and We don't talk about Bruno are my all time fav's! Good job picking up all the little production details! Next can you react to Enemy by Imagine dragons and J.I.D from Arcane? That show's soundtrack was incredible! They even got Sting to do a song! There was also an epic Rap song in one of the episodes (it was called Dynasties and Dystopia)!!!

After the "We Don't Talk about Bruno" video, people recommended listening to "Surface Pressure" in that video's comments so I did. I do like that song better, probably because of the theme.

This song is so fricking upbeat but its still able to bring a tear in my eye, its so good.

The attention to detail of Roomie is very good, I learned new things to the song that I didn’t even noticed in the first place

Well I hope Joel sees this as the Oldest singer in the world and the Guinness World Record holder has sadly passed away today. Rest in Peace to Lata Mangeshkar she was the Nightingale of India and the biggest voice in the country on behalf of this i hope Joel should make a video based on her songs 🙏
