“Rain Falling from the Roof,” composed by and performed with my dear friend Wu Tong 吳彤. Here’s his story of the music. #songsofcomfort #songsofchange #SDG3 #SDG12 Silkroad
"There is a story from the the Northern Song Dynasty, where a novice monk asks a renowned Zen master about the meaning of Buddhism. The master points to the raindrops falling from the eaves of a roof. The novice monk, after being perplexed for a long time, suddenly experiences an epiphany.
It was during a rainstorm that I first read this story. At that time, the entirety of humankind was dealing with the trials of the coronavirus pandemic. Upon hearing the sound of the falling raindrops, I was reminded that people depend upon peaceful coexistence with each other and with Mother Nature to live in true harmony. No one exists in isolation.”

This video was originally released on August 14, 2020, as part of Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsOfComfort project, which was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide comfort in a time of anxiety and fear. The project inspired thousands of people around the world to upload their own songs of comfort in the months that followed.

For you guys who don't know the instrument Mr. Wu Tong playing: It's 笙; Sheng in maestro Yo-Yo Ma and Wu Tong's nation, or Shou in my language, Japanese. It's one of the few and truly unique traditional instruments in Far east, which can plays multiple pipes simultaneously, like pipe organ or bagpipes, and can generate pretty unique chords. Those chords are so unique in fact that there's an anecdote that 笙 at Paris Expo 1889 from Japan inspired young Debussy to eventually write his unique works. If you get interested in 笙 and want to hear more of it, there are great videos by our maestro Hideki Togi, professional traditional Japanese music player😘 kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5dpu6ySk5rJl5s.html

@@johnhankswjh692 Yes, it is definitely from China, but historically China did so much influence over Far east that basically all of our Far east countries share long-standing cultural traditions with China. This is exactly one of them. And for true original Japanese traditional instruments... it's kinda difficult. For example Shamisen actually originates from Okinawan Sanshin, which actually originates from Chinese Sanxian... I mean, something like Kokiriko could be a genuinely true original Japanese traditional instrument, could it?

Breathtaking. "No one exists in isolation." There is truth in that. Perhaps the wisdom this pandemic offers is that in isolation, we may find ourselves united in ways we were not before. Isolation can occur even in numbers, within our own minds or hearts. The gift of being compelled to isolate ourselves as we have is the opportunity we've been given to evaluate the true gift of our unity as humans, as *beings* experiencing the physical realm in harmony, *together*. Thank you for this breathtaking piece of music, played together in a way that wouldn't have happened without the wise offering of "isolation".

All unanimously agreeing that this song is beautiful. These beautiful and wonderful instruments would stay mute until a brilliant engineer uses his tools to bridge us together via music. The tools being emotions, skills, and experience, all wrapped in the inner man to express his dialogue through song. Sounds of heaven! Thank you for sharing. This is the first time I’ve seen and heard of a Shen instrument. Two masters of two different instruments are making amazing sound of the Far East Heaven as I close my eyes and envision how one would be like. I can’t get tired from listening to it. 🙏

@@barbarawarren9443 The poem was written by famous poet Li Qingzhao in Song dynasty " To the tune of slow, slow strain 声声慢“, very sad, sentimental and beautiful. Do you want me sent you the poem here or you google it?

There is no literal word that has existed or I think ever will exist that can describe the feeling I get from this performance to its fullest. I'm just so grateful that I can enjoy something so simple yet complex and loving. I am truly dumbstruck and in awe. Whenever I listen to this, my worries seem to be washed away from the rain that falls off of my roof.

    前半部分宛如孤寂的鸟儿在空谷独响,画面幽冷凄凉,中间提琴的加入,仿若看到了空谷的另外一面,空谷不空,有响有和,回声悠悠,和声扬扬
