@@scatton61 Even Kate herself probably feels the same about 'Wuthering Heights' now. It's like being embarrassed about immature photos of yourself as a teenager, 'What was I thinking going out like that?' I'm sure she was grateful for the break through at the time, but she took as much ridicule for it as she did praise. She has moved on. I think that song is like introducing someone new to David Bowie with 'The laughing gnome', hardly representable.

This song has been credited by many people for changing their minds about committing suicide (including Elton John, who said it saved him from drug overdose). Peter Gabriel was inspired to write this song after looking at pictures of families living in the "dust bowl" during the 1930's depression era, and seeing the desperation and hopelessness in their eyes. He first asked Dolly Parton to sing the duet with him, but she declined. Gabriel then asked his good friend (and fellow musical genius) Kate Bush to do it. Producer Daniel Lanois said that when Kate came into the studio to record her part everyone there was awe-struck, that they all felt like an angel had come down from heaven to sing for them. Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite artists, but in my opinion it's Kate Bush that really makes this song magical. You should really explore her music, there is just no one like her. A true innovator and pioneer for women in the music industry, she is incredibly influential and highly respected. Another note of trivia, bass extraordinaire Tony Levin was trying the find the right sound for his bass on this track, but just couldn't get the sound he wanted. He happened to have his baby girl's diaper bag with him in the studio, and right before the recording, he stuffed a diaper under his bass strings, and got that great muted sound that he had been looking for.

Great Tony Levin story, will listen to anything he plays on. Been a King Crimson fan since beginnings, since before Tony, his playing with Liquid Tension Experiment was great, and studio work for so many great musicians. He's a bassist's bassist, very approachable when playing smaller venues.

The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under the premiership of Margaret Thatcher. He composed lyrics about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement.

This song was us 25+ years ago. Husband put out of work during a recession..we had a mortgage and 2 small boys. He was over qualified or considered too old at mid 30’s ( meaning too expensive for his experience in industry)when applying for countless jobs. It was agony watching him lose confidence and slowly sink into depression as he felt a failure. This struggle carried on and off over 5 years. We got through and became modestly successful enough to keep a lovely home and put our boys through university. To anyone struggling, just take things a day at a time. It will come right in the end. If things aren’t right now, then it’s not the end. Love each other, persevere, don’t be too proud to lean on friends and family. Our life started to change after a phone call late one evening. ❤️

Wuthering Heights can be a risky introduction to Kate Bush’s work. The high pitched wailing has scared off a few reactors who didn’t know the context of the song. There are gentler introductions like the other songs you mentioned. Best they first listen to those before venturing into the ‘out there’ stuff.

Kate Bush is a very creative British artist. In 1978, She became the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song and in 2014 also became the first female artist in history to have eight albums simultaneously in the UK charts

A pair of astonishing artists. Love his work with Genesis('Firth of Fifth', 'Carpet Crawlers', 'Supper's Ready') and solo('Biko', 'Modern Love'). I personally have an especial fondness for and bond with her fourth album 'The Dreaming', the first, iirc, recorded using a Fairlight music computer, again, iirc, at Peter Gabriel's own studio several years before this: the title track, 'Them Heavy People', 'Suspended In Jaffa' and 'Pull Out the Pin' are among my faves. If you get to that last one, you might consider pairing it with Billy Joel's 'Goodnight Saigon', solely on the basis of subject matter. Kate has rarely toured or even performed much in public, but if you can, check out her live performance from 1979, the 'Tour of Life' at the Hammersmith Odeon, a tour-de-force combining music, dance, costumes and theatrics. I remember finding it on TV in the late 80s-early 90s and my late father joining me in watching it and sharing my profound awe and enjoyment of her versatility, vision, musicality and overall top-tier artistry. Also listen for 'Wow.'

These two collab'd on a few songs, all great. Kate Bush though is a hugely successful stand alone artist. There's no one like her, she's unique and her lyrics go deep. You liked her voice? So start with Wuthering Heights, which put her on the map. Then go from there. I love what you guys are doing, keep it going 💜

You must really react to Kate Bush, who I've followed from the start when she had a massive hit in the UK and huge impact elsewhere (sadly not in America at the time) with her debut single "Wuthering Heights" in 1978. There's an interesting story about how that song was chosen to be her first single, but I will mention when you get round to reacting to it. Oh BTW there are two versions of the official music video for the song, I prefer version 1 since that was the version that was first broadcast by the BBC, although version 2 inspired a worldwide annual event called "The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever". In terms of singles (after Wuthering Heights), I would suggest "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", "Hammer Horror", "Wow", "Babooshka", "Army Dreamers", "Breathing", "Running Up That Hill", "Cloudbusting", "Hounds of Love", "This Woman's Work". The next three are a bit different and all appear on her album "The Dreaming" which of all Kate's albums is the one that I listen to the most they are: "Sat in Your Lap", "Suspended in Gaffa" and "The Dreaming". Kate's albums are also worth listening to in release order because you can see how she progresses but also Kate is fearless in tackling difficult subjects that other artists might avoid, some of which did end up being released as official singles, but others feature on her albums. On her wikipedia page Kate is described as an English singer, songwriter, musician, dancer and record producer. To that I would also add video director and of course Kate was heavily involved in the production, conception and the direction of the only two times she has appeared in live concert tours, although the second one "Before the Dawn" had 22 performances at the same venue, due to the significant amount of staging that was involved. I was extremely lucky to get tickets to one of those performances since tickets for all 22 sold out in under 15 minutes. So I hope that you both have an enjoyable time reacting to the magical and magnificent Kate Bush!

This ballad is about a desperate man, unemployed, that his wife is trying to prevent from sinking. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe feelings of isolation and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement.

People my age and older they don't know how to work with too much technology, I do truly believe that if you fail at something you must try again, don't be a quitter. When I was in Nursing School I failed a quiz, it wasn't a major test or anything but I had never made an F in my life and to walk away with an F just made me dig in harder. I graduated at the top of my class.
