Everything about this video is perfection - from the video itself which, if restored from the original, has been done marvellously well and with great skill and looks visually stunning, to the performance of Leonid Kharitonov at his VERY best and which has never been bettered by anyone before or since! Not only is he quite beautiful to look at, but his expressive face and voice captures all that is most appealing about the Russian spirit, indomitable, strong, not easily crushed. I think this is only matched by his singing of The Ballad about Russian Boys, especially the recording from the 7th November 1966 TV show which is also on this channel. In this, Leonid, the choir and the orchestration are all so perfect that you can understand why the audience gave a spontaneous standing ovation at the end.

Эта песня приобрела новый смысл после обработки руководителем ансамбля Александровым. В исполнении Шаляпина , смысл песни сводился в величии духа русского человека, русского характера. Русскому человеку ни почем ни какие вызовы. В этом исполнении указана на несокрушимую мощь страны, России, СССР. Это был посыл капиталистическим странам. Что бы, не возникали лишние мысли в дурных головах.

Such a rich baritone voice which clearly expresses masculinity and strength. The love and respect in which the Russian people possessed for their homeland is quite admirable.

This is the song of boatmen-workers pulling barges on the Volga river. But in fact, it is about overcoming difficulties. If something doesn't work out, you need to push again. And then again and again. And the power of the spirit will win. The main thing is not to give up, and go forward.

That's the spirit of these older Soviet songs. I think that's why I find the Red Army Choir so compelling, even though I detest the political state they are meant to glorify. Even Russian classical music bleeds with a general feeling of unwavering perseverance. The result of this mentality can sometimes be brutish and boneheaded, but it's inspiring to hear nonetheless.

To me personally this amazing song don’t just represent the Volga boatman but the whole of mighty Russia. First heard this choir in Malaysia in the 80s on a cassette album hahaha.....ever since then this song to me represents Russia. Powerful, resilient, full of human spirit and a little melancholy:)

Watching not only the great Leonid Kharitonov in his prime, but the entire choir's intensity, power and pride brought tears to my eyes :,-)

Th0ughtf0rce Same here. I only recently discovered Mr Kharitonov, but I already love his voice and expressions. I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes while singing along. Russian Folkmusic is basically one of the primary reasons why I want to learn Russian. It’s such a beautiful language.

This song and its delivery is so full of emotion that it makes me want to cry. Thank you all.

I saw this choir when they came to Australia many years ago , but did not really appreciate then the awesome voice Leonid had at the time , guess timing has much to say in appreciation of music . Now , today, I would be awed by his splendid voice and the masterful talent he had..and still has thanks to his son posting his father's music.

Rest in peace, Leonid Kharitonov. I somehow wish there were covers of his songs in memoriam towards this great man! I feel like in the comments, there mostly are people around the age of 25 - 40 - I'm 18 years old and I love this man for what he has done. He is one of few reasons for me to learn russian. Yet, having such powerful and beautiful voice is but a great dream to me.

Love this song! Brings back my childhood. We sang this song in school when I was in about the 4th grade in TN. When I tell Americans this they look at me in disbelief. I am so thankful for the Lady who exposed me to this and other music.

We sang it in school too, in the Netherlands. It was the favourite song of our class, we loved it much more than the children's songs. But we may have sung it too loud sometimes...This version is epic!
