Song of Carthage - Epic Roman Music
Музыка
Music & vocals by Farya Faraji. Please note that this isn’t reconstructed period music, only modern music using Ancient Roman instruments and aspects of their music theory. I especially wanted to emulate the high degree of chromaticism found in works if the era such as Mesomedes’ songs, with the melody switching between the Dorian Diatonic, Phrygian Diatonic, and Lydian Chromatic modes. The instruments are ancient lyres, aulos, askaulos and cymbals. The melody uses reconstructed Classical pronunciation and adheres to the Latin stress rule dictated by the long vs short vowel distinction in the language.
Lyrics in Latin:
A marī usqu’ad mare, rēgnāmus!
A marī usqu’ad mare, rēgnāmus!
Audīte Rōmānī, Saguntum captum est!
Audīte Rōmānī, Saguntum captum est!
Cēterum autem cēnseō
Carthāginem esse dēléndam!
Carthāgō dēlénda est!
O Inimīce, o Carthāgō,
O Hánnibal, hic et nunc, audī!
Hic manēbimus optimē!
Cēterum autem cēnseō
Carthāginem esse dēléndam!
Carthāgō dēlénda est!
Urbī ferro flammāque minatus est,
Haec ōlim meminisse iuvābit,
Vade, Carthāgō, hic mare nostrum est!
Ave! Pater Rōmule!
Et dominābitur a marī usque ad mare, et a flūmine usque ad terminōs terrae!
English translation:
From sea to sea, we rule,
Hear ye Romans, Saguntum has fallen!
And it is my belief,
That Carthage should be destroyed,
Carthage must be destroyed!
O ennemy, O Carthage,
O Hannibal, here and now, listen!
Here we shall stand most excellently,
And it is my belief,
That Carthage should be destroyed,
Carthage must be destroyed!
The City is threatened with fire and sword,
One day, we shall look back on this day and smile,
Away Carthage! This is our sea!
Hail, father Romulus,
His dominion shall extend from sea to sea,
And unto the ends of the World!
Carthage must be destroyed!

Militarily speaking, Rome is known for two things asides their armour and weapons: The sheer anger and spite they feel at their enemies. This song does an amazing job conveying this, between the modes used, the lyrics and the seemingly very motivated percussion man who is absolutely hammering the instruments.

CARTHAGO DELENDA EST!
A member of Roman Italian allies also known as "Socii" is freed by Hannibal. He asks "Why do you set me free, but not the sons of Rome?" Afterwards, he answers. "I came here to wage war against Rome and only Romans on your behalf. So you are free to rule your land." The young Latin man points at the sky and asks him. "O, great Hannibal. Do you see the sky?" The Punic commander, now curious, nods lightly. It is then that the member of Socii, proclaims. "Then pray to your gods, commander of Kard-Hadasht, that the fires you have spread over Italia, do not reach your doorstep in the upcoming future."

We definitely need Farya to do a defiant Carthaginian reply, possibly by the great Hannibal Barca himself.

Farya has given us our daily thought of Rome today with this banger
I love the 'r' alliteration between mari - mare - regnamus - romani. It sounds so musical :)
I love this song, especially for the musical background, as it reminds me of the epic deeds of Scipione the African, one of the founding fathers of the Empire of Rome in the Mediterranean, from the homeland that I share with him and of which I am proud, my dear Italy. 💪🇮🇹

Got to listen to this while playing Rome: total war as the Scipii.
When I see a Faraji's notification, I should hear the new no matter what I'm busy with... and when I'm relaxed, I listen to absorb the joy and greatness.
The best way to explain my love for your music is that it has the feeling that everything is off, and so foreign and it’s profoundly refreshing, there really isn’t any music out there like this
This is fabulous! Very creative. I think the hearts and souls of the ancients are still alive in all of us today.
Glad to see someone making this kind of music in 2023...

I have to thank you for the Herculean labour you have done in this channel, your passionate commitment in resurrecting the epic and the soul of ancient civilizations and folk traditions is astonishing! I absolutely fell in love with your music and your videos, that enriched my awareness about the complexity of Mediterranean and Eastern music traditions! This piece is no expection, and it is a shame that we have nothing left of the Punic music, because I think that a simphony themed to Hannibal would have been Awesome. A clash of Roman, North-African, Gaulish and Hispanic sounds and swords throughout the Italian peninsula.
