Got to meet Sonequa at Dragon Con. Basically, off-camera she's the same amazing person

Really?!? That's awesome to hear! Even though she's playing a character, it's always seems that there a pieces of her within them -- even on The Walking Dead and stuff.
Sonequa was awesome in TWD, and even better as Michael Burnham in Discovery ... LOVED her relationship with Michelle Yeoh as Philipa Georgiou
Technically speaking, Sonequa's character is the 2nd black female captain shown in Star Trek. Madge Sinclair is the first black actress to play a captain in Star Trek history (on any screen). Ms Sinclair played one in the movie "Voyage Home" as captain of the USS Saratoga and then again as captain of another starship in an episode of TNG.

True, but neither of Madge Sinclair's captains were the lead of a series.

Yes, they are not quite accurate. Actually she's the 3rd. There were 2 Black female captains in TNG; Capt Tryla Scott and Capt Sylvia LaForge(played by Madge Sinclair). They would be correct if they said "1st Black female captain in a lead role".

@@reginabritton1236 Ah yes, Tryla Scott. She was placed in that position by aliens trying to infiltrate the Federation. They got very far in Startfleet. Tryla Scott was basically a walk-on character. She's a captain in name only. She was never on a bridge in command.

@@KnowTrentTimoy Actually Tryla Scott captained the USS Renegade and Picard was familiar with her Starfleet record as making captain faster than any other in Starfleet. She was taken over by the same aliens that possessed Picards old friend Admiral Quinn, as they were placing themselves in high positions by infecting the bodies of those already there.
Love Sonequa, love Michael, love the fact that she represents powerful Black women well. As a die hard Trekkie for 50 years I'm not sure this interview correctly depicts her stature in the StarTrek hierarchy. Off the top of my head I remember at least 2 other Black female captains, both from TNG. Capt Tryla Scott and Capt Sylvia LaForge(played by Madge Sinclair). There may have been more.

@Secretly a Celebrity Geordie's mother was a Starfleet captain that was mentioned in several episodes of TNG. Then in season 7 episode 3 "Interface" actress Madge Sinclair portrayed Captain Sylvia LaForge- captain of the Hera. Air date Oct 4, 1993.

@@reginabritton1236 😅 Happy to know this canvass is so well informed. 😇
Caught up so far to Season 3 and so excited to see all that comes next.
I have loved Star Trek since I first started watching it when I was 7 years old in the late 70s. I still love it and love Mrs. Martin-Green and her character. Discovery is an excellent show and I love the diversity of the cast. They outdid themselves with this one.
Can’t think of a classier woman for the role. Well done Sonequa. “Let’s fly”
I'm from Germany and i can't watch it! That's not fair! 😠

Watch Star Trek the Orville. It's miles better
Thank goodness a fourth season.
As much as I do understand why people aren't huge fans of the show (the scale of the threats is way OTT for me) but I really love Discovery. That Archer Space dock scene from 4.01 bought tears to me eye.
She has truly a beautiful and captivating smile
So beautiful!!!!
Umm, ya'll forgot about Madge Sinclair....
That laugh was maniac like.
Madam Captain!!!
Haven't followed since the Mirror Universe infiltrator, but might check it out again (darn, the last seasons of Enterprise are STILL underrated).
the michael burnham show goes on ...

As a Trekker, I jumped in the hate Starship from the moment STD came out because like many Star Trek fans I hated they were crapping all over cannon. Going to the future was the best thing that happened to the show, yeah some cringy moments I'm hooked n, Sonequa and the rest of the cast plus finally, some really good writing turn it around for me to the point that they get all the way to 7 seasons and perhaps even more to make more Star Trek history, now "Make it so"
A trully beautiful lady !!! But the rest of the world cant see you on screen....
Wait? I thought that tall alien guy was captain?

@@chocolateangel8743 Yes. I don’t come to Star Trek to see the main protagonists go unchallenged in their worldview. I think Rilik is right that Burnham has a messiah complex that doesn’t jive with being a good captain. Part of being Captain means delegating power. But Burnham goes on all the dangerous missions herself without handing them off to her crew. After all, it is her show. But making the Captain the lord’s gift to the Star Trek universe is not endearing. In many ways, Burnham is Kirk’s id made manifest.

@@benjaminstock5334 Wil Wheaton interviewed Sonequa and said that she is like a combination of Captains Kurt and Picard. They also talked about how Burnham is allowed to make mistakes but is still seen in a great leader. The Rilik character is interesting because she is 3 races. Wil also said that he's gotten to see some upcoming episodes -- and things get really good.

@@chocolateangel8743 I don’t see Picard in Burnham. Picard rarely had episodes where he was the main character. Exceptions that come to mind are captain’s holiday, starship mine and chain of command part 2. Picard was mature enough to not make everything about him, and that is one of the factors to his success as a character. One of the appealing things about Picard was that he rarely butted heads with his superiors. Sincerely, was there ANY chance that Burnham would not but heads with Rilik? She’s always butting heads with whatever superior she enters a working relationship with, whether it’s Saru, Georgiou, Pike or Vance. She should have stayed running around the galaxy with Book in the beginning of season 3. She would have been much happier marching to the beat of her own drum. But that’s where Burnham’s least appealing character trait comes in: her love of power. Despite her eminent qualifications as a privateer, she wants a crew to command. Picard gives me the impression that he runs a starship because it’s his job. Burnham gives me the impression that she runs a ship so she can control others.

But the really frustrating thing about the show is that it constantly- at least since Michelle Paradise took over- rewards Burnham for every decision she makes, both good and bad. If the show had abided by the tone it set in season 1, Burnham would never have been allowed the captain’s chair after the stunt she pulled abandoning her post to rescue Book. Instead, she is ultimately rewarded- specifically for following her own rule book. If the theme of Picard is that no bad deed goes unpunished, the theme of Discovery is that no bad deed goes unrewarded. I hope Rilik can put Burnham in her place, but we’ve seen this story before, and we know how it ends. Burnham will shame Rilik and prove her moral superiority. Who knows? Maybe she will replace her as President by season’s end. This level of plot armor is why I have such a hard time caring about anything going on in Discovery. We know the routine.
She might be a nice person and even an decent actress. But she is not a worthy captain and STD is not trek
Wtf does George Floyd have anything to do with this
Please stop..
First black female captian... no she isnt!
