Sonder Short Film | The Silk Road Mountain Race with Adventure Pedlar Pete McNeil

Спорт

This year was the inaugural running of the Silk Road Mountain Race, a 1700km race across the wild and remote mountain roads and trails of Kyrgystan.
Pete rode his Sonder Bikes Broken Road Titanium bike loaded with Alpkit luggage and kit.
The terrain varied from fast gravel roads to rough washboard trails through to technical single track and quite a bit of hike-a-bike on steep ground.
Pete took a conservative kit choice based on his experience and packed more than many other riders. In the end, this approach paid off, only 1/3 of the field finished as temperatures dropped below -10 for some riders and snow and heavy rain in the mountains made the going tough.
Pete finished 8th overall in 11.5 days and was the first British finisher as the race became much more of an eliminator, he puts his relative success down to his approach, preparation, and experience of travelling in remote areas.

    So youtube "autoplay" gave me "How to Pack for the Highland Trail 550 Bikepacking Route" followed by this. The evolution of a haggard adventurer is a splendid thing to behold. keep on truckin...

    Really enjoyed watching you relive this, thanks so much and a great achievement. I'm not a mountain cyclist, but a trekker. Nonetheless, some very sound advice on attitude of mind to go prepared, with realism. Fabulous!

    Love the approach to kit. Shows how important of an element it is in a race. It’s not all speed speed speed.

    That sigh of relief at the end, it's like you've lived through those 10 days again as you were telling the story. ;) First-hand accounts like yours are what encourages people to go out there and take a leap of faith. Thanks for sharing your story, it's full of great insights into what is probably the toughest race around. I'm giving myself 1 year, maybe 2, before attempting this incredible event. Cheers !

    I followed the race on SM and trackleaders, so I've seen lots of the photography of the amazing landscapes. But your first-hand footage and experiences here have really added something to it, just excellent. Thanks Pete & Alpkit!

    A great walk through of your strategy / approach to the race. I can see where the roads and tails could be rough in these remote areas but don't understand why there should be stretches of hike & bike in a race that long. Draws into question the route planning by organizers.

    Excellent video Pete and very inspiring. As a fellow Sonder rider, I too can't understand why a gravel bike seems to be the weapon of choice for most in ultra events! Knife to a gunfight and all that?😃

    Great video, and I now also have the Sonder Broken Road :-) Question about the Aerobar used on the Love Mud Confucius. Does anybody know which brand and type this is?

  • @user-rk6sn7du4k

    @user-rk6sn7du4k

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not sure what the brand is, but I just used my bars from my tri bike and they fit OK in the Confucius. You have to be a little careful if you put the Aerobars on the main part of the handlebar as the shape of the Confucius prevents you from placing them in the best position, but they really helped with stretching out my arms when I did the Tour Divide.
