another point, in the original mask the main character is really “horny” when he puts the mask on because it’s the opposite of his personality normally (a hopeless romantic). Whereas here, it makes no sense and that rule is apparently forgotten.

Too be fair from what I remember from this movie Jamie Kennedy’s character isn’t all that horny he’s more of a “I just like video games I’m just gonna ignore my wife” so maybe his alternate personality being horny as shit makes sense

The mask is suppose to disable your inhibitions, or weaken them over time, making you act without restraint. In the comic this allowed your darkest self to surface and act. Ipkiss had revenge fantasies, and getting the girl. In the movie they toned it down to make him a more decent person, while the comic had him horrifically murder the mechanics that messed with him.

The most unrealistic part of this movie is a mother leaving her baby for a work trip so soon after it being born, and that's saying something cause of this horrible abomination.

I mean, doesn't most of America have horrific parental leave. I've heard it's expected for some mothers to go back to work literally days after giving birth. Dogs have more rights than human mothers, in the UK mums are expected to get back to work 4-6 weeks after the birth, puppies leave their mum after 8 weeks.

I remember watching this movie as a kid and was always confused why the dad wanted to keep the baby and visa versa. They hated each other through the whole film so it made sense that the baby would go with Loki in the end, and Loki could actually keep up with the baby and his powers. The mom wasn’t really in the film so I guess my kid brain forgot about her. Idk this movie made no sense and the main actors had no chemistry. Alan Cummings and his wardrobe get a 10/10 though.

So the thing about the cartoony looney toons aspects for Jim Carreys character comes from the fact his character *IS* a huge fan of cartoons, and the mask reflects that part of his personality. they go into a bit with the mask professor i think and Jim's character says something like the mask takes your inner most desires or personality and brings it out to the forefront. And while they don't tell you his character is a huge fan of cartoons, they show you through visual storytelling. He has toys and statues and looney toond merchandise all over his aprtemnt, his pajamas are childlike and goofy, even the dog breed is similar to the dogs in the cartoons he watched, the suits Mask Jim wears is clearly inspired by 1940s fashion cus the cartoon characters are from the 1940s. But the jerk mafia character did *not* become a looney toons character, he only got physically stronger and a chad chin. The first movie clearly shows the mask effects people differently based on their subcincious and personality. Haven't seen the sequel in years, but the first movie is free on KZread so I rewatched it recently. But its very clear the sequel didnt realize how the mask functioned at all. Loki is a looney toons charcater (but looks like the evil mafia chad cus Hes the Bad Guy), the dad is a looney toons character, the baby is a looney toons character the dog is a looney toons character. (it works in the first movie considering who the dogs owner is) cus Haha funny mask make you go zoom. Loki is pretty wild in Norse myth not gonna lie but his chaotic mannerism would definitely be different cmopared to Jim's looney toons aesthetic. And this should be reflected with all of the users. The baby, the dad and the dog in the sequel. but its not... they dint havetheir own personalities, its just Do Jim Carrey and Looney Toons Again.

I enjoyed The Mask (1994) and I didn’t like Son of the Mask (2005). But one thing I did learn about Son of the Mask was that it originally wasn’t intended to either a sequel to The Mask nor was it intended to be geared towards children either. In fact, according to the screenwriter himself, Lance Khazei, Son of the Mask was the result of his original screenplay, Baby Formula, which was inspired by Rosemary’s Baby and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and was intended to be geared towards a more adult audience being retooled into a sequel to The Mask.

Alan Cumming as Loki was a good idea if he was used properly, personally I think it would have been cool if Loki didn’t have a physical form so had to possess a person to get The Mask back (that being Cumming) and like his mask he takes on abilities based on what that person wants to be with Cumming being essentially a combination of the movie version and the comic version of Stanley Ipkiss where he’s a repressed sociopath with violent revenge fantasies who loves violent cartoons like Family Guy so he gets cartoony powers that actively kill people in horrific ways

I'll always have a soft spot for it because I enjoyed it when I was younger.

The worst part is that it could’ve been great. The original comics kept going even after the movie released, and even before then there was a sequel story that could’ve been made. Granted, the Mask in the comics is a psychopathic killer who corrupts anyone who wears it, but it wouldn’t take that much to tone it down to a PG-13 rating. Heck, it could even follow the plot of this movie. Have Stanley now as a father dealing with the fact that his son has inherited the powers of the Mask. This time, Stanley is mostly the straight man, now on the receiving end of the Mask’s powers. There’s also a character in the comics and animated series named Walter, who is essentially indestructible and wants to find the Mask. Why not have him be the one searching for it instead of Loki?
