July 1 2016 marked 100 years since the Battle of the Somme started. Commemorations were held around the UK and France. The Somme Centenary Commemoration at the Thiepval Memorial, which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, was attended by more than 10,000 people including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and several heads of state.
Fought between July and November 1916, the Battle of the Somme was one of the defining events of the First World War. More than 1,000,000 Commonwealth, French and German soldiers were wounded, captured or killed. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission cares for cemeteries and memorials across the Somme, which are lasting reminders of the human cost of the fighting in this region throughout the First World War.
