When I was a kid I begged my mom to get me a Model 1 SegaCD from Sam’s Club who had one that was open box (the revised model was out by then). I somehow convinced her and had a ton of fun with Sonic CD, Slipheed and Sewer Shark. Not long afterward we went on a vacation and, upon returning, my SegaCD didn’t work! I tell my mom (who somehow is convinced I broke it?) and we tried to get it replaced, but since it was open box they didn’t guarantee it. As you’d said, knowing what I do now I know I could probably use my multimeter to find a fault and it’s probably the fuse or something. Oh well.

A CD that has been taken proper care of and played a lot will be in better condition than a vinyl that was treated with equal care and played the same amount as with the CD which is good for collectability. I would even argue that collectability is not that important, not every hobby has to be funds for your future plans it’s important that they bring fun.

Your situation with the First Rollout of the Generation 0I Sega CD (NTSC~U) reminds me very much of my own situation with Digital Converter Boxes: I have worked with Two brands over the years, DigitalStream was what we got back when we were doing the shift from Analogue to Digital on June 0I2 of 2009 and Mediasonic's Homeworx is the brand that I opted for in recent years to try and get my old Analogue setups back in action; DigitalStream's option in 2009 was the DTX9900 and Mediasonic's was the HW130STB, all Three units (two of the former; one of the latter) all came with incredibly cheap Capacitors that will burn out (usually in the form of a small yet loud Crack~like explosion) when you run them around the clock and the fact that they have no form of cooling only delivers insult to injury because it has made it virtually impossible to do anything on these units without possibly sidelining them to get a High Definition Television for full~time use in the Editing Room. ~ The two DTX9900 units lasted me Seven and Eight years, respectively, the first had its capacitors blow in August of 20I6 and the other one was done a matter of months later; DigitalStream manufactured these with a very wide form factor for the time, making it significantly easier to dissipate heat than most current units on the market from other brands, it is easily one of the most stable options that we had in the Early Era of Digital Converter Boxes and while it doesn't come with Multimedia Functionality nor DVR resources it is still one of the most solid products that you could get and anybody with good soldering skills can easily bring any unit back from the dead. ~ The HW130STB has only been on my person since September 0I2 of 2022, we got it during a Mercury Retrograde and the capacitors blew on me this past Sunday (April 02I of 2024, for those reading this deep into the future; this too, was during a Mercury Retrograde), there were at least Two or Three incredibly loud pops and cracks from the box on April 020 and 02I to tell me what was happening and despite being plugged into an incredibly durable Surge Protector (a Belkin Premiere Series SurgeMaster II (Skeleton Model) from I998), simple fact of the matter is that Mediasonic and Homeworx made these boxes with an Ultra Compact design that not only packs too much heat in a suffocating environment, but it also was produced by its Chinese division in an incredibly difficult manner to service because it has no Screws and it forces users to have to literally break the box open (and also its Remote) simply to get to the PCB; the capacitors used are very Low Grade and akin to First Generation Sega CD units it is very easy to break these without being able to repair unless you know exactly what you are doing and which parts are the safest and most effective to last for Around the Clock usage under consistent Heavy Load. What happened with your unit is definitely a major oversight, on the part of Sega, the parts it was working with were probably the best that Japan had on hand at the time though and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing owners of the original NTSC~J units from I99I deliver similar stories that match up with your scenario if a Power Surge ever happened in the region; in reality, the Sega CD should've been its own console from the get~go with Megadrive Compatibility (pretty much what the Multi~Mega and CDX ultimately became in I994), I would've definitely expected more from its 0299.95$ USD pricetag because as a Multimedia system that could play Audio CDs and deliver Karaoke Night through its CD+G Reader this is too expensive to get as what is essentially a glorified Peripheral, the Compact Disc was roughly Nine Years into its run when the Sega CD debuted in I99I and for many who didn't want a CD~i or couldn't get a ThreeDO (which keep in mind came with a Five Disc CD Changer if you got the N-1005 "Robo" model) this was one of the cheapest consoles at the time with an effective library of games and media compatibility that it would've easily sold more units for cheaper if it was both a Standalone option and an effective way to evolve the standard of game development as we waited for the Neptune and Sega Saturn.

I had both an SNES and got a Genesis Model 2 around 1993 or so. I think at that time both systems were around $100 to $150 and as you know had all kinds of games on them. I did have a desire to get the Sega CD. But $300 was a lot of money in 1993 and my parents laughed at the thought of me getting an add on for that price. Even when it went down in price to $250 in 1994 it was just not happening. I didn’t complain too much though. Between both systems I had enough gaming to keep me occupied all the way till I got the N64 in 1997. By then the Sega CD was a distant memory.

I had a Sega CD (model 1) as well, the only title I had was Sonic CD. My Sega CD was constantly freezing, and I didn't get more games for it. I still own it. [When I got my Sega CD, I had to take my console back because it didn't include the bundle that you showed. My dad also bought it on layaway.] I bring up the layaway, because by the time we got it out of layaway, they stopped producing games for it. 😅 I swore off buying another Sega product.

I had a Sega CD model 2. I wished it came with those games that you got for it. The one I got was Sewer Shark. Some of my favorite games back in the day for it were Silpheed, Prize Fighter, Eternal Champions, The Terminator, Iron Helix, Sonic CD, Lords of Thunder and more! I also wasn't as excited for it as I was when I first got my SNES which was more of an upgrade in everyway whereas the Sega CD seemed like more of a half step.

On the "Rock Paintings" disc, it is a CD+Graphics. Part of the CD Standard is the ability to display a slideshow of still images and lyrics on a screen provided your CD player has a graphics decoder. In addition to Sega CD, the Philips CD-I Player also had the ability to display graphics, and CD Karaoke players can also display the graphics. The graphics are stored in one of the subcode channels on the disc, and my Philips CD-i player would automatically display the graphics if they were present on the CD. I have a number of CDs with Graphics including "Behind the Mask" by Fleetwood Mac, "Information Society" (self titled), "Tokyo Rose" by Van Dyke Parks, Laura Branigan (self titled), and "Eat or be Eaten" by The Firesign Theatre. I also have a sampler disc from GRP that shows the full capabilities of CD+Graphics, it provides a full review of each track's artist. It's unfortunate that graphics weren't implemented on all CDs even if they couldn't be displayed with the early players. One of the complaints about CD over LP is the size of the album art with CDs. Well, with graphics it is possible to display large album art, liner notes, running lyrics, and other information on any TV set via a graphics decoder on the CD player.

This happened to me as well, though with a model 2. Got another functional machine used later on and kept my original, since it'd be e-waste. Since I was still unaware of the fuse at a later time, I exchanged the motherboard to make a Frankenstein unit. So... at least it works, I guess.

The first SEGA Saturn I bought... I was so worried about dust collecting on it that I'd put a cloth over it when I wasn't playing it. Then one day it would only boot to the CD player screen, and the 2 sound cubes (polygons) on the left and right to indicate the sound levels were large reddish spheres (as if a loud sound was constantly playing) but it would not play any discs. I'm not sure exactly what made that happen, but I still kind of believe it was due to it overheating from the cloth I'd put on it. 😞 It was never dropped or abused in any way.

We took it to Software etc and from what I remember hearing from the clerk, they said a bunch of the early models were defective and they gave us a replacement. Also, I found it interesting as a kid that I could put Sol Feace in my regular cd player and it would play the music from the game!

This reminds me of when my mother would lend my game systems to be older brother who had moved out. EVERY TIME I got my system back, it was damaged. After he damaged my Sega Genesis and my Super Nintendo, I asked my mom to not lend him my consoles anymore. Less than a week later, I come home from school and my gameboy is missing. I asked her if she saw it, and she said she lent it to him. It came back completely broken. After that, I hid my consoles when I wasn't using them. My brother came over, turned my room upside down, found my Playstation, took it home and brought it back broken. I eventually had to buy a damn SAFE to keep my consoles in just to keep them out of his hands because my mother would keep letting him take and abuse my games.

I got the model one Sega CD for Christmas in 1992, had all those add ins plus "Sewer Shark" I also had that "Road Avenger" game, but the FMV game I played the most by far was "Night Trap" which generated a little bit of controversy at the time because it was basically a cheesy slasher film, I had Dracula too, but I hated that game because it was pretty hard. Silpheed was "the big one" on that system because of the poly graphics at the time. My first experience with Doom was on the 32X also.

If you add a 32X, then you need to plug in 3 power bricks. But they won't all fit on a normal 6-outlet surge protector. You need a squid-type extension cord. But those didn't exist in the early 90s, so I wonder what Sega recommended for people who only had 1 outlet near the TV (You also need an outlet for the TV). I guess you'd just use 2 power strips.
