    Love my weigh safe hitch. The major advantage is having the trailer hooked to the truck when I test load position. I'm skeptical of loading anything or moving the load without being connected to the truck. The jack mount is a plausible option.

    Wow. That is a great tool. I’d buy it if I had a TT. As you said, Just wish they had a device for fifth wheels! I am trying to use the Better Weigh I purchased from eTrailer. Unfortunately there isn’t a CAT scale within several hours to verify the numbers it reports. To compound issues, I haven’t found a level place to run the tests. San Diego is very hilly. I believe it is important to know ones weights so that you know you are safe. That is why these devices are so helpful and for many crucial.

    Brian Sparks Very interesting. I read the instructions. Definitely more involved than a TT. Have you used one? The one thing I noticed is that the king pin is 6” high when the weight is measured, so “some” of the weight is going to shift back to the 5er. Regardless, I am sure this gives you a great idea of the weight at the kingpin. I will continue testing the Better Weigh and check it on a cat scale some day. If I find it to be grossly inaccurate I will give this a try. I researched eTrailer and they only carry the Sherline TT weight scale. I think the device demonstrated in this video is much easier to use though. Again thanks.

    I have the Sherline TT version that goes up to 5000 pounds. Some of those tripods are rated up to 5000 pounds and could be used to put the Sherline on to get a weight. Just have to make 100% sure the trailer will not move when the front jacks come up when using it. Could be, depends on how careful you are, but they aren't really meant to support the full pin weight. One other way is to use 2x8 boards stacked up criss cross at the back of the bed and put the scale on them.

A Kingpin is 2" in diameter, so if you slip it on the kingpin, it should fit in the closed locking jaws, the hard part would be securing it to the king pin so your not between the box and hitch. You can measure tung weight by having a friend or two stand on your back bumper. Measure the height between the ground and the truck. If you want five hundred pounds of tung weight you need big friends. Measure the height without weight and with. Say for instance you want 350 pounds of weight of your truck is 22" at no weight and 19" when you put 350 pounds on the back bumper. Hook up the trailer and measure the height of the bumper again. If it's lower than 19 you have more than 350. If you have 20" you don't have enough. It works every time and it doesn't cost anything.

    From what I read about the ODBII weight gauges is it is accurate to within 500 pounds. Great for ballpark, but if you are at the limits, use a real scale to verify.

    What product would you recommend to measure the tongue weight for a 5th Wheel?

  • @johnwelch6852

    @johnwelch6852

    4 жыл бұрын

    Download the cat scale app. Setup payment in the app. Go to any one of thousands of cat scales in the US. Pull truck and camper on scale activate the app it will charge you and weigh your rig. Pull off scale and park your rig and unhook 5th wheel.. pull back on scale and do a “re-weigh”. The first weigh is 12 bucks. The re-weigh if done within 24 hours is like 3.. so for q5 bucks you have a certified weight ticket... do the math and you will know what your real pin weight is.

    That’s a nice thing but, I’d think it’d be better if it was able to be quick mounted to the frame at the trailer tongue where you could easily and quickly test the weight while it is still hooked up to your truck and not hafto jack it up and down so much. Plus it wouldn’t be mounted to the trailers jack holding weight all the time. You could just jack up the tongue enough to slip it down and get your weight and then jack it up again to remove it it I know it sounds just like what you were doing with it but this way it would already be on your truck we’re y would be able to see it
