Some of the craziest 3.5 monsters

Ойындар

Spencer found some weird monsters and I try to guess them. Use them in your games to give your players a real big surprise they'll be like "woah what's this" and you'll laugh because you simply looked into an old book.

    The Drowning Aura is basically what'd happen if you let someone use Create Water inside an enemy's lungs. That's why I said my players were allowed to do that, and armed them with the knowledge that if they did, it would create these creatures, who would seek revenge on them for doing so. They chose not to do so.

    11:08 Now I see where the inspiration for one of my favorite Starfinder monsters is. Starfinder has an undead called a Nihili, which is similar to the drowned, except, in space. Their body is all torn apart from rapid decompression, they have a suffocation aura (so if you're too close to them you find yourself unable to breathe) and in addition, they have their own, *personal* gravity field. They can just walk along on ship hulls with their own gravity, and they can move through space freely by "falling" in the direction they want to go.

    You can't talk about freaky 3.5 monsters without mentioning one of my favorite, the slaymate. It's basically a zombie kid, so it's fairly weak and pretty passive, but necromancers like to keep them around because their presence makes necromancy WAY more powerful.

    Hm. Might try to convert the Night Twist. I've a campaign planned where the native elves are closer to dryad types, and their trees sit on leyline convergences, meaning all magic comes strictly from elves and those descended from elves. But humans have been fucking up the forests and destroyed some of the leyline trees. Could easily make these destroyed leyline trees into Night Twists.

    The Drowned was one of my favorite monsters in 3.5 and seeing it in the thumbnail is what drew me to this video! The book didn't give a visual indicator of the aura, but whenever I would throw one of these at my players I always hinted at it by filling the area with the shifting reflection of light shining through water, and make things like hair, fabric and plants sway around as if they were submerged. I did this because this bad boy was a CR 8 monster, which was insanely low for what it was capable of. It was pretty tanky so it could soak up hits while trying to keep players within its drowning aura, and I wanted to make sure the party knew that being close to this thing could potentially be bad news before they went rushing in. I once sent a higher level party to a temple that was located in the air pocket of an underwater cave, and I filled it with these things. It was fun describing the 'bubble' of the drowning aura appearing around a corner and spreading out towards them before the actual Drowned came into view. Good times!

    I like to think that The Drowned's drowning aura is like, they were deprived of air and that caused their death and later monsterfied revival, so they're literally sucking all the air around them to make up for the way they died (it can be just a psycholocial thing to make themselves feel better or their new lungs reaaaaaally need some big air)... so there's literally no air around them because they're always taking deep heavy ragged breaths to stay alive

  • @joe_casanova

    Im not an expert on dnd but there is a cave in real life called the Cave of Swords where the air's humidity is at 100% and is 45 degrees C so the water you are inhaling condensates in your lungs, slowly filling up until you drown. This can be a real life explanation to the "Drowning Aura" dilemma.

  • @Orillion123456

    The drowning aura isn't a bubble of water, it's just an invisible magical effect that magically drowns you regardless of whether there is any water nearby at all (similar to some spell I forgot what it was called where you can target a guy and fill their lungs with water and he drowns). But yeah I fuckin' love that some 3.5 monster entries properly list what happens to your party when they get fucked up by the monster, and even more so when that includes descriptions of the lifecycle of the monster aswell.

    The Drowned's aura is more accurately explained as being an area where oxygen does not exist, causing the living around it to drown through asphixiation, additionally, I would also suggest the aura to have an illusion effect of causing the individual caught within its radius to believe he has been suddenly sent into the middle of uncharted ocean waters at a depth of 150 feet and act accordingly

Edit, since I posted this halfway through the video. The Drowning Aura I always felt was more like just water magically appearing in your lungs, and escaping the range for a round let this phantasmal water evaporate through your breath, so you could reset the DC of the save to get back in there and fight it.

    When damage type is not listed its called untyped damage and that's very important because untyped damage bypasses all resistances and damage reductions

  • @seigeengine
    @seigeengine Жыл бұрын

    I mean, I feel like damage type is so emphasized in 5e, because of the resistance system which was not really part of 3.5e. In 3.5e, not specifying damage wasn't a big deal because the type of damage usually also wasn't a big deal. Basically some psycho got some pokemon in our d&d and now your local bug catcher is buttpained because nobody cared to specify that a beholder was a flying dark type or w/e.
