I love Waffle 🥰. We picked up our seven month old dog from the shelter about two weeks ago and she hasn’t learned anything from her previous owners (we are her third family). Because she is very sensitive and young, I have to remind myself to still be strict with her and apply the same (or stricter) rules as my older dog has. This video is a great reminder, thanks!

Excellent video! This exactly how we raise our dogs (4 labs). Olive is the youngest at 18 months and was in a pen in the open plan living area for the first 12 months during the day because she just found she couldn't control her impulses with 3 other dogs in the house. At 12 months her place training was impeccable and the pen came down and she stays on her bed or in her crate. She's still not allowed to have access to the rest of the house!

Great video. You're an excellent talker and as an owner of a 3 yr old dog that lives in our home with us I found a lot of your advice incredibly useful. We organically learned much of what you taught in this video, particularly about teaching the dog how to behave in the home. The kitchen has been our training room too and learning 1. Where they should be most of the time, calm and quiet in a convenient part of the room that is theirs, and 2. Having limits/boundaries if they are going to move around, like not climbing on furniture or mouthing the curtains, is very useful to us and our dog. Also, you have a gorgeous interior! My wife has a cheerful, colorful, aesthetic in our home too, including a very similar Easter tree with hand painted eggs going back at least four generations, although ours hangs from the chandelier over the breakfast nook.

This was perfect timing for us. We have a one year old field who's been largely outdoors and sleeping inside. She goes a bit bananas when first let into the house so it's good to see we're on the right track despite her being a bit hyper.

Great video. One of the best tips someone gave me when we first got our flatcoated retriever was 'put a rug/mat or something somewhere in the kitchen (out of the way for you) en teach him to go there when you say it'. Still use the "to your mat" command each day and it gives so much clarity for us both. Ideal when you're cooking or walking around with stuff and you don't want to trip over a dog.

Great video Charlie. It's awesome to here such honesty coming from you, a professional dog trainer. I've a crazy 1 1/2 year old golden cocker like waffle and she's brilliantly clever but relentless. I've had to be strict with her from day one and it's starting to pay off now, but I still struggle with controlling her off lead. Your videos help massively & give me confidence in what I'm doing. Thanks

I love your videos, and im in the market for my first working dog for rough shooting. I appreciate that your setup at home is slightly different to most, but could you do some sort of guide to the first few weeks. I.e bringing a dog home, basics around night time and toileting etc.

“I’m in the kitchen. Not really sure what I’m doing in the kitchen… not really my department!” This raised a big chuckle. Lovely to see waffle and the progress he’s making. He’s a real character 😊

I now have a chesapeake retriever that is a different kettle of fish .I will try what you say give it a 100% it's going to be interesting 😉 he is only 4 months old at the moment long way to go yet . And yes he is from working stock. Thanks again

Hi Charlie - it would be great to understand how you react when a dog runs off, does not come back immediately when called but eventually comes back. Do you praise for coming back or scold for running off and not coming back immediately? Thank you so much for real dog training rather than edited "magic".

Hi Charlie - I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos intermittently whilst getting to know my first dog - a lively wcs! Sadly I haven’t always followed some of the advice (like don’t walk your dog!!) so now at almost 9 months of age I need to do a bit of retraining of obedience that’s slipped a bit/never really existed let’s be honest😬and work at keeping her closer. I’ll be interested to see how you get on with the retriever from Switzerland! Can I ask - at 8-12 months of age how long would you be creating a dog like Waffle during the day? Thanks Claire

Control, consistency and repetition. Pitchy voices are not allowed as are treats. The reward is positive recognition which is a stroke on the head and back when they give you what you are asking them to do. Timing for positive and negative feedback is critical.
