SOME and ANY in English - Grammar Lesson - A, An, Some or Any?
The difference between SOME and ANY in English
First, we quickly look at the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. This is important to know when learning about SOME and ANY.
We show how A and AN are used with singular countable nouns and then we show how to use SOME with affirmative sentences and ANY with negative sentences (for plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns).
We look at how ANY is normally used with questions but then we go into the three main exceptions to this rule where SOME is used in questions instead of ANY.
Then we see how SOME and ANY can be used without a noun and finally there is a dialogue where you have to fill the blanks with either A, AN, SOME or ANY.

Hi! I'm very confused with these answers to some sentences in the apendix of Grant Taylor's book : ''Are there some cigarettes in the box on the table?'' ''Are there any (or some) extra chairs in the other classroom?" "Did the teacher make any (or some) comments on your paper?" I would answer ''any'' to all of them, but there seems to be a different opinion in this book. Is ''some'' here some kind of exception to the rule? I would appreciate your answer.

Great video Woodward as always. But I have a question. Why do we use "a" instead of "some" in fruit salad? Is fruit salad an exception?
@WoodwardEnglish
2 жыл бұрын
Because SALAD is countable. One salad, two salads .... "fruit" just lets us know what type of salad it is.

@@WoodwardEnglish :o it's like a container/ class manager, like one "cup" of coffee. But in this case, it's a container from kinds of salads.
Sir I have a question at end of the video you gave some sentences where the sentence was do we have - strawberries in the fridge so I want to know why you used any why we cant use a strawberries or bcoz of ? mark any is used I hope sir you got my query 🙏

Hi Woodward English, I'm glad to found you. this tutorial is such a simple but amazing. I have a question, why "SOME" at 09:34 followed by singular noun? Greeting :)

Great question. CAKE can be both countable and uncountable. If you are talking about part of a cake, it is usually uncountable. It can also be uncountable if we are talking about cake in general. However you CAN count individual (whole) cakes making it countable. e.g. He wanted two cakes for his birthday. Have you seen our video about Countable and Uncountable Nouns? - kzread.info/dash/bejne/fX53rdego8Wfmto.html Food is often (though not always) uncountable.

I think I've made a wrong question literally. Fortunately, you can understand what I mean. So, is CAKE on the questions mean uncountable noun?

Thank you for the wonderful explanation! I've got a question about the salad. It is countable and uncountable like the cake, isn't it? That's why at 11.46 min. in the exercise you wrote A SALAD ( "Let's make A salad.) I thought we should have written "Let's make some salad."

no.
While your video is more accurate than many other online sources on the topic, your video also omits one important aspect. In negative sentences, 'any' is only used if it means 'nothing or nobody at all'. Examples contrary to your description: 1. 'Some students did not do some parts of the homework'. 2. Oxford Learner's Dictionary: 'Lack...is the state of not having something or not having enough of something'. In both cases, 'some' needs to be used in negative sentences.

Yes, there are even more rules though I didn't want to overwhelm students learning English. These are the main rules and the ones most likely to be used. Once they get to a more advanced level, they can learn all of the nuances of the language.
