Solving cold start problem on an old Mercedes Sprinter - 088

Комедия

I bought this old van, and the previous owner said it would not start on a cold day, even after he changed the spark plugs.
Would have to wait till midday and +7c to start it, and it was getting worse as time went on.
Van always started fine in summer and after first start up when engine was warm.
As it was a cheap van, I didn’t invest any money on it over the first 2 years and just used it in summer.
When it needed new tyres I asked the mechanic to try and solve the cold start problem.
Glow plugs working and getting power. Battery good. Engine temp gauge working. Outside temperature on dash correct.
At the second visit he said the fuel filter wasn’t allowing enough fuel in, so it was having trouble starting.
A new fuel filter and the injectors cleaned and it started at zero degrees c.
Still a crappy van, but slightly less crappy than before.

Note for all. With any diesel that is hard to start. Always start with the fuel filter. Then do voltage test on glow plugs. Check for fuel leaks, on pump connections and injector connections. Also check vacuum hoses on pump in these models. This can allow fuel to syphon back into the tank. Creating air in the lines.

I surprised this van even runs after 1.3 million km :)
