PS we have had our dehumidifier since 2011 and all we have to do is to change the filter. Purchase a Karcher window vacuum they are brilliant at hoovering moister from all the windows in the morning plus a quick complete with kitchen roll.

Didn't believe the hype about dehumidfiers but eventually caved in because of severe condensation, never looked back. Its a game changer, full tank of water removed daily and added bonus that it pennies to run, dries laundry bone dry and also acts lije a heater as it removes damp air. Costly to buy but its earned its keep. Recommend oil filled radiator on wheels with a timer so you have dry air and warm kitchen/sitting room to wake up to in the mornings. Wishing you and wifey all the best from across the pond in Dublin.

I lived in a static in the dales. I loved it. Yes to a dehumidifier. I bought mine second hand from someone leaving a van and just sold it on a few months ago. I don't recall it being expensive to run but i didnt have it on constantly as it would have dried the air and given us a cough. Every morning my ritual used to be wii g the window frames. We didn't have central heating or double glazing but we used a couple of oil filled heaters. They were great. Id keep them on pretty low in the cold weather. We recently moved into a bungalow as nd we got two off amazon, i think they were about twenty five pounds each. I think we maybe only used two gas bottles a year if that as i utilised my slow cooler a lot. One thing i did do to keep heat in the van was i got a local blind company to fit blackout blinds. They were thick and acted like insulation and stopped all the draughts. Also make some draught excluders for the bottom of the door and we always slept eith the bedroom door open if we couldn't open the window. I also got lots of mats. Not only did they help insulate the floor but they also stopped muddy feet being trod through the van. It looks lovely and i would have loved to have been your neighbour. I watch your container garden channel as im new to gardening but we have no soil. Through following you you wouldn't believe to see ehat i have growing! Not sure what will come to fruition though !

Keep your toilet seat down to keep in evaporating water. When you have boiled a kettle & made your tea, fill the kettle back up with cold water to cool it down & kill anymore steam. Electric Dehumidifiers that can also drain into a shower tray or sink via a rear hose is a must. These can be put on a timer & left to run during periods of absence. Also try to get one where you can set the humidity you require. This also acts as a timer if it is left switched on constant. They are quite cheap to run. I use mine standing in front of an airer full of washing overnight & the clothes are dry by morning, gathering a full tank of water. Mine is the Challenge MDDN-10DEN3-QA3 10ltr Dehumidifier £145 from ARGOS

Electric dehumidifiers are great and cheap for winter, stop buying those pound land things, move room to room when needed, buy a pressure cooker, cheaper on fuel, 4 minutes on steam ( directed at window) cooks brilliantly Old sock fill it with cat litter in your car window etc will help,

We also do all the tips you mentioned for our little bungalow during Autumn/Winter. We use our lidded slow cookers constantly Autumn/Winter, so no pots & pans. Much cheaper to cook with than using our gas oven. We use salt bowls dotted around all the rooms . They catch a lot of water over night . The bought ones fill up just as quick & found we were buying them weekly , so works out very expensive for all the rooms. The salt bowls work just as well & cost only pence. First thing l do when opening curtains, l will give windows a quick wipe if condensation on them. We make sure our headboard, any cabinets & sofa etc is a little away from walls to allow air flow. l also store all our clothes in large cheap plastic stack-able totes in the wardrobe, stops them absorbing any moisture around in the rooms. All our clothes are non iron so ok stored this way. Our under bed draw divan l use to store sheets, pillow cases etc are put in the free plastic large bags we keep getting posted through letterbox. Keeps everything from possible dampness. As only 2 of us, l only wash clothes etc Mondays so can dry them as quick as possible, so no wet washing in rooms during the week. l line dry, but we have a Pully Ceiling Dryer Maid in the kitchen. It's great as the warm air that rises in the kitchen soon dries any clothes hanging on them. Plus we use a dehumidifier in Winter, usually set up in our hall as we always keep all our room doors open to allow air flow. If l have any wet washing on a stand ,l put it near the dehumidifier to dry things quicker. Good idea to get tips now Ivan & to be prepared.

Those little Poundland dehumidifiers are great for inside your wardrobes. To be honest the only place we've ever found any mould starting in caravans is behind the curtains in the bedrooms (particularly if there's a bedroom that doesn't get much sun). We never used the cooker or hob in our vans - always microwave or airfryer. Best advice I could give to anyone considering buying a van is to go for one with central heating. Makes life a whole lot easier.

I can highly recommend an Ebac dehumidifier The company are quite helpful when it comes to working out what size you will need. It cured all our damp and mold problems in our bungalow and we had been struggling for years with this problem. We had spent a small fortune on the moisture traps and those Unibond blocks which we were constantly changing. I think you would be better off with a dehumidifier especially in the cold months. Hope this helps. Cheers.

I really hope it works out for you for the long run. My husband and I are planning to sell our house and retire to a flat when our youngest finishes school. Well, we might not be fully retired when we go, but we will no longer need the space. We can barely afford the mortgage here and then maintain it. We are hoping that lowering our bills substantially will happen. We have no retirement savings at all. But at least we DO have the house to sell. Everyone should have the ability to have a place to live without stress. I want very much for this to work out for you both and the bills to remain low!

@charlotteinnocent8752 Please be careful a flat might seem like a cheaper option but there are a few hidden cost’s that could be very expensive. You will be liable for a share of repairs to the building roof lifts stairs etc. At least with a house you are in control you will still need to factor in funds for repairs but without the pressure. You will also be at a higher risk of noisy neighbours. To make money you could rent out rooms that you don’t use. We thought about doing the same as you and thanks to a good friend we didn’t. The advice we got was to systematically clear any debt and cut up all credit cards. Get a book and right down all your outgoings and the date they have to be paid. Look at what you have left and decide how much you can save. When you see your savings go up you will soon get excited about watching your savings grow. I hope this helps you. All the best moving forward.

@@user-zw3bg9vr5g We have never had debt and we have one credit card with no balance. Our financial situation is a lot to do with medical issues with my third child. But we could downsize to a small house instead as an option to consider. We moved to the largest we could afford for the child's benefit due to his issues. I have already looked into the yearly fees associated with some places, but we have a good few years before we'll move. Said medical issues are the other reason we decided not to have a monthly retirement fund, it went towards that.

If you are DIY minded and have the money, seriously consider insulating underneath your van with Kingspan panels or similar and fitting a wood burner in place of the gas fire, the improvement will be huge. It is quite some work and expense for sure but worth every penny. [Assuming your site owner is OK with you having a decent quantity of split logs delivered and stored under your van]

Might be an idea to get some quick drying towels for the Winter. They obviously take a lot less drying after being laundered as well as when you've used them after a shower. We've got some we bought decades ago when we used to go tent camping. They're full bath size and just go on and on - seem to be indestructible. We also used microfibre bedding (which is a lot nicer than it sounds and saves a ton of work washing drying and ironing).

Those little dessicant filled dehumidifiers and electric dehumidifiers won't cut it in winter, all vans have vents and roof ridge vents, your trying to dehumidy the planet (it's completely open to the outside atmosphere). If you vacate the van in winter, leave every window locked open on the latch, if you reside there in winter, retire to the bedroom (with a heater and tv) and open all windows and doors, cupboards too, wide to allow airflow around the van as soon as you wake up. Happy glamping, from a HVAC engineer 😉.

Invest in a dehumidifier and use electric rather than gas heating. Gas gives off water vapour. Try the infrared panels as they are cheap to run. We use them in our bungalow in the winter and they are brilliant. Coupled with solar panels in a cold sunny day and no electricity charges - although up front costs of course.

Dehumidifier quite cheap to run and around £180 from screwfix, also helps with drying clothes if needed and would negate the need for an extractor fan. Window vac helps as collects water but does need charging Would ventilate in winter too though and a condenser dryer doesn't need a vent, collects water which you empty

Just get a diesel heater fitted they are cheap to run, cheap to create a warm environment to dry your clothes. Open your door while you make mash, let the steam out, open the door a couple of times a day to let the moisture out. Bang your diesel heater back on, it will heat the place in minutes. Get a decent barbeque outside your front door, do a lot of cooking outside. It's not that much different to a lot of older properties that fill up with moisture at certain times of the year.

Get some plastic bowls and fill them with salt. Place them in the parts of the van where condensation is likely to gather. Believe me, you'll be surprised by just how much condensation a bowl of salt can take out of the air. Simply pour the water away once a week and re-use. You'll get a few weeks out of a bowl of salt before you have to change it. Simple quick and cheap.

Trays of salt work really well. I've used them. You can gently tip the water off and carry on using them, or dry the salt out when you use the oven and reuse it. Much cheaper than keep buying the dehumidifiers.

  • @bazabiker4870
    @bazabiker487015 күн бұрын

Well, much of your narrative has been covered in my previous comments Humidity is relative hence the unit rh Air can hold moisture. The warmer the air, the greater the moisture it can hold. Air at zero degrees can no longer hold water. Warm air, if cooled, can no longer hold as much moisture, so the moisture is released. The above can be seen when we place a wet towel on a radiator. Heat warms the towel and air around it. The warmer air can hold more moisture & the towel dries. The warm moist air hits a cold surface ( a window), air is cooled, moisture is released from the air. So the bit about relative can be understood by thinking as the air temperature = 1/2 pt beer glass that's half full (1/4pt) = 50% humidity at that (relative ) temperature (glass size). If I only change the temperature, ( which increases the airs ability to hold more moisture, so ill increased the glass size) = 1pt beer glass, as the water hasn't yet changed the rh is now 25%. It's still 1/4pt of water but now in a 1pt glass Let's suppose it absorbs more moisture, because it's more than capable (warmer) as a pt glass, to say 50% full. It's now holding twice as much as before, all because the temperature rise. If the temperature now drops back to original, so now a 1/2pt glass, it's now full or 100% rh. It cannot hold anymore moisture. So we see above that warm air can hold more moisture and changing temperature can change the rh. So all good stuff, if you've managed to follow that. So putting heating on will help absorb moisture, opening a window allows cold (& therefore dryer air) into the property and warm, moist air out, rather than it hitting cold surfaces, cooling and dropping its moisture. This works but the heat you want is going out the windows at a cost. Your fixed vents are doing this as well. And mould grows somewhere around 60%, so keeping humidity below this helps lots. Air movements are good, this helps stop moisture forming on cold surfaces. A Dehumidifier in effect empties the pt glass of water. So it's continually grabbing a glass, emptying it and sending out an empty glass, so as each glass will normalize, the net effect is the glass remains a pt size( because temperature is maintain), but holds much less moisture ( because it's been removed) and now warm and dry. I'd expect a dehumidifier to be taking 1 litre minimum a day out of you caravan in autumn maybe more. It'll dry the very fabric of you home, curtains, sofa, mattress etc. And stabilise the moisture ( untill you boil kettle, shower etc.), but then start to rebalance again. It should be more cost effective than heating the air leaving through open windows. Stops mould etc. Not super cheap. Possibly 10p/hr, but that's £2.50/day maximum, and it won't be running 100% everyday, it'll settle, as the moisture level drops. You may consider blanking off some of you open vents ( not in wardrobes or cupboards etc.) Good luck. meaco DL8 if you intend leaving it on, in winter when out for periods, as it'll run down to 0 degrees, compressor types don't Ebac are also good, cost effective, but I believe are more expensive/ compressor based

Keep salt in bowls when you leave the van unoccupied . Covers for chairs and couches. Condensation strips under the windows. The condensation boxes with changeable crystals are more effective than the ready made ones. In winter put your blankets in vacuum bags and your pillows when you’re away . Your nets can be washed regularly and should save the backs of your curtains .

Buy a Meaco dehumidifier- cost much less than others to run - about 4p per hour. They will also produce a small amount of heat. Cheaper to heat a home which is less humid, all your other tips are correct. Would consider kitchen and shower extractor fans but maybe expensive to have installed.

I have 2 meaco dehumidifier, one is compressor based and circa 4p hour and works in house brilliantly. I even pur chased 1 for my son at uni in a house share, works brilliantly. My other meaco is the dl8 model, which has no compressor and therefore can work down to1 degree whereas compressors only down to circa 10 degree C. The dl8 uses a rotating dry disc which damp air is pulled through, and the disc removes the dampness, as the disc slowly rotates, the disc is dried with warm air, the warm air is cooled on an internalradiator and the moisture collected. The output air is dry and slightly warm. I don't consider the warm air a bad thing, but makes this type of dehumidifier slightly more expensive to run compared with the compressor based. However, bear in mind you will generally want to heat when you are typicallyusing a dehumidifier and if a caravan etc. Is likely to get below 10 degrees at night/ when you're out or if left on when you vacate?

Trays of salt placed around the van. Cheaper than buying a dehumidifier.
