**Solved!** Starter relay problem! Works for most bikes/vehicles!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Ive been having starting issues with my 2011 Gsxr 600. After countless nights of researching the problem, I couldn't find the solution! So I ran a few diagnostic tests and found that my relay was bad! I hope this video helps another fellow rider!!
This diagnosis can be tested with any vehicle as they all use the same principle.

Always make sure all of your connections in a circuit are tight before doing any other troubleshooting. Otherwise you will chase problems all around and get nowhere.
This is exactly what I needed for my 750. I'm going to have at it tomorrow to see if bridging the terminals work for me.
Excellent. I just bought a mint 2006 Kawasaki EX250 Ninja for 760.00 at auction because it wouldn’t start…just clicking! Got the relay and new battery on order! I think this man just showed me my problem, no doubt! Many thanks!
I've got a 2007 Kymco Venox 250 that is in great condition. It had sat in the garage for a couple of months too long and I had a problem getting it started. Thanks for the clear video. This was the simplest explanation of the clicking issue. I have a 07' 650 V-Strom with 49,600 miles. It seems like it is my relay/ solenoid. I'll try to jump it like you did and see if it starts. Thanks again.
Awesome video!!! After watching a couple videos on KZread, I eventually came across yours. I had the same issue but my bike is a 2006 GSXF 600 Katana so I often cant find videos on it. The starter relay was making the click and the fuse was fine on it and so I thought it had to be the starter motor because it looked a little cooked. And after buying a new one and installing it, it still wasn't cranking. After watching your video I ran down stairs and in to the garage to give it a try and sure enough she cranked. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us.
Great video, followed the exact same steps to replace the relay on my GSR 750. Worked great.

Dude this video was a gift from God for me because it literally allowed me to diagnose that's wrong with my bike. I've own multiple bikes but was making really good money at the time so always had a shop do the work for me. I'm Gen-X so I grew up in the carbureted motorcycle era but everything I've owned is always been fuel injected so why was always super cautious with doing s*** with the electrical. This is a old-school trick that I had completely forgotten about props for bringing that sucker out cuz it is so simple and allows you to with a screwdriver and multimeter diagnose your starter your fuel relay switch your stator and voltage regulator all with those two simple items. Turned out I had to I got a state or not putting out enough voltage and a fried fuel relay switch which was just recently but that's on the video bro good looks I can chill the rest of my Sunday now

@@MotoCos88 I'm hearing the same click sound on mine.
Pesonally, I take my grounds off first and I put them on last. This dramatically decreases the risk that I can short a hot to ground and blow fuses, start a fire, and/or blow up my battery.
Thanks for this, really useful. I’ve had a similar problem on my Triumph. I shorted out the solenoid this morning and it fired up first time, didn’t even have to pull the clutch in which was weird.
@davefloyd9443

In the circuit power is supplied to the starter via the clutch switch, forcing you to pull the clutch to connect the starter switch to the relay via the battery, shorting across the poles gives power to the relay upstream of any switches, hence your bike started with no clutch.
Experiencing a similar problem with my XR650L currently. Thanks for your input bru

Give it a try! If you can, be sure to check the voltage on the battery. When testing the relay and starter motor, it needs a certain amount of voltage to turn over. Just keep that in mind before spending a bunch of money on things that may not be the problem like I did :P

Thank you so much for this! I had just a click, so I did this and now my starter is working normally again 🤔. Not complaining, I'm just thinking I've now corrected a bad connection by welding the connector bolts on to the starter relay/solinoid... 😳 It took a bit of turning-over as my bike has been off the road for 18 months, so there were a few sparks and my screwdriver is a bit messed up... 😩😂 It's kind of hard to keep a good, clean contact with just a screwdriver...

Excellent. Other things to look at with similar symptoms are the side stand switch, clutch switch, gear position sensor.
Some Moto Guzzi's had a seemingly similar problem that was actually caused, I believe, by the wire feeding power, via the starter relay to the starter solenoid, being too small a gauge to properly feed enough power to said solenoid and giving the impression of a faulty solenoid contact. Problem fixed by running a 25A cable with inline fuse (experiment with fuse size 10, 15 or 20A) from battery to solenoid via the starter relay to replace the original solenoid feed wire.
@viciouscycle8890
2 жыл бұрын
A V-Twin needs a larger diameter wire than an Inline four due to the current demands. A wire with too small a diameter cannot handle the current needed to do the work and acts like a resistor which further exasperates the issue. An easy check is to physically touch/hold the wire after it has had a load placed upon it. if it's warm, probably not a big deal. If it's too hot to hold, your problem starts there. OHM's LAW. Look it up.
Yah saved me from replacing a starter motor and a whole lotta mechanical work just to find out it was the relay. Thank you sir. o7

Great video and explanation helped me save time and money😂
Good call, this is a direct result of bean counters telling the Engineers the tried and true materials are too expensive and to make it cheaper. What is happening inside the solenoid is the contact surfaces either wear through or are so burned that they no longer make contact due to pitting and carbon build up. Being a sealed unit there is no way of being able to clean the mating surfaces for a few hundred more starts. Replacement is the only option.
Took you over a year to figure that out? Ok, now you have it fixed, get out and enjoy that beautiful weather you have there!
