SOLVED! Fix Nintendo Switch USB Pro Controller Connectivity Issues

In this episode, we show you how to fix USB Controller Connectivity issues with the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED related to the Retro Fighter Defender and other USB-connected controllers.

While I personally love wireless controllers, there are times when using a USB device on my Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED is necessary. Some wireless controllers still rely on some sort of USB dongle to connect to the system instead of utilizing Bluetooth technology. In our recent review of the Retro Fighters Defender, a number of people have expressed that they have had issues getting the Defender to work with their Switch. Thankfully, the solution is fast and easy, and just about anyone should be able to solve the issue in about a minute.
The problem is, on the Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite, USB Wired communication is disabled by default out of the box. This is what causes issues, not just with the Retro Fighters Defender, but with ANY USB-connected controller. This is really an inconvenient thing, especially since Nintendo licenses USB-Controllers from other manufacturers themselves!
To enable USB communication you'll need some sort of wireless controller, and yes you can simply use the Joy-Cons to do this. Navigate to the System menu. From here, scroll down to Controllers And Sensors. Enter this menu, and scroll down to Pro Controller Wired Communication. If this is in the off position, congrats, you have found your communication issue. Toggle this from Off to On and you should be good. If not, then there's one last thing to try.
Being basically an Android Tablet, there are a few different power-off options to use. When connected to a TV, you can only put the system to sleep, however in handheld you have more options. Hold down the Power button for 3-5 seconds, and a different menu will pop up. Instead of just entering Sleep Mode, you will also see options to restart or shut the system down. If Wired USB Communications are turned on and the system will still not work with wired controllers, do a hard restart using this menu. Once restarted, the system should work flawlessly.
There you have it, in just a few basic steps you can resolve your wired communication issues with the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite. It is irritating that Nintendo disabled wired communications from the box, but it is an easy fix. This is something that Retro Fighters normally covers in the manuals of their controllers, however, it was missed in the first run of manuals for the Defender. I have spoken to Robert at Retro Fighters and this is being corrected in the next batch of controllers and manuals. I'm glad to see them address this moving forward, and it just shows their dedication to the community.

Weird that this is the only video or thread I've seen talking about this. I ended up having to update the dongle's firmware on my PC from the download on the Defender's product page. After doing that it connected to the Switch like a charm.
I will looking for the same problem and found on you channel. Just bought my wife wired super Mario controller from GameStop followed. Your instructions in the wire controller works now. Thank you very much for helping me out.

What fix/method worked for you? I also just got a retroflag today and it's not working unless I have it plugged with the switch charger. I also got the Pro controller wired communication turned On.

I banged my head against the wall for so long trying to figure out how to do a hard restart on the switch. I hate the fact they have that menu hidden

Have you tried using a different cord? The cord that came with my controller was a dud and that ended up being my only issue. Hope this helps!

Too late .. i already sold my Dobe grip controller "the old model"... for the love of all that is holy.. it just wont connect to my unit.. I recently ran into a USB related issue with my Switch. It might have been a recent heatwave but after some really really hot days, I noticed that I could still charge my controllers with the USB ports on my dock but the data wasn't transmitting through to get my wired and 2.4ghz pads to work. Even my usb LAN adapter stopped working.

Help! I have a Hor Battle pad GC controller. It works fine with my PC, but i doesnt work with any nintentdo switch. I already activated the Pro controller Wired Communication and restarted the console. My guess is that it has to do something with the turbo mode of the controller and the RED light it emits. In no video about this controller the light is on, and no one speaks about the turbo mode or the RED light. The manual doesnt explain either. HELP!

Connect it to your Switch via USB cable and see if that works. Some controllers just don't like pairing wirelessly but will via USB

Has anyone figured out how to get the light on the usb dongle to stop blinking when the console is off/controller off? I haven’t updated my controller since I got it so maybe an update would fix this just kinda annoying I have to unplug it everytime I’m done playing 😂
I got the Retroflag Gamecube Gamepad for my switch, I had the same issue you had, no matter if it was USB Pro Controller on, it still doesn't work. I restarted my switch, turned it off and on. Nothing works.

Same here. Did you get it working? I’ve seen it work for a few seconds, then it stops. (It works on my old Switch though, which is weird)

@@justinraymond few seconds and stops, exactly. Well, I contacted retroflag, they are quick to respond but not helpful. I need to ship it back to get a refund for the product but not of the shipping. They said it might have damaged the usb port on the way here. I counting it as a loss and do NOT recommend anyone to gamble on this product

I went to Nintendo and PowerA pages looking for a solution and were helpless, the restart solved my issue, thanks man. I suppose that could be a volatile memory issue that was cleaned with the restart, only suppositions I don't really know

I found that I had to unpair my Pro Controller from my PC first. Also, make sure the battery is charged.
I got a wired Horipad controller today. It works perfectly in my PC, but my Switch won't register it at all, even after following all these steps.

@@kohtyp9747 Yeah well unfortunately my problem might just be caused by the dock itself, not the Switch. Turns out all three of the USB ports do not work anymore (even though I used to have a LAN adapter plugged into the port in the back, I guess that explains why that stopped working a few weeks ago...)

The goal from the beginning was as a replacement PS1/2 controller, with additional features as a bonus. Some have said there's another Sixaxis-enabled version in development, but I have not heard htat myself.

You shouldn't have to power cycle every time you hook up your controller. Once you set it to turn on wired Pro Controller access you should be good to go. What controller are you using?

@@RoXolid Power-A wired controller (one with a Mario design) I don't have to power cycle every time but eventually it will not work and I'll have to restart it again for some reason. I thought I may have something to do with new system updates.

@@slump6982 no, I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of Power A controllers but that shouldn't make a difference. So you're literally just power cycling, you're not changing the setting down here, correct?
