SOLVED 3-Day-Old Missing Person Case.. (Antonio Amaro-Lopez)

Ойын-сауық

We found 57-year-old Antonio Amaro-Lopez in his car underwater, solving a 3-day-old missing person case in Portland, Oregon after you, the viewers reached out and put us in touch with Antonio's family to help bring him home after he lost control of his car on February 14th, careening off the I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge into the Columbia River.
Antonio had been missing for 3-days before we arrived on Feb 17th to offer our services to the family and the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office River Patrol.

Doug and I met up at 8am, and up to the I-205 bridge shortly before 9am where we also met up with Scott.
After identifying an area of interest to search for Antonio and his missing car, the MCSO asked that we stay out of the area.
Waiting for them to pull back to search our area of interest, we slid into the area around 12:30pm and quickly identified a vehicle underwater, marking it with a grappling hook.
Notifying the Sheriff of the location of the vehicle, we were asked to remove the marker and move out of the area.
The MCSO Dive Team arrived on the scene a few hours later, and after unsuccessful attempts to locate the vehicle, asked if we could help with locating the vehicle a second time.
Within a few minutes, the vehicle was located and we placed the grappling hook back on the vehicle.
The MCSO Dive Team was then able to dive on the car underwater and confirm that there was a body inside.
Shortly after dark, Antonio Lopez was recovered and brought onboard the MCSO Dive Boat.
We are honored and humbled to have been there for the Lopez family, side by side on the water and witnessing their candlelight vigil onshore at the boat ramp upon our return at the end of the evening.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lopez family.

If you guys ever show up in my neck of the woods, you'll have full cooperation of our dive team, and I will PERSONALLY put you guys in charge of the operation. After they removed their marker these people still couldn't find the vehicle, that's is negligence at its worst. If AWP weren't there on that day there's no way the police diving team would have found that vehicle in a million years. Others would just arrest them on the spot and say ' they interfere with the recovery of a body'." You got at least part of this right. They COULD have arrested them, but they didn't. That's called discretionary power. And it would have been for "obstructing legal process"; that means interfering with a police investigation, which is a felony. But, as I said, they didn't take that rout, because it would have been over kill. As to us all being aware that the police in America are "toxic", I am aware of no such thing. And since you have made this statement, you will need to prove it by a presentation of solid, well researched evidence that will back your statement. I can assure you before you start, you won't find any. I, on the other hand, can present a refutation of your statement right here; from the MacIver Institute, April, 2021 and I quote: "The Washington Post has created a database of every known deadly police shooting in America since 2015. As of this writing, 6,211 people have been shot and killed by law enforcement officers. 46% of them-2,883 to be exact-were white, while 24% (1,496 total) were black. Just 6% were unarmed." In the mean time, almost 100 people were shot in Chicago on the 4th of July...none of them by police officers. 100 people in ONE NIGHT. Who's toxic?

@@desiree8333 I don't think it's all an equipment issue, I think a good amount of it is an experience/training issue. Sure, there's red tape/budgeting issues that prevents LE obtaining the most up-to-date in equipment and Jared & Co have been lucky to have some great sponsors donate the very best, but even back when Jared was still working with the older stuff he was able to read the output better than these cops. I think part of what makes him, and now his team (that he's mostly trained by being hands on), more adept at recognising cars amogst everything else in the water is that he does so much of it (not just in helping solve cases, but in the river cleanups where he started), but also as a diver he has an understanding of what is happening on the bottom of the river/lake/reservoir, which helps him with that interpretation (telling apart a car from things like agiant log, old pier/bridge bracings, and other debris etc). I also think his smaller boat & set up is often an advantage too. On top of that, he's also developed a pretty good understanding of the area above water...to read entry points, car's physics, and the like...so looking at the marks on the bridge and using that and other things he knows about how cars travel in the air & water (as seen in other recoveries), he was quickly able to estimate how far & if/where the vehicle may have travelled. Every case they do they add their gained knowledge to the next. Unfortunately, even though it's their job, the police looking for the car likely just haven't done it enough (it's usually the situation with every case AWP works) and likely too far between each one they have, so there's little chance to learn from hands on. All the cars Jared and friends retrieved just for clean up helped them learn. However, that sort of thing is beneath LE, not enough money/time/inclination, even though they could really benefit from it. So you have a multi-faceted issue 1) buying of newest equipment not being sanctioned because of money, 2) lack of experience, training, and ability to read the sonar outputs, and 3) the thing that we saw here that caused the longest delay...ego. Imagine how quick this would have been if the police hadn't ordered them out in the beginning. Once the cops went on lunch Jared went almost straight to the right point and they had it marked by the time the cops came back... but ego and hubris from the cops meant they still wouldn't accept that help. And I wonder if they would have taken even longer to finally ask for help if the family hadn't been there. I imagine those first divers in would have been annoyed too because they were diving without a real target, and even though it being winter the river probably had as good a visibility as it can get, they still wouldn't see it if they were just a foot too far from it. I guess at least they apologised at the end, but even so, he shouldn't have needed to. All they had to do was ask who are you, do you know what you're doing? And then follow up with "Great, let's co-oridnate our efforts." Sadly, Jared & Co have come across far too many LE with this attitude issue and then they screw stuff up. There should be mandatory ongoing training for LEOs working sonar in their search teams, and from outside experts...not from other cops who have obviously been doing the job poorly for years. Hell, most of them would likely improve massively just from watching all AWPs vids, from the junk car retrievals in the clean ups to the cold case searches. Maybe Jared needs to look at setting up training for LE, might improve their attitude as well as their skills.

It is so sad. He lost his life for trying to do the right thing... And who knows how long it took for the vehicle to become flooded- how hard did he fight to get out? The difference in the interaction between the families and the police departments and the families and the AWP team is CLEARLY as opposite as night and day. I see these mothers hug you and thank you. Clearly at ease while standing with you and talking to you. I then see them with the officers and a complete 180 happens. They are tense, often times hopeless or angry...and even sadder still...saying they have been begging them for so long to do what you did in one day. Ive head tbese familys say they dont believe or trust in the officers. . Then cut to the episide of the mother hugging you and as your walking towards the water saying "I trust you completely " with a smile on her face. One question for you. Where were the plows supposed to put the snow? I have always said when people complain about how the road was plowed, that the plow drivers could have just stayed home and then say think about how bad it could have been if they did. This was a freak accident and probably won't happen again on that bridge for another 50 years or more. When the good Lord calls you home it does not matter where you are or what you are doing.

My brother is on the sheriff’s dive team and he said the dive was particularly difficult due to it was 38° and there was a strong current. He was the diver that went down after you marked it. He noted that you guys have better sonar than they do. He said the first ones down found a cylinder and then... the rest followed. I did mention the new sonar and that he should (hopefully) pass that info on, so that they know who to call in the future and coordinate with, if needed. You guys are still amazing as ever. Thank you!!! Edit: One thing for others to consider, that he later pointed out, was that it was still considered an active crime scene and they have policies and procedures that have to be followed. I’m an Army Veteran and was like.. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I should have automatically considered that, considering military life is nothing but rules, regulations, and S.O.P.’s. 🤓 Also, as an Army Veteran, most of those I served with were decent people... it’s those ‘other’ few that were bottom feeders and they were the ones that gathered more attention. Just to be clear... I have no tolerance, nor the patience for any kind of ‘bottom feeders’ in our society... especially those in positions of power. Lastly, AWP typically recovers those drowning victims who are suspected to be within vehicles; whereas, once activated, the police dept. divers are searching, within a short period of time, after a person has been reported missing or lost. Q for @adventureswithpurpose ... was this the first time you’ve been called in on a search, so soon after the accident?

@ibemmy225 sounds like they do not have livescope. I've wondered how these guys are doing better then the counties are at searching areas. And it's livescope, all drive teams should own the proper sonar.

The fact that they made you remove your maker was downright irresponsible. I understand the PD not wanting civilians involved sometimes for several different reasons but they don't have to be rude about it and let pride get in the way.

What total and utter crap. Regardless of someone apologising after the event, I bet EVERY INCIDENT that goes like thst will forever be mentally noted. I can see that eventually they will call you asap so yiu can work together. Your small group would have to be the best regardless of what the authorities say. Authorities get paid by the government regardless. You dont, so it means more to people with folk like you around. Action speaks louder than Words! Again - an absolutely fantastic group of people.

It’s sad that a lot of the sherif departments aren’t keen on AWPs help, they know who you are and what you do, when that officer/Sheriff came back saying he knew the car was there I honestly don’t believe that, his pride got in the way there and that’s just sad as all he did was waste more time in getting Mr Lopez out of the water making the family wait longer Jared, Doug and Scott, thank you for rushing to be at the families side and aid in the Recovery, I am honoured to be a member of this community you are all building, God bless you all, God certainly knew what he was doing bringing all you guys together from all areas of the U.S ❤️

It really saddens me how it seems to be a pattern with all these different police departments in all different states not wanting to search for these families lost loved ones, and usually almost instantly you guys always seem to recover the vehicle in question along with the person who passed!! it just goes to show that they don't care. NOW if it were a family member of these police officers you can bet your ass they would have every last dive team around the world looking for their loved one. So whoever is reading this please don't hesitate help donate to their channel so we can continue to fund these wonderful men so they can continue to find lost loved ones that need to be recovered! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

It's not always just local pds not wanting help. These are crime scenes until proven otherwise, and there are protocols that exist for good reason. How would you feel if a family member was murdered, or a car company was liable in a situation like this, but it couldn't be proven in court because civilians interfered and tampered with evidence?
