The 2019/2020 RAV-4 hybrid gas tank issue is wide spread for all hybrid owners. I wanted to put this video out so that people could make an informed decision on whether this is a deal breaker for you or not when considering buying the new RAV-4 Hybrids.
Most Toyota Sales Reps do not know about the issue but the Toyota Technicians and Toyota themselves do know this is a wide spread issue. Its been about 6-8 months since Toyota has been aware of the issue and has no solution for the Gas tank yet. This very well could be a safety issue if it involves the pressurization of the gas tank or the vapor line not properly working. Toyota will not tell us anything but "they are actively working on trying to solve the issue." I hope its not a safety issue and just impacts the range. If that is the case then I'm still very happy with my purchase.

Turn the auxiliary off and then depress the fuel release and leave aux off while fueling.

We have the 2020 Rav4 hybrid for about a month now. We definitely have the same fuel tank issue. Did my own troubleshooting and determined the tank is infact holding 14.5 gallons, fuel indicator is the issue. I put 2 gallon tank in trunk and drove 100 miles past zero miles remaining in tank "refuel" message on dash. Then I filled tank to 14 gallons. The math then added up with the odometer miles from fill-up using our average mpg & 14.5 tank capacity. I'm averaging 37.5 MPG mixed city/hwy. Other than fuel indicator issue we love the new hybrid rav4.

You are lucky you can get your gas tank full. Without running the pump very slow I can only get to 3/4 of a tank. Thanks for the video. (my issue has also been reported).

I've been wondering if my rav 4 is also affected.... I have a 2018 xle with a 14.8 gallon tank and I should at 32 mpg be seeing 410-415 miles if you factor in the 2 Gallon reserve but I'm only seeing 390 miles and 10 gallons when filling from empty

When you divide out how many miles you went by gas you put in what is the true MPG?

My friend has this car. She said she literally drove for 2 days (about 80 miles) after the tank empty light came on. She then filled up b/c she had along trip and didn't want to stall on the highway. But maybe there is a greater gas reserve available. I dont recommend doing what she did but then again that could be the issue the tank empty light goes off too early.

When I use to work at Toyota the Prius had the same issue and it was due to the fuel tank bladder. In the cold the fuel tank get smaller and you cant fill it up as much but in warmer weather it works as it should. I dont know of it's the same issue but can very well be.

Same thing.. First tank was used completely, drove almost 600miles after leaving the dealership, after that - only 10 gallon fill-ups, the gauge shows full tank but I can barely get 370miles. Pumping slower yields maybe 0.5 gallon more.

It might be the angle of the inlet pipe to the gas tank. Had this problem for years on my 2002 trailblazer. Had to twist turn the gas nozzle facing up after inserting then it would filll the tank. Also different gas stations have different angle nozzles from what I noticed through the years

Same issue on my 2019 rav4 xle hybrid.. and everytime i fill up my tank the stick doesn’t doesnt reach to Full.. unless i do it manually and press the pump which i only did once because im afraid it might damage it if i do so.. no full disclosure on Toyota’s part about this problem i just found out it myself.. a trip to the gas station gives me about 375miles per fill up..

Do you know if the tank isn't getting full and all you are getting 10 gallons plus couple gallons of reserve for range. or if it's actually filling up 14 gallons but the reserve has 4 gallons in it and the gauge is off?

I have exactly the same issue. The pump shuts off when it is about 4/5 full, all the time. I went to the dearlear, after two ours, I was told "yeah, we know this issue, we are still working on it, no fix yet". It is bushit, at least figuring out what the issue was is not that hard, could't leave the fix and recall afterwards?

Based on what Toyota has posted that after replacing the tank the problem could return would indicate the Evap emissions system is probably pulling too much vacuum on the tank collapsing the tank some what, causing it to loose some volume.

We noticed the same so we have been topping off and with some effort can add another 1 to 2 gallons. We continue to get better at topping off but still seemed we did not hit FULL. Good to know others are having the same issue and that Toyota may? be working on it Thanks for putting this out there. I would also note that we now have over 4000 miles on our 2019 RAV Hybrid and our mpg continues to decrease with each tank. Now only about 35mpg in town. We try to be careful driving in ECO mode. Wonder if anyone else has this issue.

I purchased a 2020 and when i bought it at the dealership it said 580 on the trip tell empty. Then i went to fill up and i could get the gas nozzle to lock onto my tank i had to hold it away ( about 1 inch ) away from the tank then after the fill up it said 560. Went to a Arco and the nozzle locked on it filled up and cost $10 less!!! (Problem alert) the trip range said 509!

Notice we didn’t see him top off the tank? I think there’s probably plenty of more room for gas in the tank but the gas pump shuts off prematurely. I have a similar problem with my 2018 Camry. It always shuts down the gas hose before the tank is full. When I continue to pump the gas at very low flow of gas, I can usually get another 2 gallons of gas in the tank. This might not be the entire solution for the Rav4, but I’m sure it’s major factor that should be considered.
