    Dear Sir: This is my second 4020, back when I was actively farming I owned a 1972 (power shift) identical in almost every respect to this one, except this tractor is just fractionally older. (Wished I had kept my first 4020, seriously regret it today, but traded it for a 4240 and didn't have the financial means to keep both) There is exactly a 500 number difference between serial numbers between my first tractor and this one. When I toured the Waterloo factory in March 2003 (along with a full busload of other farmers from this district) we were asked if I had any questions. My question was --could anybody tell me where in the timeline of 4020's built was mine---a very cordial official from the factory informed me at the end of the tour that my first 4020 (serial number 268165) was built in the last 1% of production. BTW--I greatly enjoyed my tour of that factory, still talk about it to various friends and associates, along with the tour of the East Moline factory as well as the administration center and museum. You started at the factory one month before introduction of Generation 2, that must have been quite the thrill!

    @@DeereDon Yes, Deere was making the 30 series with Soundgard bodies when I started working there. They were all shipped out covered in cardboard to disguise them from the public. My very first job was on the assembly line adjusting the throttle linkage and charging the air conditioning system. When you took your tour in 2003, I was working at the John Deere Waterloo Engine Works that opened 1975. I retired in 2006. Ironically, the family farm that I grew up on was strictly IHC. My dad HATED John Deeres! LOL My mother's family farm was all Deere. The final 4020 serial number is 270288. Deere still has it in their archives.

    @@gonerydin4225 Dear Sir: I do remember the evening of August 18th, 1972, a flat bed truck came through our small town here in Saskatchewan. On the back was some type of JD tractor as the front/rear wheel rims were exposed, they were shiny bright yellow, but I thought it very odd that it was all covered in cardboard, the front windows of the cab (SG Body) seemed "odd", it looked round, not square. I noticed the truck had stopped for fuel at our local small-town garage, so I decided to venture down the road, nobody was around, I climbed up on the back of the truck, climbed the "square" platform steps of the cab, started ever so slowly trying to gently "peel" back the cardboard, all of a sudden I heard a very loud demanding voice say---uh huh, get down from there, Now! Which I did. I did ask the driver what was beneath the cardboard, he said it was a "4030". (I figured it was a replacement to the "4020"). That was all he divulged. Within a few more minutes he was gone, I waited until the next day, went down the road to another dealer and got to sit inside a "4430". I have the original JD brochures that came out a couple of months later depicting Gen 2. Plus the small brochure that was given to all the new customers that August 19th day. I also had the LONG BEAKED cap that was given out, but I accidentally lost it by hanging it where it should never have been hung. I toured the Engine Factory in 2003 as well , got to see an engine being built from the crankshaft to final head assembly. I was able to take photos in all the other factories we visited, but were told we could not take any in this one. All in all very impressive!

    Did you reroute the air cleaner to go thru the hood? I had a '71 4020 and the stack was the only thing going up thru the hood! Beautiful piece of machinery, thanks for sharing the video! Regards, Ron

  • @DeereDon

    @DeereDon

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hello Ron: Thanks for your interesting comments. As for the air cleaner stack, actually John Deere made available two methods of air intake for their 4020's, one was with the air cleaner taking in air from under the hood as found on most of their tractors, but here in Western Canada they would provide as an option an "external" air cleaner stack which took in air from higher up above the tractor. Very few 4020's sold in this part of the country had the "internal" version, most came with the dust bowl assembly with the usual metal screen mounted beneath the bowl. If you watch the video of my 3020 blowing snow a few years earlier you can see the same apparatus, only smaller because of the lesser requirement of air.

  • @thetractorguyoldtractor3524

    @thetractorguyoldtractor3524

    3 жыл бұрын

    Another evolution regards to the engine's air intake... we still have dad's 1964(first year of the 4020's.) air stack with the clear plastic dust cup at the top and an oil bath air cleaner further down. My 1968 appears the same with the tall air intake above the hood. The difference on the 1968 model is having a primary and secondary paper element cartridge air filtration under the hood.

The video mentions a mower & "other machines", but didn't specify what. Is the 260 designed for that setup or did you have to make a mount for it?

  • @DeereDon

    @DeereDon

    3 жыл бұрын

    The front PTO was designed for front mount mower where the rear PTO would have a trailing hay conditioner, in snow country it could be used for snowblowing. If you take a moment and read my intro you will note what took place to convert the 260. At the same time, check out the video I just finished producing which shows the 260 from Day 1. My snowblower is only 7 feet wide and most snowblowers sold today for the average consumer really don't go much more then 8 feet wide, industrial models probably bigger. Having said that, I believe it would be almost impossible to find a John Deere snowblower today in decent condition around that 8 foot size. Since I have always farmed with JD I would prefer to keep it that way and not end up hanging some "non green/yellow machine" on the front of my old 4020, so I guess the only choice I have is just to go slow with this unit, take my time, and enjoy sitting in the cab and watch the white stuff fly. How do you not break the shear bolt when your pushing the deep snow????

  • @DeereDon

    @DeereDon

    5 жыл бұрын

    Dear Sir: The shear bolt is designed to snap when encountering a sudden, instant "obstacle." As long as I keep the engine power reduced and move slowly along (even though the snow is actually piling up over the top of the blower) I do not have to be too concerned about breaking it. The blower gearbox and its accompanying shear bolt are built for approximately 65 P.T.O. horsepower, that is the reason why I have decreased the engine rpm as much as possible to meet the required sprocket speed to give the blower its required 540 r.p.m. Thanks for watching my video.

    There are quite a number of collectors of various old antique tractors across western Canada. Perhaps it was 20 years ago , took dad to see the Campbell family collection of John Deere model D's just on the east side of Brandon. They have a D from each and every year. Recall that being 1924 through 1953? There D from the last production year is factory assembled. Several serial numbers later were the"streeters... and the story of the streeters is a story for another day!

  • @DeereDon

    @DeereDon

    4 жыл бұрын

    Dear Sir: The shear pin is basically to prevent damage in the case of encountering a sudden heavy load (eg. a rock, a street curb, etc.), so as long as the load on the driveshaft is constant and the power transmitted through said driveshaft is steady there should be no need to break this bolt. It also helps that I have reduced the engine rpm so as not to transmit full engine horsepower into the blower and at the same time I will only use this unit when the snow is dry and powdery, would never use it under wet, "sticky" conditions if at all possible.

I do know that many years ago when I had my snowblower mounted on a different tractor with a completely different hitch system I was breaking shear pins due to the extreme angle of the power-shaft. Having said that, it also says at the back of this manual that the maximum horsepower to be used on this blower should be a maximum of 65 P.T.O. h.p. Is yours a 260, a 270, or the later model 275? Dear Sir: Please accept my apology for not responding sooner to your question. The cab is not heated, in fact I prefer not to heat it simply because any snow landing on the windows would instantly melt and then run down and eventually freeze if placed back in cold storage, which is where the tractor stays when not in use. If I owned a heated shed that would be different, then at least everything would be all dried off for the next time.

    We most certainly could move, to places where other folk experience earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanoes, tsunamis, forest fires, flash floods, tornadoes, droughts, disease, poisonous snakes and reptiles, etc., all of which are life threatening, but like my title to this video clearly illustrates, I do have a simple solution to my problem, and within less then a month of this video being shot all the white stuff had disappeared with no visible, lasting effect on either the land or the population. Why would I jump from the frying pan into the fire??

    @@wlehtola Elitist my ass. I retired 4 years ago after 40 years in the Oilfield. I bought a section and a half of land and have been building a ranch since. I've worked for everything I have, never asked for anything. If someone wants to bitch about they're life, change it.

    @@David-ll8bt I too retired 8 years ago after farming for 40 years, I too took over a very small farm and built it up, I too worked for everything I have and never asked for anything from anybody, and at no time in my video am I complaining (bitching) about my situation, in fact I have the simple solution to solve any "snow" problems that may come my way. And neither is anybody else doing any "bitching" either , rather it is you that unfortunately is spewing out uncalled for and unsolicited advice!
