Solo Winter Camping at my Bushcraft Shelter - Dutch Oven Mule Deer Roast - Camp Deadhorse

Ойын-сауық

In this new video, my dog Naomi and I head back out to my recently finished bushcraft camp, Camp Deadhorse. After a short walk in and finding that the camp and gear I had packed in was in good shape, I got to work building a fire (which Naomi graciously helped with) and melting snow so the dog and I would have a source of water. Once the fire had burned down, I cleared an area beside the fire-pit, moved some coals over, and set my dutch oven on them to start heating up. I seasoned a shank I had butchered off my mule deer from last fall with a homemade spice blend, and threw it in the pot to slow cook. While the shank cooked, I cleared off a fallen pine tree and used my axe and bucksaw to cut in a nice flat surface to use as a cutting board for the onion, potato, carrot, and garlic I had brought out. Once the meat was done, I cut up the veggies and threw them into the pot to with some water so they could steam, and the end result was a delicious venison and vegetable pot roast - not bad for my first time cooking in a dutch oven. The dog and I spent the rest of the night relaxing, cutting wood, drying gear, and getting dripped on from our leaky roof. The next morning I set the dutch oven on the fire to reheat last night's dinner, and melted more snow for some medium roast cowboy coffee. After eating breakfast, I got to work prepairing camp for the next time I was out. I dropped a few small trees with my bucksaw, and after dragging them to camp and bucking them up, I split the biggest rounds out of the pile. I stacked the wood in the shelter's built-in woodrack that runs below the log bed, and then spent the rest of the day cleaning up. Over all the camp was great (aside from a leaky roof due to a bear putting holes in the tarp), and I'm looking forward to my next trip out there.
Thanks for watching,
- Nicholas

Enjoy the new video! If you listen close (with headphones), you can hear a wolf howl in the distance around 1:00. It was the first one I caught audio of in all my years of filming - pretty cool! Don't forget to drop a like and share with your friends if you enjoyed, and leave some feedback on what you want to see in the next one. Thanks for watching! - Nicholas

Nice cozy camp Nicholas 😊 I still say another retaining wall connecting the existing one to the side of the shelter, where your feet were laying, would bring a lot more warmth into your shelter 🔥 But that roast looked amazing 🍖 and Naomi is a beautiful girl 🐶 Thanks for the wonderful adventure. Can't wait for the next one 😁

When you sawed the big log to make a flat surface I think it will be easier to baton the axe in side on after you make the saw cuts . They should just pop right of then . Maybe lol 😆

Hi Nicholas -good to see you back and you have a new 4 legged friend she is gorgeous, and very stately - I do like her stance what type of breed is she? Your shelter is certainly looking very stable and solid nice area to be in to - snow does make everything look serene and pure. Your Crock Pot is almost unheard of in the modern world today. My mother n Grandmother always had one and they used them everyday for cooking on their Wood & Coal ranges, so self reliant these women were and created such awesome memories for us kids as we grew up. Enjoy your videos and good to see you back and travel well.Cheers

Come on Nicholas do you have to make me drool 😋 lol. Do you know what breed/s Naomi is ?? Such a good looking girl. Great posture shows some good blood somewhere !! How's the waxed pants holding up ?? Have had to rewax any ? ( Aside from human error ) Well that shelter is really paying dividends !!!! Good on you amigo 👍🏽. Any good hunting yet ?? You know Bushcraft really makes you appreciate the lives of our forefathers !!! Nothing came the easy way !!

Naomi is a mix of kangal, pyrenees, and border collie, but she definitely has more kangal personality and build aside from the collie colours. Definitely a weird mix of breeds, but I don't think I'm ever going to get anything else. Perfect mix of guard dog and working dog in my opinion. Not too smart to be a shit disturber like most collies and the guard dog in her makes her prioirtize protecting me instead of chasing squirrels or not paying attention to what's going on. Was kind of funny - every time I would get up and leave the distance Naomi thought was safe for me to be within, she'd be right on my heels following me. Curious to see what she does when we run into a bear though, sure hope she doesn't chase it just to lead it right back to me when she gets scared 🤣 I haven't had to re-wax these pants since I originally double-tinned them (inside and outside, stiff as a board but they work best). I did do some hunting last fall, got my first mule deer buck finally which was the shank in this video, and missed out on two black bears. Thanks for watching!

But if she brings you a bear into camp I sure do hope you get THAT ON FILM !!!! WHAT A VIDEO THAT WOULD MAKE HUH????? LOL 😆. ATB, catch ya on the next 1 !!!

I enjoyed your overnighter. That was some good-looking stew, meat looked a little tough. Now about that shelter. Was it leaking? Just a thought how about a set of doors opening out full length. Where is the rifle? Your little buddy is getting big. Be safe.

Glad you enjoyed it! Meat was a little tough but that's what you get with a shank 😆 The shelter was leaking a bit. A bear had put a few holes in the tarp when I had left it out one day, and those hole happened to be right where the water was pooling from the snowmelt. Wasnt too big of a problem though. Didn;t bother bringing the rifle this trip since there are no bears out
