Solo Wild Camping and Four Scottish Mountains - Tyndrum

#munrobagging #hillwalking #wildcampinguk
Beinn Dubhcraig, Ben Oss, Ben Lui and Beinn a' Chleibh are the four Munros which sit to the western side of the Stirlingshire village of Tyndrum.
After 75 days of not being near the hills, this is my journey around the four Munros with a wild camp on a bealach (pass) between two peaks to test my new Sierra Designs High Route 3000 tent.

Epic Brian!! Well done. I think I am going to need to do an adventure where am taking bearings and navigating on my own, I have not done it for ages and could do with the practice. I got lazy when I got my GPS and its essential. Looks a nice wee tent, it does look like its got plenty of head room. Can you get into the gear store from the outside too? its fantastic waking up to an inversion. Thats Ben Lui cut from my list after seeing that bog. cheers for sharing, good luck on the WHW

Cheers Gus, it was a good wee practice of the nav and something I still enjoy. I'd say if you're getting back into it then plan on your next trip a stage or two that you will navigate bearings or pace. I often do simple things like pace a known distance (say, 200m of flat then other times 200m of steep incline) and count my steps (usually 65 on flat over 100m) and time it too (varies on terrain). If you do that in fair and easy weather then it can be combined with map reading in poor conditions, especially when there's no path 😂 That's how I try to keep my eye in with it. I still enjoy finding my location with DDCRAPS or bearings, again just to know I can, but this doesn't work in 50m visibility. As you say, GPS is here to stay and it's a great tool. I'd say give Ben Lui a try but know that bog will be there regardless and you'll be through it on the way up and down 😂 As always mate, thanks for watching and I'm glad you liked it.

Cheers Sauntering, the wee two minute parting on the first was a lucky glimpse but if I hadn't got the views on Ben Oss then, you're right, it would have been a wash out. That itself only stayed for about five minutes but it all came together, right place, right time and with a fellow walker appearing and happy to grab a snap. Thanks for commenting and here's hoping I get more views on the next one.

Good video and a pretty big day before your camp. I have a diary from 1986 in which I drew a tent with one pole by my shoulder and a second pole on the other side by my knee. Two vestibules. And I did absolutely nothing with my idea. Good luck to the companies which are using my idea. I say my idea but a Victorian probably came up with it long before me.

Hey Daftest Name, it was a decent day before the camp and a big one after such a break. I'd love to see your design and you're probably right, it's probably been around for decades until somebody capitalises on the idea. It does seem to be a stable design and I'm looking forward to getting it out more. I don't know if that'll be any consolation to yourself but secretly you'll know you designed it really.

😂 I thought I was getting that top revealing inversion but it wasn't to happen, like you say, it could have gone either way. The tent is brilliant and will have the insight uploaded this week to get a better look but it'll be with me when we finally manage that catch-up. I did think of the ol' thumbing but decided to use it as a big bit of training in the end plus I squeezed in a chippie lunch 😂

Hey Alistair, it is a brilliant feature for the Scottish weather and the WHW will be a great test for it overall I think. The bog is certainly still there. I had a small group walking upwards and their rationale was that it hadn't rained for two days so they thought it may have been dried out. I don't think two hundred days would dry that out 😂 Have any of you guys done the WHW?

Thanks Esper, I'm glad you've liked this one. It is a crazy amount of bog and I can second that it is knee deep in some parts. It was wild at some bits. Some people I saw had been on it for all of 50 metres and were discussing the near loss of shoes 😂 It's something else and I'm so glad that was the last bit of my journey (apart from the trek back to Dalrigh). Again, I'm glad you enjoyed this one and thanks for watching.

Great stuff, I bailed on the four recently after doing Ben Lui. Had walked up Connonish way and had admittedly left it a bit late in the day. Set up camp for the night near where you were after leaving it too late to camp on Chleibh, but the weather was atrocious the following day. Didn’t fancy the remaining ridge in driving rain and zero visibility when the option to return another day was there 😂 ..all the best for the WHW training 👍🏻

Aww mate, I know the feeling. It's a pain when you have to bail but it's usually for the best. Did you do Ben Lui, camp on the bealach and then head off the following day, is that right? My plan was to camp on Beinn a' Chleibh but as you saw it had been a long day and the weather seemed calmer below the cloud. Not long now until I'm on the WHW and can't wait. Have you done it and if so how did you find it?

I had to laugh at the end when you came back and mentioned the dreaded Ben lui bog 😂I nearly lost my boots there a few years ago! A great wee video Brian with some very changeable weather. Polar opposites on Ben Oss to Ben Lui. A testament to your tenacity keeping going and braving the rain and clag. That’s a long old walk back but I would have done the same given the weather. Enjoyed that mate and well done on bagging those 4! Cheers mate. Paul

I'll tell you who wasn't laughing in there... me! I wanted to javelin my walking poles at one point when the ground suddenly went "schloop" up to my knees 😂 Followed by that Bambi run where you try to run on quick-bog. A schloopy, angry man was created for about five metres there 😂 The opening at Beinn Dubhchraig was so quick to appear and so quick to disappear then the inversion at Ben Oss was maybe two to three minutes long before it was a misty, warm haze so none of it really lasted that long. I was just fortunate to be at the right place at the right time for both I'd say. Like your five F-15s (that was awesome). I like a wee mental challenge and the wind, clag and low visibility certainly have me that for the day. It was a trek back, I'll say that. I've never been the fastest of guys in the big scheme of things but I do enjoy a hike and having seen the terrain at Ben Lui the night before, I wasn't tackling that in 30m visibility. It made the fish and chips at Tyndrum seem like they were the award winning produce they were deemed to be 🤤 Thanks for watching all the way mate and I'm glad you liked it. Any other bog trotting I need to watch out for on my travels?
