Great video. I traveled to Asia, South America, Australia, South Africa etc backpacking with the Lonely planet guide books. Before the internet. Fantastic memories. Now it's so easy. Get to a country, do a bit of research on your phone, and you off you go. Even made traveling in Japan easy. Brilliant.

02:22: for the food. And don't forget to add another 100 for the drink ;-) I also travelled a lot with small groups of friends like one, two or three friends and this worked also, but you need to make sure beforehand, how things are being decided. We often had our basic plan and had booked most of the hotels in advance. So plan changes were limited and were basically reduced to "this evening I want to go to this bar or that disco, who wants to join me?" or needed to be discussed and agreed on (which often works, if your friends don't have too different interests). However, being a solo traveler myself since many years I'd like to add one important advantage: being alone gives you all the freedom you might want and need. You can change your plans as you wish and just go with the flow. You can decide spontaneously where to go next, how long to stay and so on. Everything is totally up to you. A disadvantage might be the emergency case (illness, accident, to be robbed) in which being alone is more exhausting or even dangerous. Basically it is all about good excpectation management ;-)

I agree with six of these - really good tips. The Tinder one - I hadn't heard of that but it sounds very good. Thanks - I'll try it next time! 🙂 One thing that I always like doing is rather than moving from place to place all the time, just stay in the same place for a while. You get to know it well and become familiar to locals very quickly which is great for both you and them. It also means you can make good connections easily with new arriving travellers. It opens up conversations, you can help them out with local tips etc.

I'll be leaving for Thailand next week for my first proper SOLO travel, and I am so excited!! Staying in Thailand for around two months. Only got one week booked in Bangkok after my one night quarantine, and after that I have no plans,.. Kinda just want to see where life takes me, I guess. How's the airbnb, hostel and hotel situation in Thailand now with tourism picking back up? Do you think accommodation will be hard to find on a day to day basis?

Thailand is a place you can be spontaneous so you’ll have a great time. I’m a solo traveler from way back when I did business travel by myself to Thailand and other places around the world. I’ll be about one month behind you and staying for 6 weeks. I suggest you at least sketch out an overall plan especially if you want to venture to several spots around the country (like I do). I usually go ahead and reserve a hotel or Airbnb for those places but with free cancellation a few days from their arrival date. I have found Airbnb (and hotels) in Thailand to have very liberal cancellation policies (1-2 days before). Then once on the ground make changes you want. There are so many great KZread travel vloggers that I watch to find unique places to go. Many suggest you use Agoda for same day reservations but also go to the reception and see if it is better or worse (some may match the better rate). Plenty of rooms available except maybe on domestic holidays near the action. Have a great trip.

In Thailand, you don’t even need reservations. Just walk up to a hotel, like in Chiang Mai, pay the $20 a night. This is great because you might like certain neighborhoods better and yo7 can’t tell when yo7 are on the internet. You should go to Phuket and the southern islands, and then go up north to Chiang Mai.

Hi, good luck on your trip,.. you’ll have a blast, I’ve been to Thailand twice , once in 2013 ( 3 months ) and again in 2017 ( 2 months ) , I’d stay away from the Airbnb’s if your on a tight budget ( they tend to charge more ) … but the best advice I can give you ….. if you plan on renting a scooter to get around ,..GET YOUR “ IDP”,.. that’s your international drivers permit, it’s very inexpensive to get from your home country before you leave ,.. the reason to get it is you will be pulled over a couple times a week from police officers in brown uniforms who step off the curb and motion you over for no reason, your drivers license won’t work, without the IDP you will be fined every time , they will let you go but you will have to pay the fine on the spot, or they will take your license and you will have to go to the police station to pay the fine and retrieve your license ( it’s not much , maybe $15-$20 usd ) but it sure ads up, you can get your IDP from AAA in the United States for $20 , I got one on my second trip and was pulled over a bunch of times and let go every time , just smile, be polite , hand them your license and your IDP and your good to go

@@mmaranta785 Agree the internet rate can be considerable higher than the rate offered at the hotel, plus you have so many hotels to choose from that you're likely to find a good rate anywhere.

Went to Thailand with a few friends a month ago. Even though I enjoyed a lot, we were still heavily limited by each other’s interestes and sleep schedule. Now I am planning for a solo trip to Thailand after 2-3 months and I really want to go but something is holding me back - what if I start getting bored alone? What if I just stay inside to avoid having to eat alone in restaurants? I can’t shake these thoughts out of my head :/

Soi 18 is normally my home away from home when I'm in Bangkok. I've stayed at the Rembrandt, Park Plaza and Maitria many times. Rembrandt is a little more dated than the other 2, but still a great hotel. Soi 18 is fantastic with several restaurants and convenience stores and just a short walk to Asoke MRT and BTS.
